Calling All Playlists!

4th February 2012, By: dimity, Tags:

A visual interpretation of how old my music tastes are. Yaz, anyone?

Although I usually go by the moniker DJ Jazzy Dim, I’m horrible at playlists. I have been meaning to update my nano for months–U2, U2, Will Smith, Lyle Lovett, Ani DiFranco, U2–and it’ll probably be when the lilacs bloom around here before I get around to it.

SBS is a better mixologist, but even she gets in ruts. (She loves her Nellie, Britney, Enrique Iglesias, Glee…yes, we spend too much time together.)

Which is why we’re turning to you, dear mother runners, to help us with Groovy Tunes, a new section of our soon-to-be-launched, redesigned website. We want a boatload of playlists: hip hop to country to techno to folksie. (And yes, all styles can be in one playlist.)

So we’d love for you to gather a playlist of your fave tunes. Or send us one you already have.

Here are some guidelines:

  • Please classify your playlist–what kind of workout you think it works best for. Options: mellow run, regular run, tough run, race day, at the track, strength training. If it doesn’t fit into any of these, then it’s unclassified.
  • Please give us a one-sentence intro to your list: I grooved to this as I nailed my 10K PR. or I listen to this to reminisce about  my college days.
  • Please put your songs in this format. Song: artist. Example: If I Had $1,000,000: The Barenaked Ladies*
*See: I told you I needed to update my lists
  • Feel free to give us short commentary after a song, if you like. Example: Faster: Matt Nathanson (his voice makes my feet fly)
  • The list can be as long as you like.
  • Like I said, you can mix all styles of music. I see nothing wrong with Bruce + Barenaked + Beyonce + Alabama, so feel free to give us a pu pu platter.
  • Feel free to give us more than one playlist, but please be sure to do all the steps above for each one.
  • If you have a blog or a twitter account, please include the full link to it, and we’ll link it to your list.
  • If you want to include a pic of you running to go with your list, we’d love to see one. (Attach as a .jpg please.)
  • When you’re all done, e-mail it to use as a word document (with the suffix .doc or .docx) to runmother at gmail dot com.
  • There is no deadline–we want to build a huge, ongoing library–but the new website will be up and running, fingers crossed, by the end of February. So if you want it to be launched with the new site, we need your lists by February 17th.

I think that about covers it. My guidelines make it look way more complicated than it really is, so don’t let them deter you. Let’s hear what you’ve got!

{{Also, if there are any great techy mother runners out there that can recommend a plugin or guide me on how to easily insert playlists so you can actually sample the song into a wordpress website, feel free to pipe up at runmother at gmail dot com. I found playlist.com, but it seems like they’re missing a bunch of songs. Thanks.}}

This is a great post idea! I have to admit I only use the playlists that I find here on AMR! I’m excited to see what everyone lists here though!

  3. I’m NOT techie. Is there any way to link the playlists to iTunes so the link pops up the playlist and we can pay for it and download it/? Oh, yeah, make things difficult!! I know I can look them up individually but I think you’ll get so many of these playlists commented that it’ll take a really long time…..
Anywho, someone who knows what they’re talking about would probably be able to answer this one for me

When I first started running I only listened to one song over and over and over again until I hit my first 3 miles. Get Over It by the Eagles.
My playlist is a weird assortment from Tony Bennett and Ray Charles to Led Zeppelin and the Dixie Chicks. It will be fun to see what everyone is listening to on their runs.

I will try to get my list posted soon.

I love Enrique Iglesias – I like how it feels, Tonight I’m Loving You, and I Like It.
Katy Perry – One that Giot Away
Rihanna — so many great ones, SOS, S & M, Love the Way You Lie (both hers and Eminems versions)
Ting Tings – That’s Not My Name
Britney Spears – Criminal, Cold as Fire
Kid Rock – All Summer Long
Lil Wayne and Kevin Rudolph – Let it Rock

  6. Kate says:

What an awesome idea! Can’t wait to use them and perhaps contribute!

  7. Love it, just emailed mine off and I post all mine here on my blog, although I need to do a new one! http://slowmotherrunner.blogspot.com/p/play-lists.html

  8. Must have variety in temp and attitude while I run or I get bored! I always ‘shuffle’ so these don’t play in any particular order. This is for my ‘everyday’ runs:

    Zumba Kumbia > Zumba Workout
Somewhere Over The Rainbow > IZ
Pumped Up Kicks > Foster the People
Cosmic Love > Florence + The Machine
C’Mon and Dance > Zumba Fitness
Big Rock Candy Mountain > Lisa Loeb
Baila Pa Emociona Calypso > Zumba Fitness
Che Che Khule > Shimbabo Worldbeat
Why Didn’t You Call Me > Macy Gray
    Caligula > Macy Gray
That’s The Way I Like It > KC & The Sunshine Band
Gonna Make You Sweat > C+C Music Factory

    Cool down sometimes includes;
Raga Kaushi Kanhara > Ravi Sankar
    Ali > Midival Punditz

  9. Has anyone heard of the “Pick’n On Series”? It’s awesome rock and pop songs done in bluegrass. Who doesn’t love to air banjo while on a run?!

  10. Bari says:

Have you heard of the site jog.fm? You set your target pace and it selects songs based on beats per minute that will work with that pace. There is also an iphone app, but the reviews of it are pretty bad. I’ve used the site to build playlists though.

I want to try this, so if you want a guinea pig I’m happy to be one!

  12. Angela Ybarrondo says:

When I’m feeling sluggish and just can’t go on anymore, these songs get me going.

    Great for speedwork!
“Last Man Standing” by Bon Jovi
    “Runaway” by Bon Jovi
“Million Miles Away” by The Offspring
“Dammit I changed Again” by The Offspring
“Looks that Kill” by Motley Crue (this one makes me want to look good even at mile 10!)

This is great for keeping a good pace:
“4 Minutes” by Justin Timberlake/Madonna (makes me want to dance during my run!)
“What You Waiting For” by Gwen Stafani
