Follow This Mother!

Cori Nicholls, a 35-year-old Canadian mother to  3-year-old identical twin girls, is training for the Goofy Challenge at Walt Disney World with Team in Training. Her fundraising will benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada. Cori, who lives in Langdon, Alberta (about 20 miles east of Calgary), started running after learning a friend was diagnosed with Lymphoma. “Anna’s diagnosis inspired me to start running, but I found I loved the sport and especially loved racing. Through Team in Training, I met some of the best friends I have ever had–and through through their connections to blood cancers, I have turned what was once an idea to flit through my head into my mission to make a difference.”

Best recent run: This would have to be the first run after I changed to an entirely different shoe earlier this month. I don’t know if it was the electric blue with the neon laces, but I’d like to think that gave me a little extra pep to my step. I headed out the door, intent on taking them for an easy 3K—they are much more minimalist than my usual Asics—but at 1K – the IT Band tightness I had been feeling just seemed to float away from my leg and at 1.5K I was NOT ready to turn back. So, I kept going—floating, flying and loving every minute. It was amazing. In fact, while I say it was my best recent run, it might have been one of my all-time best runs. And it was only 5K!

Inspired to run: I was never a runner until my friend ended up with Lymphoma. The first thought to pass through my head was, “I need to find a run for lymphoma and do it!” When I told my husband, he looked at me and said “But you’re not a runner,” to which I responded: “I guess I’m going to become one!” Soon, I was following Couch to 5K and signed up to run Nike Women’s Half Marathon with Team in Training.
Running & raising $: I truly believe that an idea can be a fundraiser. You don’t need to over think it–just put it into motion and see how it goes. Even if you only raise $20, it is $20 more than you had before. That is how I came up with the idea for my Virtual Half Goofy Challenge as a fundraiser. I was brushing my teeth one night and the idea came to me. When it comes to fundraising, you have nothing to lose and your cause has everything to gain.
Book-lovin’ runner: Reading is a huge part of my life. It makes me so proud that my daughters are already becoming obsessed with books. When Run Like a Mother came out, it was such perfect timing as I was a new runner and a new mother, and I really needed to know I wasn’t alone. I actually buy it for friends the moment they tell me they are expecting. Other running books I adore: Born to Run by Christopher McDougall (just all-around inspiring) and The Non-Runners Marathon Guide for Women by Dawn Dais (so freaking funny!)

When Cori was selected as a medal bearer for the 25th Anniversary Rick Hansen relay, she wanted to share the experience with her daughters. “It was so cold that day, but they were troopers and ran the last quarter of my leg with me. I made them their own commemorative medals for their part in the day.”

Healthy shoe obsession: With a size 11 foot, shoes can be hard to come by for me. I started in Nikes, moved on to Asics and have now discovered the beautiful Saucony Kinvaras and, quite possibly, my holy grail when it comes to running shoes. I never intended to buy so many, but I fell in love with the first pair, then I found a second pair for $50 on clearance. The third, well with that gorgeous teal, how could I resist? As for my three pairs in September, well, I’ve finally justified it: one pair to leave at work, one pair for long runs and one pair for those weekends I have two long runs.

2013: Focus on family. Right now, I am focused on finishing Goofy injury-free and with a smile on my face. Any races I have planned for the rest of the year are just for fun and are going to be slow training runs. In 2013, however, I am going to be focusing more on having fun and bringing my kids more into the running with me.  They love to run and always want to run with me, so I’ll be entering them in kid’s races and doing more family fun runs. Making sure they grow up with great attitudes toward their health is my number one priority as a mom. That and making sure they have fun while we do it!

      Then I can reassure you that it is about to get really fun. Three year olds are hilarious on their own…but give them a doppelganger to bounce their comments off of and you almost have a stand up comedy show!

    What a fantastic story you have! And I’ve GOT to know…since it’s on my bucket list…just how do you train for the Goofy Challenge?! That’s 13.1 on Sat and 26.2 on Sun, right? I’ve trained for a half, I’ve trained for a full, but I haven’t trained to run them on sequential days!! I’ve got to figure it out…can you help? Nice work on the fundraising…I ran my first (and only, so far) full marathon on a charity team, raising money for the MS Society (in memory of my Mom and in honor of a very good friend struggling with the disease). The fundraising is so easy to do, people’s generosity blows me away, and it makes my runs all the more meaningful to me. Happy miles to you!

      I’ve been following a plan that was based on the Jeff Galloway Goofy training plan. My TNT coach and I tweaked it a fair bit to make it much better for me. I like it because I am only running double long runs every third weekend and the weekdays are manageable on my lunch break at work. I actually have the plan posted on the Run page of my blog: http://www.readwriterunmom.com/p/run.html It’s a google calendar so you can flip back and forth between months. and feel free to email me if you have questions!

    Wow! Good luck on your Goofy challenge! It sounds like a fantastic idea!

    PS For the very first time yesterday, my 3-year-old saw identical twins (running in 1st place at the Varsity level of my boys’ cross country meet). She exclaimed, “WHAT?!?! That’s the SAME GIRL!” {SIGH} No, it’s not, but YOU try explaining that to an illogical 3-year-old!

      That’s hilarious. We’ve had trouble explaining the twin thing to them. They used to think that there were an infinite number of kids that looked just like them and would spend hours in front of the mirror talking to them…

      Now if only I could get them to understand that other kids have the same names as they do. It doesn’t help that our “classic” names ended up being tops in popularity that year…
