Forums: Connect with Another Mother Runner

A huge, sweaty welcome to the another mother runner forums, an exclusive but inclusive—that makes sense, right?—place to connect, chat, ask, analyze, and dream big with other runners. The beauty of this running forum is that, unlike our Facebook page, the status updates don’t float by in less than a day. Here they are, accessible whenever you need the 411.

Anything is game here: questions about training, nutrition, sports bras, leaking on the run, whatever. Two categories we think are pretty cool: a match.com for mother runners, where you can find a BRF (best running friend) and free gear swap, a place to find a home for your newish gear you never use. (The recipient pays only for shipping; thank you in advance for respecting this rule.)

So whatever you've got—IT band problems; stroller questions; a picture-perfect race; shoe issues—lay it on the collective us. If you'd like to nominate a category we forgot, email us at runmother [at] gmail [dot] com. We're all here to push each other across the finish line again and again.

So... I really want to do a 10K this season. I've never done one, and I've only done 3 5K races... I started the Hal Higdon "novice" plan... it puts me at finishing the training plan around 6/8...

A few questions
1. It only has me running 3 times per week. Is it okay to stick another "easy" run in? It just seems like too little, even though I know my goal is to build up my base.
2. Is it okay to sign up for a 10K that is the week before? I really want to get it done before I go away with my family in August, and July is sadly already booked. I maybe do another one at the end of the summer... How should I do the training if I plan to do the 10K a week early?

Thanks!

Jana

A week early is not going to cause problems. As for adding another easy run in, compare your weekly mileage to the plans weekly mileage. Adding miles too fast will likely lead to an injury and derail your plans altogether. Check out the "smart coach" plans on runner's world. It can be customized to a shorter training period and level of aggression in training. The paid version allows for more customization but the free version lets you make as many training plans as you like. Experiment and compare with the Higdon plan. I have used and like both.

I agree with Jana - you could do a week early just fine. And she gives good advice about the mileage.
