Forums: Connect with Another Mother Runner

A huge, sweaty welcome to the another mother runner forums, an exclusive but inclusive—that makes sense, right?—place to connect, chat, ask, analyze, and dream big with other runners. The beauty of this running forum is that, unlike our Facebook page, the status updates don’t float by in less than a day. Here they are, accessible whenever you need the 411.

Anything is game here: questions about training, nutrition, sports bras, leaking on the run, whatever. Two categories we think are pretty cool: a match.com for mother runners, where you can find a BRF (best running friend) and free gear swap, a place to find a home for your newish gear you never use. (The recipient pays only for shipping; thank you in advance for respecting this rule.)

So whatever you've got—IT band problems; stroller questions; a picture-perfect race; shoe issues—lay it on the collective us. If you'd like to nominate a category we forgot, email us at runmother [at] gmail [dot] com. We're all here to push each other across the finish line again and again.

Beautiful day here as well! We pulled out some deck chairs and hung out for a bit, took my son to a local running store for track spikes, they had a deal going on with the school so we got 10% off and he got a free tee shirt, walked the dog.
After a dismal (& I mean dismal) March of non-activity I got myself in gear last week somewhat and started moving. Started April with an hour on the treadmill, trying to look forward only.
Happy spring!

Hi all! How is it April already?! I've been reading all of your updates but just haven't had a chance to respond.

JC, yippee for moving back to AZ! How exciting!! Congrats on your race! I love reading about your races. The sand bit sounded tough though. I've run in the sand and it's super hard. Well done to get through that!

Nancy, that's great that your dad's house sold. That was fast! Glad you father is settling in. Does the home offer outings of any kind? When my grandmother was in assisted living, they had trips to Boston to symphony hall, lunch outings, theater, etc. She was pretty healthy so she also volunteered a lot. She wheeeled other residents down to church services and helped with community yard sales. Nice job on your 8 miler! It was gorgeous here yesterday as well. I ran 16.5 miles and then went into Boston to meet friends for a late lunch. Saw lots of runners out!

Lisa, are you going to RI for the that race everyone was looking to do? I'm not. We have a college tour. An hour on the treadmill is great!

Jana, haven't heard a renovation update in a while. All done? I'd love to see pictures! Sorry your hours are getting cut at work. Are you going to stay of look for something else?

Can't remember when I last updated you on everything. First, my sister is doing well. Pathology report was good. Tumor was super small, 0.4 millimeters. Margins were clear, no lymph node involvement, and estrogen receptors were positive so she can take tamoxifen post radiation. She meets with radiologist and oncologist this week but there's only a 20% chance they will recommend chemotherapy. My cousin is doing well. She is now home and doing outpatient PT to gain back her strength.

My running is going well. 6 weeks until my 39.3 challenge. I have a week off during that time when we are going to Disney, along with a taper so I really only have a few more weeks of solid training left. I ran a 20 mile race on March 26th as a training run and it went well. I recovered well too. I had a deep tissue massage and she said things felt pretty good. I was able to run 4 miles that Tuesday and also did intervals Thursday, swim class Friday, snow shoe Saturday, and 16.5 yesterday. I'm sore today though. Saw my chiropractor Friday and he gave me more PT exercises for my back so things are looking goood, knock on wood!

Ok, need to get moving! Lots to do today. Happy Monday!

Hi ladies!!
Nancy: Yes, moving back permanently to northern AZ!! Date not confirmed but it'll be this year. Very happy camper here for sure!! I'm sure your dad will need some time to accept the transition to living elsewhere. But he must be relieved that you will be nearby. It's such a drastic change for him I'm sure, hope he has more good days. I wonder how I will react when I reach 'that age?' I might just run up a mountain and see how long they will find me, haha!!

Jana: hope you are doing well. How is DD? any short runs for her? Are you (and MIL) running the Fargo event?

Erica: you always have such fun trips to plan!! I can't wait for the 'challenge' RR. Good news about your sister. The kids are growing so quickly and another school year will be completed in a month?

Hey Lisa!! we miss you, hope all is well.

I was in Phoenix all weekend after dropping off DH at airport on Saturday afternoon. Temps weren't too roasty HOT, nice around 60-70 degrees w/ a breeze. Watched the Final Four teams on Saturday night w/ DD/SIL at a Sports Bar. A band started to play after the games and I left because I was hoping to get up early and get in a run. Didn't drink (alcohol) at all except for water and a cup of regular coffee (no decaff, really?). I think it really affected my sleep. I prefer deCaff coffee. Anyway, I didn't sleep at all, kept waking up throughout the night, and by the time my alarm went off, I felt too tired for my run. Was not going to try to run on technical trail and risk injury, yikes!! Anyway, was thinking I might stay another night and watch a couple of other games, but after late breakfast w/ DD, I decided to drive home to Flagstaff. Stopped at couple of stores first. I was exhausted, was in bed at 8 pm!!
Sunday: drove to different dirt trail. I planned around 8 miles but ended up running 9.1 miles!! YIPPEE!! The longest distance for me since injury recovery. Felt good the whole run.
Monday was rest day and it was so WINDY. Gusty winds all morning, then rain/hail in the afternoon!! By 5 pm, it was SNOWING AND MORE WIND!! Power went out for about 15 min. Panic!! Because I was on my way to neighbor's to watch the NCAA men's championship game!! 😮 I was rooting for Gonzaga. 🙁
Today: Woke up to blinding sun this morning, snow everywhere but nice temps around 55 degrees this afternoon. Hope to get in a 5-7 mile run in today, trails shouldn't be too muddy/slushy.
I will be in Albq for another conference w/ DH in two weeks before returning to MN so ........ I registered for http://stepoutdoorscolorado.com/cedro-peak-ultra/
This is east of Albq., other side of the Sandia Mts. I'm running the HM, April 22. Why not?!?
So I'm leaving for Phoenix again tomorrow for the annual dental conference, till Saturday but will return Sunday. Not a great conference but I need my CEs and I can visit w/ DD/GDs before my return trip to MN. Wonder if I can get my butt up for couple of early runs, uh-huh!!

Nice to read everyone's updates.
My exercise/slackish running didn't get much better this week, just lost my mojo I guess. At least I am walking a lot at work, and for college tours. Went on one Thursday in NYC, what a miserable day, torrential downpours. We were soaking wet by the time we got on the train.
Good news is we finalized a post-graduation trip to Ireland this week! My in-laws have been twice and my FIL got to meet some 2nd cousins, we will be meeting them and also doing our own thing, I am so excited, never been! My daughter was in CA 2 weeks ago for a video competition for school, both kids are going to Disney today with my parents, and my son goes to Philadelphia for a band competition next week. Happy for them for their adventures, missing them already.
Erica- I'm not going to RI for the race, I was in RI last night to bring the kids to my parents (they are flying from there) and I don't feel like my fitness is up for it. I would like to meet people, but I feel like I've been all over this week and want to relax.
Back to more slacking this weekend, whine and sigh.
Take care!

Hi all,
A quick check in...busy weekend! Went to see a show in Boston Friday night with my sister, sister in law, and my sister's friend. It was called "Girls Night" and was so fun. The premise is 4 old high school friends are waiting at a kareoke bar for the daughter of one of the friends and whenever a song comes on, they all go sing, dance, etc. like they did 25+ years ago. It's all 80's music so that was fun. Lots of dancing by audience members too. Didn't get home until midnight. Up the next morning for a college tour with my son. It went fairly well. I was exhausted when I got home! Was supppsed to run 6 miles but it was cold, windy, and I was pooped!

Got up this morning and slogged through 10 tough miles. It never felt easy and I struggled to maintain anything under 11 min/mile. I then met my BRF Amy at my house for another 5 miles for a total of 15. Came home, ate, showered, and drove to Massachusetts for my daughter's first spring soccer game. Good game. They tied 1-1. They are in a pretty competitive league so we were happy with the result especially since it was their first game.

Got home, cooked dinner, then plopped on the couch to watch the end of the Masters. Trying to decide if I should do my missed 6 mile run tomorrow. I have a tree guy coming at 8:30 to cut a bunch of damamged and overgrown trees limbs. Supposed to be in the mid 70's! I'm so ready for spring!!!

Nancy, did you do a long run this weekend? How's your dad doing?

JC, so happy your running seems to be going well and your injured area is behaving! Yay!!

Jana, how are you doing?

Lisa, sorry you missed the Sauchett race. You've been busy with college stuff so I get that. Has Megan made a decision yet? Isn't May 1st the deadline? Almost there! What are your thoughts for the Maine Coast half? Are you still coming?

Have a good week everyone!

Hi everyone! Boy time is just flying by it's amazing... enjoyed reading your posts and catching up with your lives.

Lisa, Ireland sounds wonderful! It is definitely on our 'to do' list. Fred has family there who we have never met, in County Claire. Someday we will get there. I'm sorry your mojo has left you. Hopefully with the warmer weather it will return. You've certainly been busy with the college tours; and how awesome for your kids with their trips! How was your daughters competition in California?

Erica I am so happy for your sister and your cousin, wonderful news! Will keep them in my prayers. You've been busy with the college touring, also. Exciting times. When are you going to Disney? I'm jealous 🙂 Glad your running is going well, looking forward to hearing about your challenge

JC you amaze me, you are the Eveready Bunny, you just keep going and going...! Good for you. Hopefully you get some runs in while at the conference.

We ran 10miles Saturday morning, I felt good. Planning on running 11 this Saturday. The HM is coming up, less than 3 weeks (it's Sunday the 30th). Still have not signed up for Wineglass, I know I know I just need to do it! and now we are *thinking* about running the Rock 'n Roll (we'll do the half) marathon in Vegas in November. Dad is doing ok, thanks for asking. I would like to take him out on Sunday for Easter mass at our church and breakfast at home, but we go at 8am so I have to see if he wants that. Then his party #96! is at our house on the 22nd. That will be fun. The house sale coming along, had the home inspection just a few minor things nothing major so it looks like closing will be May 5th.

Alright I have to go do some work for work (sigh) so I will say goodnight and have a great week!

Hi everyone! Returned on Sunday from the dental convention in Phoenix, something about this event just doesn't get me too excited .........not that any conferences are all that exciting, LOL. I haven't attended in YEARS but it's been held downtown since I could remember, and downtown PHX during the day is DEAD!! It's catered towards nighttime festivities but most people tend to enjoy the Tempe downtown area. But it tends to be crowded w/ older middle-age men (pretending to drink coffee on patios) eye-googling the ASU college girls swarming the downtown on any given night. It's really weird!! Anyway, I did meet up w/ some ex-students of mine, and it was such a HUGE surprise to run into a very dear friend who moved to/lives in CA and became a Naturopathic physician. And also, she became a mother, her four month old son was w/ grandmother so I didn't get a chance to squeeze his chubby cheeks, he's adorable and a happy baby in the photos. I missed my friend and we visited during lunch each day. Definitely will be making a trip to CA to visit her and run a trail race!! 🙂 I was up early each day, driving in traffic (ugh), took me about an hour from DD's home to the convention, then again after. Just had enough energy to eat a light dinner and was in bed by 9 each night. On Saturday, I met DD/SIL for dinner and drinks and we stayed out VERY LATE!! It was fun but I really blew off any running I had planned for the weekend!! Anyway, I left Sunday after having late breakfast w/ DD. I did put on my running gear.......just in case I felt like running when I got home. Once I got to Flagstaff, I drove to a trailhead, took a 20 minute nap!! HA!! Then, ran an easy 5 miler!! YAY!! I actually felt good afterwards and the next day, Monday, rested. So today, I hope to run at least 8 miles. Rest tomorrow. On Thursday, the women trail running group are getting together so I am so excited about seeing them/running with them again.

Nancy: The Vegas RocknRoll night time event sounds awesome! It's a little pricey for me and it's a road race but I hope you get to experience it!! Where else might you go during that time? I'm only 5 hrs away, LOL!! Grand Canyon is closer though, haha!! I'm so glad your dad is adjusting and doing ok. My dad is not doing too well. I (and my siblings) have to discuss/meet with the doctors about our dad's health status. My dad doesn't realize/understand that if he doesn't share, the doctors can't help him much. My mom is ok but they are both in their 80s and my dad has become more difficult to manage. That is wonderful on the house too!! Things are moving along, that really takes away much of the stress. Hope you get in your 11 on Saturday.

Erica: You sound like a driving machine, from one end of the state to another!! Your training runs looks like it's right on schedule despite a couple of missed ones. WOW!! 15 miles, way to go!! Some runs are just about putting one foot after another. Mental toughness in training!!

Lisa: 'lost of mojo' ........tell me about it!! It's frustrating right? I felt that way from Oct to Feb but it will 'spring' back!! The walking doesn't sound like a 'walk in the park' though, you're doing something! This is where walk/run/walk came in handy for me.

Jana: I'm wondering how the weather is 'up there' lately so I can plan my return drive to MN, haha!!........I'm lost without you, LOL!! DH's forecast is always 'way off'.

Had a morning conference today at university. Not sure what the message was but enjoyed a good breakfast and networking
Tuesday, I finished 8.2 miles!! YIPPEE!! Went to a trail close to the 'peaks' and lots of hills, rocky areas which took me longer but worth it. Like Erica said about her long run "it was not easy" but made it! 😛 Took 15-30 seconds walkbreaks about every 2 miles, glad I had some sport beans. Lots of hikers and couple of serious mountain bikers. Injury area reminded me it's still healing but overall, it felt good. Lots of foam-rolling/stretching afterwards!!
Wed: rest day
Today: changed into running clothes after conference. Planning on at least 10 miles, maybe push for 11. I don't think I can get a long run in on Sat or Sun since I will be on the road. I need to 'taper' for my NM HM trail race next Saturday, the 22nd. Planning on running 6-7 miles solo first, then 3-4 miles w/ running group.

I will check in when I can after today. Might leave tomorrow, maybe Saturday. Regardless, will have limited access to internet until I'm in Albq. Take care and safe runs ladies!! 🙂
