Forums: Connect with Another Mother Runner

A huge, sweaty welcome to the another mother runner forums, an exclusive but inclusive—that makes sense, right?—place to connect, chat, ask, analyze, and dream big with other runners. The beauty of this running forum is that, unlike our Facebook page, the status updates don’t float by in less than a day. Here they are, accessible whenever you need the 411.

Anything is game here: questions about training, nutrition, sports bras, leaking on the run, whatever. Two categories we think are pretty cool: a match.com for mother runners, where you can find a BRF (best running friend) and free gear swap, a place to find a home for your newish gear you never use. (The recipient pays only for shipping; thank you in advance for respecting this rule.)

So whatever you've got—IT band problems; stroller questions; a picture-perfect race; shoe issues—lay it on the collective us. If you'd like to nominate a category we forgot, email us at runmother [at] gmail [dot] com. We're all here to push each other across the finish line again and again.

Happy Easter!

We ran 12 miles yesterday, tired but not bad! After cleaning up, we went our churches Easter food blessing, ordered food for my Dad's 96th birthday party at our house this coming Saturday, dropped by our son's new apartment - he and his girlfriend moved in together yesterday, was fun to see all them and their friends, reminded us of us a l~o~n~g time ago!, then to the mall for clothes for Utah and out to dinner. So we definitely stretched our legs, didn't stiffen up too much. Slept like a rock, haha!

Have a great day 🙂

Hi all!
Been a super busy week...what else is new?! Last I wrote, I was sitting on the couch recovering from a 15 miler, lol! Ran a super slow 5 miles the next day. I'm trying to do one back to back run per week to get ready for my 39.3 challenge. Not easy but with no time goals, I think I'll be able to finish. Tuesday, I spent the day shopping with my 2 best friends. Fun! Bought a new tank top for my marathon. Wednesday, went swimming since I was going to miss my swim class Friday. Watched my very first girls lacrosse game that night. Emma's never played but decided to try it. She had 2 assists (along with lots of dropped balls, lol) and said it was fun. Thursday, I saw a registered dietitian for a resting metabolic rate test and consolation. No surprise to learn my metabolism is slower than it should be. Working to improve that so I can lose a bit of weight. I'm not looking to get into a bikini but am mostly concerned about my pre-diabetes and osteopenia. Friday, I met my sister and we sent the day together in Maine. Went to the outlets for exciting things like new underwear, lol and had a nice lunch by the ocean and walked along the Marginal Way. Saturday morning I slugged through my last 20 miler. I was fine until about mile 12. It was hot and I had stomach issues. I think I've been fighting a mild virus and I felt like I was going to throw up. I didn't but it wasn't my best long run. I hosted my brother and his family on Easter and that was nice and relaxing. (Aside from the cooking and cleaning). Went to watch the Boston Marathon yesterday. So inspiring!! After that, took my daughter to a consultation for her wisdom teeth followed by some outlet shopping for some things she needs for our vacation. We leave for Disney on Saturday night. Lots to do before we go!

Nancy, nice job on the 12 miler! Woohoo!! Happy 96th to your dad! Hope he enjoyed his birthday.

JC, can't wait to hear about your trail half on Saturday. I'll think of you as I'm running that morning. Take it easy though. Oh, and take pictures, lol!

Lisa, any glimpses of your running mojo? I'll probably be in the missing mojo boat after my race next month. I only have a month off before I need to train for Chicago so hopefully I'll have enough time to rest, recover, and keep whatever mojo I have. Always a struggle. Looking forward to Maine!!

Jana, hope all is well!

Well, have a great day everyone!

Oh boy Erica I am tired reading your post, haha. No, no I am teasing you, you are incredibly active always on the go. I was going to say enjoy a relaxing vacation, but Disney is certainly NOT a relaxing vacation. Where are you staying? I like my FB feed that shows you posts from X years ago, all last week I was getting photos from my last Disney trip 3 years ago... good times 🙂

So when is your 39.3? I presume you are doing a half one day and a full the next? Is that the one in Maine in May when I am in Utah? I am sure you will do well, despite your worries about not having the best runs. I hope you are feeling better, no virus wanted during vacation!

Fun to shop! We've been doing some for our trip 🙂 cannot wait to go, 23 more days. We also booked a cruise for next February, that's only 288 days away! (I have a countdown on my cell).

Jana, JC, Lisa - I hope all is well with you ladies and your are healthy and having good runs 🙂

Easter was ok, I drank too much wine (after giving it up for Lent) and it really hit me hard. Stayed home Monday. Tuesday ran outside before work and hoping to do so tomorrow, hopefully the rain passes. Saturday we will do 6 then get ready for my Dad's party. The following weekend is the half. After the Utah trip (week of May 15) we will start training for our first full, signed up for the Wineglass Oct. 1st. Still debating if we really want to spend the $ to run a half at Vegas. I think it would be cool to run down the strip at night. Have to check typical weather and costs for that time of year.

Have a great day!

Hi all,
Currently on a JetBlue flight to Orlando 37000 feet in the air. Free wifi, woohoo! I was going to watch the movie Lion but the subtitles were too small on the tiny screen so I watched an episode of The Crown on Netflix.

Nancy, my 39.3 is May 13th and 14th in Biddeford, Maine. Half Saturday and full Sunday. Did my second 20 miler last week and had a very strong 16 miler today. Taper time!

We are staying at the Boardwalk Hotel this time. We splurged (well, I had a coupon) since we may not be going much in the coming years as my babies get older. It's certainly not a relaxing vacation! We typicallywalk 8-10 miles a day so no running this week.

You must be getting excited for your trip! Also, so excited you signed up for your first marathon!!! That's awesome!! I've heard Wineglass is nice. Might have to put it on my list.

JC, hope your trail race went well today. Can't wait to hear all about it.

Lisa, sounds like you had a good (but cold and wet) run today. I wore capris and a thick-ish long sleeve top and it was just right. It was misty and sometimes sprinkling so while I didn't get too wet, I was damp. Loved the cooler temps though!

Jana, hope you are well! Did your daughter have an April vacation?

Well, better sign off. Want to make sure this posts. Probably won't check back in until we get home next week. Enjoy the week!

Jana

Good to hear from you all.

Erica, it sounds like you are training well! Even if some of those runs aren't great you are getting in the mileage. Have fun in Disney. The days of walking with no running will be good for you. We are postoning our Hogwarts trip until October.

We did have a couple of days off for Easter but we didn't go anywhere. I got a little bit done on the second floor remodel and figured out how to solve some of my problem issues up there.

Nancy, I hope that your dad had a great party. I am excited for you tackling the full!

JC, it sounds like you have turned the corner on your injury. Good luck racing. I can't wait to read the Race Report. Exciting that you finally get to move back home. I know that Minnesota was not really your thing but you made the best of it while you were here.

My half marathon (Fargo) is in 3 weeks. This training cycle, I have lost 2 weeks (in separate months) to illness. I am almost never sick. I am coming to the realization that I have spring allergies. I didn't know that you could still acquire allergies in your fifties but there you have it. Thankfully, antihistamines are much improved these days. Other than those set backs, I have gotten in most of my runs and enjoyed most of my miles.

I am having trouble getting up early to run though. I thought I was ready to commit this week because the sun is coming up earlier and it was really nice out. But then the temps dropped into the twenties and the winds came up. And then started the freezing rain and snow. That is thankfully passed now and perhaps next week I can return to morning running. Not much hope for a speedy half but I am not much concerned either. Just hoping for a nice day - not too hot; not too windy.

Happy running.

Hello again from up in the air on JetBlue. Making our way to Boston via Washington DC. Had a fun trip but need to get back to my routine (mostly eating healthy foods!). Most days we walked 7-8 miles, took a break/nap back at our hotel, and didn't overdo it. So that was nice.

Jana, that's great that you are doing Fargo! I haven't been too concerned lately with speed either. It's all about getting out there and enjoying the day. I have wicked allergies all year long and take a daily 24 hour Zyrtec. On really bad days, I take one every 12 hours. The allergist said it was ok to double dose. Sorry you've been sick. It's been a tough winter for all sorts of nasty bugs, colds, and flus.

Nancy, have you started training for Wineglass? Are you going to follow a plan?

JC, race report??? Hope you are well.

Lisa, I'll message you soon to get our plans together for Maine Coast. I will be heading up of Friday and staying through Monday. Can't wait!!

Signing off now. About to land in DC. Happy weekend!

Hello everyone!

Jana I hope the weather has improved for you. It is so much nicer to run outside than on the TM. Freezing rain and snow, oh no! Enough of that! As well as allergies. Thank goodness for medication. So your race is May 13 or 20th? Good luck, I will be on vacation but cheering you on!

How much more re-modeling do you have to do? It'll be all worth it in the end, but during... ugh.

Erica I have enjoyed seeing your photos on FB. Love Disney! So much walking but so much fun 🙂

Dad's party went very well! The weather was so-so, cloudy upper 50's but we were still able to be outside on the patio, kids playing in the yard and my Dad was just so happy 🙂 When the guys took him back to the nursing home my husband said he was asleep before they left the room!

Picked up our bibs today, tomorrow (Sunday) is the NJ Marathon/Half, we are doing the half. Current weather forecast at 8am is 57degrees and cloudy. The weather keeps changing, I just hope the thunderstorms they are predicting for tonight do occur tonight and not tomorrow morning!

Planning on using the TLAM Finish It plan for the Wineglass. Training should start May 15, but we are on vacation that week in Utah so will start it next week then 'just' hike in Utah for a week and pick it up again when we return.

Enjoy the rest of April!

🙂 Hi ladies!! Sorry for being MIA for a few weeks!! 😮 Returned to northern MN on Thursday. Drove through RAIN, WIND, SNOW, SLEET IN northern NM and into most of CO. Made it to North Platte, NE, cold temps but nice and sunny till I got into South Dakota. Started snowing so I stayed in Aberdeen, SD at DH's aunt home. She drove in from Fargo and talked me into staying the night because of the snowstorm and bad road conditions on the interstate. By the time I got into MN, some rain now and then but the snow was still around. Most of it has melted by now, yesterday was SUNNY and high 50s!! YAY!!

King of the Hill Trail race 10k, Los Lunas, NM (30 miles south of Albq, NM):
I stayed w/ DS/DIL the night before in Albq. It took me less than 30 mins to get to race location, most of drive is on I-25. Ate a banana and drank some Powerade zero, and water. Was early and it was around 33 degrees!! Brrrr but the sunrise was gorgeous!! Small event, small crowd but big on enthusiastic cheers!! From the start line, you can see the 'hills' and cheered on HM runners. Boy, I wished I was running that event!! I talked w/ a couple of female runners, around 20/30 yr olds. They asked about my collapsible water bottle that I can hold on my palm w/ a holder, made by Salomon. It's perfect for short races. I felt good and rested, strategy was to walk the hills and keep moving. About 50 runners for 10k. Started in the back, after a mile, the first hill, the steepest came into view!! 😮 Jogged up to halfway and power-walked the rest, started passing others too, yippee!! Then at the top, it got SANDY, and stayed mostly sandy the whole distance!! Tough going but I kept pushing myself. Took couple of 15 sec walk breaks, injury area feeling ok till the steep descent around 4.5 miles. Lost a couple of minutes there as I slowed down. Finally around 5 miles, it turned to hard-packed dirt road. Then I could hear a female runner breathing HARD behind me, she's struggling but as she passed me, the whiff of her perfume almost made me pass out!! 😮 She slowed down. I passed her, and that perfume gave me a headache!! She passed me again ..........okay, that's enough. I picked up my pace the last mile. I could hear her and I kept going faster. Her friend is cheering for her the last 1/4 of the race "pass her!!" That was probably the only time in the race that I actually 'raced' ........finished ahead of her. She was exhausted, hands on knees, etc. I gave her a high five and she thanked me for keeping her on pace. It was exciting for the crowd, LOL!! I felt good about my effort. There was pancakes post-race w/ lots of water/oranges/bananas!! Love these small race events!! So ate breakfast w/ couple of ladies who finished after me, they are both in their 60s!! They look awesome for their age, wow!! WE all became fast friends. We checked our times. I finished in 1:11:30. Not bad at all 😀 I got 2nd in my AG (55-59) out of 2 runners!! HA! The 1st in my AG was also 2nd OVERALL in the female category (1:02), and 10th OVERALL!! How amazing is that?!? Even if the AG was from 50-59, I still would have been second. The over-perfumed female runner that I beat came in 1st in her AG (50-54). Anyway, I was 27th/51; 2nd in AG (55-59); 10th overall female category. I was satisfied w/ my time and effort. It just felt so GREAT to be running dirt trails again!! This is my first race of the year 😀
