Hump Day Giveaway: Box O’ Cheese + WDA goodies

During the summer months, mini marinated mozzarella balls are one of my top five favorite foods. There’s just something about their chilled creaminess coupled with a vinegary pucker that fits so well with a steamy hot day. Another summertime favorite is an Italian flag salad (a.k.a. the Caprese salad if you want to be fancy), which really just a dish of sliced tomatoes and mozzarella, shingled in a circle and decorated with basil leaves.

The Western Dairy Association knows how cheese can play a key role in an easy summer meal. Their Spring Mozzarella Salad is just one step fancier than a standard Caprese -- and might be a nice change of pace from an old standby. Using the cheese-and-dressing combo as the base, you could really build just about any veggie-based meal you have a hankering for. Grill some extra zucchini or onions or eggplant next time you fire up the barbie and dinner is done for the week.

(Anyone else think of this guy when the words “hanker” and “cheese” and in close proximity? Or am I showing my age?)

  3. My go-to cheese in the summer months is swiss cheese. I feel this is the best year-round choice for sandwiches!

  4. I like mozzarella during the summer because if it’s fresh it’s actually very light tasting. Plus it pairs well with so many things.

  5. It would have to be Mozzarella cheese! I love having Caprese towers with jersey tomatoes fresh basil and balsamic vinaigrette.

  6. I love my mozzarella cheese anytime but during the summer months you take some fine aged sharp cheddar and swiss, and maybe some Jack and mix them up in a salad of greens. Yummy.

  7. It’s a tie between Mozzarella and Feta…both so delicious!! I use the Mozzarella on summer pastas and caprese salads and the feta in quiches and egg dishes.

  8. I hate to jump on the mozzarella bandwagon, but I love heirloom tomatoes, drizzled with balsamic vinegar, and mozarella is such a perfect addition to this light meal!

  9. Marinated Cheese Appetizer! Its a beautiful dish & so delicious! Sharp cheese, cream cheese basil, parsley, green onion, olive oil, salt, pepper, sugar, garlic, balsamic vinegar served with sliced french baguette…..delicious!!

  10. There is not a cheese I dislike but my summer fave is fresh mozzarella with garden tomatoes and basil. Yum!

  11. My husband and I discovered Merlot Cheese and have become addicted to it. I always have to have a chunk of it in my fridge. It is the most unusual nutty flavor and go great with wine!

  12. I’m going with brie. It softens so quickly on my Phoenix counters. I always hanker for a hunk of cheddar though… mmmm… cheese…

  13. My favorite summer cheese would have to be goat cheese. Pair it with a beet salad or slathered on crackers. Delicious!

  15. How does a person pick just one? I agree fresh mozzarella is amazing in summer salads, and I love pepperjack on sandwiches and burgers. And what about cream cheese in dessert?!

  16. I pretty much love all cheese. In summer, I love the salty freshness of feta – perfect in salads, and love it with grilled chicken

  18. I’m from WI and we buy all our cheese from Hennings, the local cheese-maker because it’s so awesome! The best are the fresh cheese curds made that morning and they squeak when you eat them!

  20. I don’t have a seasonal cheese preference, although mozzarella and fresh garden tomatoes in a caprese salad could be the winner!

  21. YES! I always sing that song when I’m hankering for a hunka cheese. As for my favorite… Cabot Seriously Sharp Cheddar. I could honestly eat an entire block in one sitting. I loooove it!

    I love blue cheese on burgers and in salads. I use goat cheese with spinach salads too – anything so I don’t have to turn on the oven!

  25. I love all cheese! But right now feta – in my favourite watermelon salad. Or fresh mozzarella- on pizza cooked on the grill.

  26. All! Though I do love Dubliner cheddar, plain, with crackers, in a sandwich, salad, pizza, really there is no place or food I would not put it on.

  27. Oh! All the cheese! Seriously… what I’m digging now that the weather is hot, is a little goat cheese crumbled on top of some spinach with a handful of candied pecans and red onions, dressed with a zesty italian. YUM!

  28. BTW – Adrienne, I love “Time for Timer”! We say “hankering for hunk of cheese” and “look, a wagon wheel” all of the time. I miss good old Saturday morning cartoons and cheesy after-school specials.

  29. I grow my own tomatoes and basil, so a good mozzarella really hits the spot during the summer months. A nice creamy goat cheese is a close second, as it combines well with berries, salads, figs, and jalapeño poppers.

  31. There’s not a cheese I don’t love! But right now I’m obsessed with extra ages sharp white cheddar. The drier the better.

  32. a triple creme goats milk brie (I am lactose intolerant) on a cracker with a bit of jelly. I have to resist eating the entire wheel. but, thank you WDA for providing lactose free chocolate milk at the Rock N Roll Seattle finish line. I was so excited (after I accused the guy of lieing to me)!

  33. mozzarella. Always and forever. I don’t like a whole lot of other cheeses, but Mozz is the reason I am not vegan.

  34. Whoops; cheese, not just dairy product. For cheese, manchego. Nice and sharp. I’ll go drink more coffee now.

  35. Greek yogurt. To be fair, I am an all-season Greek yogurt fan for breakfast, but its cooling deliciousness is awesome for all meals during the summer (smoothies that don’t weigh me down in the am, salad dressings and an awesome smoked salmon dip for an easy lunch, dinner, or snack) that I tend to go a little curd-crazy in the warm months.

  36. I’ve never met a cheese I didn’t like but in the summer, caprese salads are one of my favorite ways to eat tomatoes. So in that case it’s fresh mozzarella all the way!

  37. Fresh mozzarella. We grow basil and tomatoes but don’t have a dairy cow so I would love some fresh cheeses

  38. Feta – but no one else in my family likes or eats it, so I don’t usually get to eat it unless I am eating out…

  39. Summer veggies stir fried with some garlic and then sprinkled with shreds or parmesan… my idea of a perfect summer meal! But for snacking, it has to be Cotswold.

  41. I am not fancy. There’s a sliced smoked gouda from Aldi that I love – I’ll eat it plain, on a burger, melted on a bagel, pretty much any application.

  42. ALL cheese is my fav! haha…actually parma is prob my fav becasue it pairs well with so many things – wine, pasta – cold and hot, and adds a little zing!

I am sad to say that I’m dairy free year round, for the most part, due to stomach issues (especially when running!), but have two times per year that I indulge: Christmas Eve, we make Glamour Pizza (thin crust, pesto, goat cheese, kalamata olives, sundried tomatoes—YUM), and in July, when I have my girlfriends’ weekend with two of my best friends, and I eat whatever cheese thing we have/make. Favorite, then? goat cheese, by far. Smooth, delicious, creamy, special!

  44. Cheese is a food group in my opinion … picking just one is like picking your favorite child! Right now, I am loving a good aged cheddar … as it ages the salt starts to crystalize! Yummy! The perfect post run treat to replenish the salt lost in sweat!

  46. All cheese is good in the summer or anytime of the year! But I do love a good sharp cheddar or white cheddar!

  47. I love the portable Babybel cheeses, for myself and my kiddo summer, or year round! We love anything that has cheese as an accent!

  48. It’s not fancy but I love my kids’ string cheese for a grab and go snack! It’s perfect any time of day since I’m usually the last one to eat!

  49. Anything fancy served on a platter at someone else’s house! I grew up on cheddar variations (in WI) and love fancier cheeses but struggle staring into the deli case trying to buy them myself.

  50. I LOVE a margarita pizza with goat cheese! Something about the basil, tomatoes and the zip of the goat cheese with a glass of wine! Yummy!!

  51. What do you mean, “which” cheese? I love ’em all! Though recently I have been pilfering the string cheese I bought for the kid…

  52. I too love mozzarella in the summer, usually in a caprese salad. But horseradish cheese is my favorite year round!

  53. Feta! Bit of quinoa, some chopped kale and all the veggies in the fridge diced up – too with feta and drizzle with dressing is my summer go to!

  54. Feta on a Greek salad is my replacement for a cup of soup for lunch. Love me some mozzarella with fresh tomatoes and basil too!

  55. My favorite (year round) to cook with is REAL Parmesan, the calcium content is 35% so you get lots of bang for your buck to help those bones!

  56. I love goat cheese (chevre) no matter what season it is; it’s always my favorite. But I maybe eat more feta in various salads and other meals in the summer. Love that, too!

  57. I love mini fresh mozzarella balls, too. I pop them into a salad with spinach, tomatoes and some slivered almonds. Yum!

  58. Mozzarella for my caprese salad made w farmers market tomatoes, basil from the garden and topped with lemon juice/EVOO

  59. Mozzarella and Parmesan make for my favorite summertime fresh tomato pie. Can’t wait for all the tomatoes to be ready.

  61. I love feta with watermelon! It’s hard to choose just one…mozzarella and fresh basil from the garden with a drizzle of olive oil and balsamic vinegar!

  62. In the summer, definitely mozzarella to make a caprese salad. I then start getting crazy and add other things like toasted pine nuts, avocado, corn cut straight off the cob… Then top it off with grilled chicken to get my protein.
