Forums: Connect with Another Mother Runner

A huge, sweaty welcome to the another mother runner forums, an exclusive but inclusive—that makes sense, right?—place to connect, chat, ask, analyze, and dream big with other runners. The beauty of this running forum is that, unlike our Facebook page, the status updates don’t float by in less than a day. Here they are, accessible whenever you need the 411.

Anything is game here: questions about training, nutrition, sports bras, leaking on the run, whatever. Two categories we think are pretty cool: a match.com for mother runners, where you can find a BRF (best running friend) and free gear swap, a place to find a home for your newish gear you never use. (The recipient pays only for shipping; thank you in advance for respecting this rule.)

So whatever you've got—IT band problems; stroller questions; a picture-perfect race; shoe issues—lay it on the collective us. If you'd like to nominate a category we forgot, email us at runmother [at] gmail [dot] com. We're all here to push each other across the finish line again and again.

RR: Cedro Peak trail marathon April 27

Drove to/stayed with my wonderful cousin in Albq.NM. We ate some spaghetti for dinner. Got up at 4:30 am. Put bandaids on all potential blister areas on both feet, then wrapped it with thin adhesive tape. Rub some Friction on the area, then put on Injini socks, compression calf sleeves, running skirt, short sleeved tech shirt, then a long-sleeved tech shirt. Ate toasted english muffin w peanut butter, and decaf coffee on the way to race location. Took me about 30 minutes. It's 44 degrees when I get to the race location. NICE!! slight breeze. Cloudless day.

Checked in and got race bib and race hoodie, it's really nice!! Sat in car, finishing eating and hydrating. Tried on race hoodie, it's too small. ugh!! So while I took my drop off bag to area, I asked if I could exchange it. Yes, I can! Back to car, got a couple of additional items for drop off bag. Got race hoodie. Back to check in, exchanged it. Then put race hoodie on bench while I put items in drop off bag. Totally spaced out the race hoodie!! ugh!! Didn't know this till later that night.

Annnnnyway.

Wore visor, buff on ears and small waist bag with 2 collapsible bottles. Both marathon and 50K runners start at 7 am. Took it slow and easy, finding a good pace. First/Last A.S. is about a mile, then a 4.7 mile loop, back to first A.S. before turning right, about another 4 miles to next A.S., then up and down on very rocky technical single track. It's about close to 10 miles and I'm feeling good about finishing between 6-7 hrs.
I caught up with a F runner and she is relieved to see another runner. She has already tripped twice and has a gash on her shin. After reaching the top of this hill, we didn't see the arrow for a left turn. A male runner catches us and we tell him we may have missed a turn but he says to follow him. The course has been well-marked with pink flags so I'm hesitate. The female and I questioned it and we SHOULD have turned around but the male runner tells us that he ran this last year and we are on the right course. The F runner ran it last year too but doesn't remember the course.

I kept looking for the PINK flags, and getting concerned but the M runner kept saying it was the right way. Finally after 2 miles, the M runner admitted we are on the wrong trail and he turns around and leaves us!! We didn't get his name or number, I can't believe I didn't ask!!
I suggested we turn around but the F runner does not want to and is getting tired but knows that we have to go up and reach the tower which is in our sight and wants to go another 1/2 mile .......but the trail/dirt road has too many switchbacks. I don't wear a Garmin but she does and keeps track of the distance. But she turns it off when we are standing around, and turns it back on when we go. She forgot a couple of times though.

I finally persuaded her to turn around, we walk/jogged back. Finally getting back to the missed turn!!
This is an out and back. I'm doing ok but F runner isn't. She doesn't want to continue but we know it will be put down as a DNF..........I've yet to have one and I'm not starting now. F runner doesn't either but she is dejected and keeps telling me how far we still have to go.

But I told her we are just going from A.S. to A.S. to check in and we can rest. That sounds more do-able. I told her I was not going to leave her. She follows me. She came here with 5 others. 4 are running the trail marathon, 1 is running the HM. They are all from south Texas. We meet up with a couple of them on this trail and told them what happened. I told them I can take her back to the hotel after the race so they don't have to wait for her.

We finally got to the next A.S. They were wondering what happened. We told them. But they won't give us a break. We still have to go up to the top (a mile and back) and check in!! This is the turnaround point. The F runner doesn't want to. I told her we can walk up and jog down. I don't care about time anymore and she just doesn't care at all, LOL!!

We make it to the top and back down to the same A.S. Grabbed some PB&J wraps, I ate some pickles and chips and hydrated with Tailwind. Filled my bottles with water. We walked the rocky hilly portions/jogged the dirt portions. We talked. She is 61, WOW!! She looks younger than that; she is more of a road runner. She is getting cramps. She eats mustard and cramping ceases. I read about that but have never tried it. It worked for her, wow!! She trips again but gets right up and continues.

She's lagging behind and I have to stop now and then. She is swearing, LOL!! She finds out she lost her water bottle 'somewhere,' probably when she tripped. I have plenty. We meet up with mountain bikers, they offer encouragement. Then the 2 sweeper runners.

We jog to the last A.S. It's only a mile to the finish. We sit down and she is totally wiped out. But she says she will finish. I told her I'm going to run and she waves me off. I get a burst of energy, and I take off.
Ran up the last rocky hill, the volunteers are cheering at the top. Then about another 1/4 mile across the parking area to the finish!! YAY!! F runner finishes about 5 minutes after me. She is walking but I run her in. She places 1st in her AG (60-69).

My official time: 7:37:35. OV 34/36. 20/21 Female. 7/7 AG. Can you believe I wasn't a last finisher?!? My goal was between 6-7 hrs. Our total miles ended up just over 30 miles!! Almost a 50K, HA!!

Met the rest of the F runner's group. F runner kept hugging me and thanking me for staying with her. I told her that if it was just us at the missed turn, we would have turned around and avoided all this. But it's in the past, we made it to the finish upright!.

Definitely a memorable race!! It was great course though. Things happen and you just readjust and keep plugging away. I had to take off shoe/sock at A.S. (mile 9?), tape rubbing on big toe. One of the volunteers slathered some vaseline on it and I didn't have any problems with blisters rest of the run, YAY!!
Knee complained on the downhills and it did swell up but I'm use to it after long runs. Iced it and elevate when I got back.

I'm surprised how well my recovery is going. Not much soreness or aches, yippee!!

Oh, I stopped at REI in Albq. on Sunday when I was returning home. Bought a Garmin Fenix 5S. It was on sale!! Don't think I would have bought it if it wasn't on sale, it's still ridiculous though. But my RB in MN loves hers. Have 90 days to try it out. I miss wearing an analog watch face and this was one of the selling point for me.

Wed: 3 easy miles.
Thurs(today): 6 easy miles.

Next race:
MAY 25 - Jemez Mts 50K - Los Alamos, NM

Wow JC! What an adventure!! So nice of you to bring that runner in to finish! I’m confused though, how did she get 1st in her AG when she was 5 minutes after you? So glad your blisters behaved and you’re recovering well! Did you see the guy who took you down the wrong trail? Ugh. Did he even apologize? Jerk! I’m not a trail runner so I’d be covered in bruises and blood if I tried, lol! Awesome job!!

Happy Cinco de Mayo!
Busy, busy weekend!! Picked up Ethan from RPI Friday, so 6+ hours in the car plus about an hour or more packing and carrying bins and stuff to the car. So great to have him home!!!! We talked for the entire 3 hours on the way home. He had such a great year.
Saturday was my last “long” run before my marathon. I got up, had breakfast, blew dry Emma’s hair (prom day), and then went out for my run. It was only 8 miles but it felt endless. It wasn’t hard just felt longer than it was. Guessing the time in the car plus lack of proper fueling and hydration played a part in that.
Boys went to see Endgame together while Emma went to get ready for prom at a friends house. I did laundry. Good times, lol. Then I went to take pictures of Emma and her friends in their dresses and the boys in their tuxes. So pretty!! Emma and her boyfriend wanted to go to a boy/girl sleepover at a boys house who I don’t know. We (me and Connor’s mom) decided not to let them sleepover but instead to let them go to the post prom party for s couple of hours and then spend the night here. Worked out well. The kids came home about 11 pm. Got changed, and I dropped them off. It was only 4 miles from our house. I picked them up at 1:30. They had fun. Connor slept in our guest room in the basement. Our hardwood floors creak a lot so I’d hear if Emma tried to sneak down. She didn’t. They were both tired. Danced a lot at the prom. I couldn’t sleep. Snoring husband. Set my alarm for 7. Got maybe a few hours of sleep.
My friend Liz convinced me to sign up for the Cinco de Miles 5k in the town next to mine. Got up, got dressed, had a cup of tea, add my oatmeal and hit the road. I needed to get there by 8:30 for parking and road closures. Got there around 8:15, ate, texted Liz, kept warm and dry. Liz bailed so I was mad. Got in a super long line for the porta potties (they needed more). Went back to the car, tried to warm up for a minute and decided to just go for my warm up mile. Dropped off my coat and ran to the track. The start was at the high school near the track. My skirt was falling down so that wasn’t fun. No drawstring. Grr! Oh well. Got in line near the 9-10:00 minute mile group. After the National anthem, we were off. My goal was a 2 mile warmup (one already completed on the track) and then the last 2 at race pace. The first mile was almost all down hill but I ran comfortably and my watch clicked off at 9:33. It was drizzling and about 50 but perfect for running. My skirt stopped falling down once I got sweaty. Thank goodness. Next mile was to be at marathon pace or a 9:15-:20. Mile 2 was mostly flat and a 9:13. Perfect. Ran by the water stop without taking a cup. Last mile had one good sized uphill, a shorter but steeper downhill, and then a gradual hill to the end of the 3rd mile. 8:52! I wasn’t looking at my watch. Figured I’d be slow up and faster going down. Last tenth was 7:52. 28:24. Finished, got water, a margarita, some swag, took a photo, and then was getting cold so I left. Threw out my margarita. It was yummy but it was also 10:00 and I needed to drive home. Happy with the event. I was 17th/112 of 50-54yo women, 260/1231 all women, and 526/1809 overall. Thought I’d run into someone I knew but I didn’t.
Made reservations for dinner tonight. I’ll have my margarita and it will be our first family dinner since Ethan got home.
Ok, off to finish more laundry.

Happy Day After Cinco de Mayo 😉

Wow JC that was some adventure you had on your marathon. How awful of that guy to just leave you two after he realized he took you along the wrong way. I agree with Erica, what a jerk. Glad yo stuck with that woman, that was nice of you and at the end to run her in. Good karma - what goes around comes around 🙂

I'm guessing you were in a younger age group that her, since she got first in her AG? I think it would be fun to 'run' a trail run, I did one a few years back in a local park. It was different... I really didn't run it, though; it was a lot of walking/shuffling along. Maybe because it was so crowded and narrow in the woods?

Welcome home Ethan 🙂 isn't it crazy how quickly the year went. So what is his plans for the summer?

Saw your pics of Emma on FB, just beautiful!

Good job on your 5k, bummed your friend ditched you. Your marathon is this coming Saturday, or next?

Work continues to be stressful. Crossing fingers the inspectors leave tomorrow as scheduled. Have a great week, all!

Hi!
Nancy, so far Ethan’s plans seem to center around sleeping until I get annoyed and wake him up, leaving dirty dishes on the counter, and playing video games. Lol! Next week he’s going to Maine for a few days with 4 friends from school. Then he needs to work. He also planned at trip to Disney world with another group of friends for late August. Got his grades tonight. All A’s! So proud of him!!

My marathon is Saturday!!! So far, I’ve been ok but now I’m starting to get nervous. I just don’t want another DNF! Trying to figure out my pacing. Weather looks perfect...for now. I know hat can change but so far, so good. Trying to get some neglected chores done around the house this week to keep busy. My friend Ariel is flying in Thursday. She’s doing the half.

I hope the inspectors leave soon! It’s an annual inspection, right? Or are they random?

Yay the inspectors are gone! It is an annual inspection, anywhere from 9-15months from your last inspection. It's a lot of stress, you are never sure what they are thinking or what they are going to ask. Thankfully it all went well 🙂

Congratulations to Ethan - all A's - that is fabulous! Smart young man. His plans seem pretty typical for his age, haha!

Good luck this weekend, I will be sending you speedy and healthy thoughts.

Erica: It was a memorable adventure for sure. It really was a great course and I did have fun despite the extra miles. She was the only one in the 60-69 AG. I'm 59 so I ended up 7th out of 7 in my AG. If I didn't get 'lost,' I probably would have ended up in 4th or 5th because I did pass the ones who placed ahead of me. I'm totally beyond getting all worked up about where I place anymore. I leave my ego at the starting line and just enjoy the run. I'm very grateful to be running still. I was just glad I finished upright, didn't get hurt and made a new friend.
Oh, we didn't see the guy who left us at the post-race. We told the RD and she was not happy about a runner who just leaves other runners and doesn't report it at the next A.S. I yelled after him to let the A.S. know and he waved so I assumed he did. Nope, no apology at all either. yep, a total d...k.

Erica: I'm always disappointed with 'friends' who bail out on me. It's happen a few times so I don't bother to ask anymore. Sorry your friend ditched you on a race that she talked you into!! But you placed very well in all categories!! NICE!!
How did the marathon go? Even if you have to walk now and then, I'm sure you'll finish better than you think? You really have had some good training runs. Better than me, LOL!!
Wow!! Congrats to Ethan on his report card. Now, he needs to know you are grading him on picking up after himself, HA!! My son was like that too. Now, he has improved once he got married. Especially in the kitchen!! Always immaculate when I visit. I attribute it to DIL being a 'chef.' Whatever works, right?

Nancy: glad the inspection is over, sounds like it was a stressful time. Don't need those. Yeah, we were in different AGs. She was very interesting too. We had alot of 'talking' about family, and how we got into running.

I didn't feel all that great early this week. The temps were ideal for running but the rain showers were a bit too heavy to run in, plus the trails are getting muddy/slippery. Attended some graduation ceremonies as a guest with the county. And that's all I could do to stay awake on Friday. Must be the weather but I kept busy at home. De-cluttering is an art and I'm good at it, LOL!! Oh, the RD from my last trail race mailed me the race hoodie I left behind!! WOW!! That was so nice of her. I really earned that nice looking race hoodie, LOL!!

Tues: 7.3 on trails near home.

Wed. REST

Thurs: REST again. RAIN most of the day, and windy.

Fri: 4.5 on different trails. It started to sprinkle and clouds moving in fast. Towards the end, ran into a running friend. She's training for an ultra in UT. We caught up on our news in her car while the rain poured. DH called me that he was home early and wanted to have dinner out. Good thing I had some dry clothes. Most places were packed with graduation dinners, too much traffic. DH just HAD to pick this day to eat out, HA!!

Sat (today): should have ran this morning with the group but I overslept!! And I got lazy. But then it rained again but it let up. I might go for a run near home or maybe a longer run tomorrow. Calves are pretty achy, don't know why! I'm glad we are staying home this weekend. I'm still tired from last weekend. Oh, I love my new running watch!! Still playing with it, not using much of the widgets but I'm sure I'll use some the more I get comfortable with it.

Hi ladies, dare I say I pulled an Erica? It’s only the 14th, duh me, how is it May 14th already?!

JC- what an adventure! It’s great you didn’t leave that F runner, though that M runner, what an ass! Downhill is so hard on your body, I hope your knee is back to normal. How do you like the watch so far?

Erica- So Ethan is decompressing? It annoys me when I’m home and the kids sleep all day, I usually wake them up by 11-ish. Was the skirt you wore for the 5k old? Wondering why it was falling down, at least no wardrobe malfunction! Lol

Nancy- glad the inspectors are gone and it went well. Now you can breathe and relax!

I have been kind of slacking on my runs, but getting into trail runs with the dog. I have been lifting weights the past few weeks or so, mostly for vanity but also to help my core and overall strength. I feel like I’ve been a blob for May. I am eyeing a trail race in June, but am hesitant as it’s an organization that’s not back of the pack friendly, but there are 2 distances (5.5 mile and 3.3 miles) and I would do the shorter one. I have no idea what my time would be, my runs with the dog always have plenty of stop and sniff and/or roll in some nasty carcass or poo time. After reading about JC’s race I am a bit more nervous!
Picking up my daughter at school today, she stayed 2 extra days because her boyfriend is still there, kind of inconvenient for us, but trying to be understanding.
Son has his prom this Saturday, wow boys have it so easy! Went to order his tux last week, took 20 minutes with 2 people in front of him.
My 10k is Sunday, I was smart and paid to have my packet mailed so I don’t need to drive 1 1/2 hours 2 days in a row.

Have a great week!

Good morning!
Lisa, lol! Yes, I have been know to not realize it was the next month but I don’t think I’ve gone that long! Glad you’re enjoying trail running. I don’t think you should do your first trail race with a not so friendly back of the pack race. You don’t want your first trail race to be a bad experience. Seems weird that the race would be known for that. When Mark and I took a trail running class, the guy who taught it said “you will get lost, you will fall and get injured”. Ok, then, lol! Good luck with your 10K Sunday and yay that all your chickens will be home!

Nancy, glad the inspection went well and is over. Breathe. Thanks for thinking of me for my marathon. Although it didn’t go well, at least I finished!!

JC, I posted a race report to FB about my race so I’ll post it here for you. I’m guessing Lisa and Nancy have already seen it. It was ugly...the ugliest. Well, actually, the ugliest would have been another DNF and that did not happen so I guess it was a tad bit better than that.

I took my friend Ariel into Logan yesterday. I was supposed to have a massage but moved it to Thursday once I realized it conflicted with getting to the airport. I’m glad I did because I couldn’t have gone for a massage yesterday in my current state. My calf feels better but every once in a while, I tweak it hobbling around. Hopefully it will be ok later this week.

Busy week trying to catch up of everything; laundry, cleaning, hard work, etc.
ok, better get moving! Have a great week!
