Forums: Connect with Another Mother Runner

A huge, sweaty welcome to the another mother runner forums, an exclusive but inclusive—that makes sense, right?—place to connect, chat, ask, analyze, and dream big with other runners. The beauty of this running forum is that, unlike our Facebook page, the status updates don’t float by in less than a day. Here they are, accessible whenever you need the 411.

Anything is game here: questions about training, nutrition, sports bras, leaking on the run, whatever. Two categories we think are pretty cool: a match.com for mother runners, where you can find a BRF (best running friend) and free gear swap, a place to find a home for your newish gear you never use. (The recipient pays only for shipping; thank you in advance for respecting this rule.)

So whatever you've got—IT band problems; stroller questions; a picture-perfect race; shoe issues—lay it on the collective us. If you'd like to nominate a category we forgot, email us at runmother [at] gmail [dot] com. We're all here to push each other across the finish line again and again.

Happy Labor Day from rainy NJ.

Wow, JC! I cannot say enough how awesome and badass you are. What a race!

Slowly coming along, started PT last week and will have my 3rd injection tomorrow. The therapist did quite a hands on eval last week. We talked about my running, how my left hip has given me issues at times in the past with running. Per his eval my left leg is longer than my right, which could be contributing to my problems. Currently wearing a heel cup in my right shoe in an attempt to level my hips. I have PT tomorrow morning then the injection in the afternoon so I’ll see what he says.

Good luck to your kids/grandkids going back to school, and to you all with your runs!

Hi all!
JC, so impressed with your race! Sounds like you enjoyed the experience and so glad your back held up, especially on the way down!
Nancy, could you use a heel cup in your running shoes? Hope PT and the injection goes well. Ouch!
Lisa, do your kids go back to school this week? I took Ethan back last week and he started classes on the 29th. Emma starts tomorrow although it’s just freshman and seniors and only a half day. The seniors show the freshman the ropes. Classes don’t begin until everyone comes back on Wednesday. First soccer game is tomorrow though.
So, I’ve had a terrible weekend. I started feeling yucky about a week and a half ago but seemed to feel better the beginning of last week. Then things just went down hill mid week. By Friday, I was pretty sure I was getting a sinus infection and, in hindsight, should have called my doctor. I didn’t. So, instead of enjoying the long weekend, I was sick. Like, super sick! Went to a walk in hospital on Sunday and got some antibiotics. Last night, I just cried because I felt so awful! Haven’t been this sick in a very long time. Came home from Maine today and am finally beginning to feel a tiny bit better. I slept in the car. If I don’t turn the corner soon, I’ll go see my doctor tomorrow. Ugh. Felt badly for my husband. We were going to go to Portland yesterday but instead went to the hospital. Oh well. There will be other weekends. Haven’t run since my disastrous 5 miles on Friday. Huh, wonder why that was so tough??
Well, hope you all had a nice long weekend. Enjoy the week!

Nancy: I hope the heel cup helps. I think we all have one leg a smichit longer than the other. My MT always pulls on the shorter one after checking my hips. It sounds like you have an excellent therapist, one who listens and hears you. Ouch, those injections hurt?

Erica: OMG! Sending HUGE HUGS your way! I don't get sick often but when I do, that's how I feel too. I'm glad you took it easy and hope you don't have to see the doc. Just when you want to enjoy the weekend. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Hi Lisa!

Saturday: Finally got in a run, almost a week after Pikes Peak. Still dealing with some achiness of the Achilles but overall, I'm feeling fine. Finished 6.5 miles on the dirt road around the fairgrounds, some in the shade. It was cool but sunny ...... and HUMID!!

Been staying home mostly, getting the house organized, unpacked the rest of the stuff and making sure DH knows where to put things back, LOL!! We will be driving back to AZ on Thurs. DH will be returning to MN in 2 or 3 wks to get his 'part time' work on paper and he hopes to be back at work. We'll see I need to return to focus on my training runs once we are back in AZ.

Sept 28 - Mt Taylor 50K in NM.

Oct 12 - Solstice Mt HM trail race in AZ.

Oct 26 - I'm thinking of running the Naatsis'aan 50K in AZ - not registered yet.

Nov. 2 - Or if I don't run the above 50K, I might run Deadman Peaks (NM),18 miler or 27 miler.

Nov 2 - But the Moab (UT) Marathon is also on the same day! http://moabtrailmarathon.com/info.html I ran the HM a couple of years ago. I finished despite a 'kinda' sprained ankle around 2 miles because another runner got in front of me. I know I mentioned that here.

So many races, so little time, LOL!!

Was going to run today but it's cold and rainy and windy and muggy!

You all take care! If you don't hear from me, I'll be on the road and will post when I return to AZ.

Hello ladies!
Where is everyone?

We returned from MN on Sunday. We left Thurs, stayed in SD with DH's aunt. She's the best and the only one we really like to hang out with, LOL! Friday, we stayed in hotel in northern CO. Was getting dark and it was WINDY so I 'embraced' the dreadmill for a good 7 miles, with some intervals while DH washed the car. Full of bugs on the windshield and front. Had the exercise room all to myself so I watched whatever I wanted to past the time, HA! Saturday, we made it to Santa Fe, NM. Stayed with a great friend and his wife. We went out to dinner and did some dancing! Been awhile since we spent some time with them. We had breakfast in Albq, NM where I got my NM red/green chile fix, LOL!! Visited another friend and her family in western NM before we got home. Always wonderful to sleep in your own bed.

So, I haven't run since Friday night. The two hour difference can really make a difference in getting up early for a run. Anyway, I have my running gear and will get in a run after this. Nice and cool but it's pretty breezy. Might rain.

DH is spending alot of time with yardwork, redoing the garage and shed trim, and the adobe wall around our courtyard. He will be driving and hauling his '57 Buick back to MN next week! He just HAS to have his toys close by, LOL!!

I'm looking forward to my hike with my SIL this Fri-Sunday in the Grand Canyon.

Take care ladies!

Hello and Happy Friday!
JC, I am so amazed and impressed by your race schedule. Very true...so many races, so little time, lol! Hope you had a nice hike in the Grand Canyon!

Nancy, how are you? How’s PT going? Do you feel like the injections are helping? Can you wear the heel cup in your running shoes?

Lisa, how are you? Are you doing any PT? Are you back to running or too soon?

So, I’ve had another tough week. Sigh. Started feeling better on Monday but woke up early Tuesday morning with diarrhea and stomach cramps. Felt off the whole day. Can’t catch a break. Wednesday, felt a bit better. That night, my sister called to tell me her mother in law passed away that day of a heart attack. She was only 76 and we shared a birthday. My sister has been with her husband since they were freshman in college so our families are close. So shocked...although she has a history of heart problems but it was so out of the blue. She looked great when I saw her last month at my mom’s 80th birthday party. Wake and funeral are Monday.

Haven’t run since Sunday. I did paint the living room this week and worked up quite a sweat. My glutes were sore from squatting and going up and down the step stool. That’s how out of shape I am! I’m going to attempt a run with my husband tomorrow morning though. Hopefully it will go ok.

I started changing my diet this week out of total and complete frustration. I’ve been tracking my calories and exercise since end of May and managed to gain 2 pounds in the process. I didn’t even lose any weight while I was sick over the last 2 1/2 weeks! My brother and best friend have had good luck with the keto diet so I’m contemplating something similar. When I saw a nutritionist a few years ago and was running a ton (training for my 39.3 challenge), she tested my metabolism (it’s very low, duh!), and wanted me at 50% carbs. Now that I’m not running much, I’ve decided I certainly don’t need that many carbs. So, while I’m not doing keto completely, I switched to 25% carbs since Tuesday and am down 2 pounds. I’ll decide if that’s going work to work for me or if I need to go for less and get into ketosis.

Ok, off to watch Emma’s soccer game. Senior year! Last chances.
Have a great weekend!

Good morning all!

JC I hope you are having a great time in the Grand Canyon. That's gotta be awesome. Keeping yourself busy with your race schedule. That Moab one looks very cool. The scenery... ahhh…

Sorry you haven't been feeling well, Erica. Good luck with the diet changes. You will definitely lose weight initially due to water changes. It is a balancing act how low vs. how you feel. Remember years ago when I had lowered my carbs, I had absolutely no energy. Senior year for Emma crazy how time flies. Any college decisions yet?

Lisa, I hope things are well with you!

I'm plugging along. Have been out of work for 8 weeks, have had 3injections into my spine, and have been in PT for 3 weeks now. No longer on bed rest, I can sit up at my desk, in chair etc. I set a timer for 30minutes so I get up and move around, do some stretches as per PT. I am now walking very slowly without any crutches, though I am to use one for long distances, and/or when I am tired. When the PT told me yesterday to walk without a crutch, I was scared. It was and still is both terrifying and exhilarating at the same time. Saw my MD yesterday, she is pleased with how I am progressing and does not anticipate I will need surgery. My left knee and calf remain numb, we are uncertain if that will go away entirely, only time will tell.

Enjoy the weekend!

Nancy, you must be going stir crazy! What are you doing to keep sane? Glad you are no longer on bed rest. That must help. Seems like you are making progress so that’s good. Thinking of you. Hugs.

Keto actually makes you thirsty so you drink a lot of water. I grew up during the low fat craze, as I think we all did. Everything was low fat! I remember seeing a nutritionist years ago when I went to the first AMR retreat in Little Rock and when I went over my food with her, she kept saying, where’s the fat?. When I got back, I upped my fat (mostly with eggs and avocado) and dropped a few pounds. Any kind of extreme diet always makes me leery but I’m willing to try this one since it worked well for my brother but I’m not going to take it to the extreme. I’ll go with the 80/20 rule and allow myself to enjoy foods I love when I want to. Not sure I’d do it if I were running a lot though.

Erica: So sorry to hear of your sister's MIL. Glad you are close to family to be a comfort to your sister's family. Hope the Keto diet accomplishes what you want. I'm leery of ANY diet so I don't try any diets at all. I keep track of what I eat daily. I'm sure if I talked with a nutritionist, he/she would put out what I need to change but I read alot about foods, fads, etc. I feel I have a good sense of what my body needs. The main thing for me is staying with 'my rule' of not eating after 7 pm. My 'fast' usually lasts at least 12 hrs and that seems to help me keep in shape. I'm not much for sweets (like my DH)......till it comes to my red wine. haha!! However, I don't drink for at least 1-2 weeks before races. That should account for something, right?! LOL!!

Nancy: There's some good news in that you can move around but I can't imagine how you are dealing with all this ..... when you are alone. Are you getting any help at home? I would move in if I lived closer. Big HUGS!! Hang in there, dear friend.

How's Lisa doing?

I decided and registered for the Oct 26 50K in southern UT ......and I'm thinking of a 25K near Phoenix on Nov 16. Then I will be meeting DH in Denver Dec. 7th weekend. He will be flying there from MN while I drive (my car) to Denver and we will drive back to MN for the holidays.
I hope to return to AZ in January.

Need some input from my RBs:

I would like to run my first 50 miler near Tucson ........ March 7, 2020 to celebrate my turning 60. About 5 hrs drive one way, will probably camp, and have to pay for registration fee (135!!)........ https://oldpueblo50.com/
Or should I wait the following month, April 18, 2020 to run the 60K? This is closer to where I live, I can stay with a friend and I may have enough credits (from volunteering) to pay for the entry fee. https://www.aravaiparunning.com/whiskey-basin/

If I run the April race, I could probably stay a little longer with DH in MN. Thought I throw that in there, LOL!!

I will post the Grand Canyon hike report separately ........it's kinda long.
