Forums: Connect with Another Mother Runner

A huge, sweaty welcome to the another mother runner forums, an exclusive but inclusive—that makes sense, right?—place to connect, chat, ask, analyze, and dream big with other runners. The beauty of this running forum is that, unlike our Facebook page, the status updates don’t float by in less than a day. Here they are, accessible whenever you need the 411.

Anything is game here: questions about training, nutrition, sports bras, leaking on the run, whatever. Two categories we think are pretty cool: a match.com for mother runners, where you can find a BRF (best running friend) and free gear swap, a place to find a home for your newish gear you never use. (The recipient pays only for shipping; thank you in advance for respecting this rule.)

So whatever you've got—IT band problems; stroller questions; a picture-perfect race; shoe issues—lay it on the collective us. If you'd like to nominate a category we forgot, email us at runmother [at] gmail [dot] com. We're all here to push each other across the finish line again and again.

Happy NYC Marathon weekend!

Looks like it will be perfect weather for them. We watched part of the parade of nations (?) yesterday, they were broadcasting it on our ABC news. Didn't; know they did such a thing.

Survived two days back to work. Physically, the knee is a little sore but mentally I am fried.

I need to go back to read October posts.

Have a good weekend.

Hello and Happy November! My favorite month!

JC, I’m so sorry about your friend’s passing. I hope that you have lots of fond memories to help you get through. Congratulations on your ultra! Hope your ankle is ok! You are so determined! Great race report! Very impressed you made it to the finish line. I hope you are recovering well. Eat all the food! Your body needs it!

Nancy, glad you made it through your first couple of days back at work. Go easy next week! It’s going to take more out of you to make it through the 5 days.

Lisa, hope you are well.

Went for a 5 mile run today and felt great! Did the first 4 with my husband. We signed up for a 5 mile trail race on November 16th so we ran to a dirt road near us to get a feel for the how it will be on race day. The race is called the Wolf Hollow trail race and its on fairly wide and groomed dirt trails with just a little bit of single track. I’ve always wanted to run a trail race so this should be good. Nothing too technical and only 5 miles. They offer a 10 miler bit it’s just 2 loops of the same trail and I haven’t been running that kind of distances. I actually ran 60 miles in October, longest monthly mileage since April which was 131 miles! I signed up for a New Year’s Day 10k but Mark didn’t want to do it. One of my friends is doing the 5k so I’m fine going alone.

Emma’s soccer team won their preliminary playoff game (after OT and PKs) on Thursday so they have a quarterfinal game tomorrow. Fun to watch her play but this could be her last game.

Ethan texted me out of the blue today to tell me about an apartment he’s interested in renting next year with friends. Man, they grow up so fast

Ok, off to bed. Hoping to get in a short run tomorrow in between watching the NYC marathon on tv. I’ll write more later. Lots of other stuff going on. All good! Happy November!!

Hi Ladies, I am trying the old copy and paste, hopefully it works!

JC- I hope your ankle is doing better. I am very sorry for your loss.
Nancy- Congratulations to Fred! Miserable conditions, that’s a lot of steps for you. How are you doing with going back to work?
Erica- How are Stanley and Kevin (?), can’t remember the names- sorry! Good luck with the trail race! I will say I am hesitant after my ankle..
I can’t remember when I last posted substantially, so forgive me if I repeat myself! My ankle bone is healed, I need to be careful of the tendons and ligaments, and need to wear a brace or hiking boot in the woods, otherwise I was cleared to get back to running. I started super conservatively, running in 10 second increments, and only running every other day. Per the ortho if I feel up to it I can run the Millinocket half on 12/7. I am up run/walking as a long run of 5 ½ miles, this past Saturday, and have also registered for a Thanksgiving 5k. Now I am at a 1:1 walking/running ratio.
In August I had a little meltdown over my weight, and started a nutrition service with a coach. So far I have lost 17.2 (yes, .2) pounds! Lol. My plan ends this coming weekend, but what a great feeling to not have that extra weight to carry around. I hope to at least maintain, if not lose some more. The basic premise is carb-cycling, with an emphasis on eating all the macronutrients each time you eat, and eating every 2-3 hours so you are never really starving.
We were actually 2 blocks from the NYC marathon yesterday, at hopefully our last college tour for Patrick. It was pure torture to hear the sirens for the elite runners in the middle of the tour! It was beautiful, but chilly weather, perfect for running a marathon.
I’m sure I am forgetting a lot, hopefully it will come to me.
Happy November!

JC I am very sorry about your friend (probably more like a sister to you) passing. It's hard... thankfully you have good memories to lean on. My best to her family.

Wow, what a run you had! I cracked up at your line "only 13 miles to go"... for sure that's a badass comment. I hope your body is recovering, try to take it easy. Sounds like a beautiful run, they all do that your post about, the scenery. I'd be stopping to take photos all the time and never get done with the run 😉

Fun times but bittersweet, Erica. Saw your Emma pics on FB. And Ethan looking for an apartment rather than a dorm, yes, crazy how they grow up but we aren't aging any 😉 the trail run should be fun for you, tell Stanley and Kevin to cooperate. Are you going to PT?

Lisa, good to hear from you. You are doing great and congrats on the weight loss! What colleges is Patrick interested in?

Off today, going into NYC with Ana to look at wedding gowns (did I tell you all Freddy finally proposed? They are getting married on Halloween next year, that is her favorite holiday). Anyway, going to Kleinfelds (Say Yes to the Dress) should be fun, I haven't looked at wedding gowns in a very long time. And nice not to be in work. It's coming along, still mentally draining. I had PT last night, insurance cut me but he is going to send in another report and appeal it. If not, I may stay on privately and go once a week or every other week to help me get back to running again. I am up to walking 1.1 miles, yay!, tiring, but doing it 3x/week and home PT 5-6x/week. I take Sundays off.

Ok, gotta go. Have a great week!

Monday- 50 minute tempo run on the treadmill at 5 AM
Tuesday- strength circuit from the AMT Many Happy Miles program, and 25 minutes on my rower.
Wednesday-45 minutes easy run with 2 pickups every 10 minutes.
This morning- 50 minute circuit on the elliptical and 10 minutes of leg weights.

Nancy- I hope you had fun in the city! Congratulations on the proposal and engagement! My PT told me it was a little game they would play: approve me for X amount of sessions, she would request more, then they would approve X more. I hope that happens for you. Yay for walking 1.1 miles! Patrick is looking at Pratt, PACE and Marymount Manhattan in the city, and Hofstra on Long Island.

So, possibly exciting news, not 100% sure, BUT, I *might* get a charity bib for a little marathon in Massachusetts in April... EEEKKK!

Have a good day!

Lisa: Nice workout sessions! Having a goal really helps I think. Fingers crossed that you get the bib for MA marathon. Awesome news on the weight loss. Sounds like you are feeling better, yay!
Nancy: congrats to Ana on her engagement to Freddy. Shopping for wedding dress? Wow! Halloween is my DH's favorite holiday too. What a fun 'day' to celebrate anniversaries! It's wonderful news about your progress, hope the PT sessions gets continued approval. You'll be toeing the starting lines soon again! The scenery of my last ultra was absolutely incredible for sure! Despite my struggle, I always made sure that I stop and take it all in, and offer gratitude.
Erica: I need to maintain some control of my eating to maintain my running weight. And the holidays are around the corner, LOL!! My niece attends U of AZ and is sharing an apartment with a friend. She loves it but I always remind her to stay aware of her surroundings, coming and going. Gosh, your kids are growing up so fast! Have you thought of what you want to do when they all leave home? You travel to Europe but will you want to run races in other states? Good luck on the upcoming trail race, you'll do great!!

Thank you ladies for your kind words. It's still tough and I'm still so very sad. I think about her all the time and often find myself 'talking' to her.
I drove to western AZ and visited the DH of my friend who passed away. It was more of a crying and hugging session for hours. No funeral. The celebration of her life will be next June, scattering of ashes will be in various places she loved. She didn't want anyone traveling in the winter and summer is a time for renewal. She was always so kind and thoughtful of others. And in her work, she has met and befriended so many. I can't look at the photos without bursting into tears but I'm treasuring the moments we had, safeguarding them in the corner of my heart.

I've only been walking and hiking these few days. My spirit and soul craves the solitude and I offer gratitude for the precious friendship of my dear friend. I'm very blessed to call each of you my sole friends.
Stay safe and warm.

Hi all!
First, JC, sending you extra hugs while you grieve your dear friend. I still get teary thinking of my dear friend Henry who passed away over a year ago. I saw a cardinal Wednesday morning and burst into tears. Henry didn’t want a funeral but a big party and we certainly did that! It was like planning a wedding. Everyone has been traveling and spreading his ashes all over the world. He loved to travel. It takes time. It’s a process, for sure!
Nancy, I can’t believe I have not been to NYC in over 30 years and yet we were both there at the same time!!!! I took the bus into the city Wednesday, saw a matinee (Hadestown was excellent!), shopped, had dinner, spent the night, and came back home yesterday afternoon. Did Ana find a dress? If we ever renew our vows, it’s my dream to Say Yes To The Dress at Kleinfeld. Fun! I’ve had the same issue with insurance. PT will fight for more treatment.
Lisa, so excited for your Boston charity bib!! Since you will be training for that, are you going to skip Millenocket (sp?)? Has Patrick applied anywhere yet? What does he want to study? We will both be empty nesters next fall.
I ran Monday and Tuesday and walked all over NYC Wednesday and Thursday. Stanley and Kevin are a bit sore but I’m going to try and get out today for a run. Windchill is in the teens though! It’s Emma’s birthday so lots of festivities this weekend.
Ok, got to get moving on all my neglected chores! Have a great weekend!

Hello ladies.

I've been going through each room at my house including the garage and filling up containers to take to goodwill or throw out. Don't have much but I tend to get bored with the same stuff so I figure other people can get more use out of them. DH gave the ok for his stuff too. LOL!!

I gave myself 2 weeks to recover, to NOT run, just walking and hiking.

Sun: was planning around 4-5 miles but ended up with 7.2 miles on the trails near home. Legs felt rested and ready to keep going. Nice sunny and cool day to be out in the woods.

Mon: free admission to any National Park. So I drove to my 'backyard' the Grand Canyon. Parked and rode shuttle to Hermit Rest trailhead on the west end of the Park. Hiked for an hour and turned around. Was surprised to meet alot of hikers on their way up from backpacking/camping at the bottom. It's about 9 miles one way from the trail head to the river. I went for almost 1.5 miles. Very rocky in many areas and steep but some portions level out and the scenic views are amazing. Talked with hikers from WI, Maine, CO, and OH. They were NOT looking forward to going 'home' in the middle of the artic blast, brrrrr! Usually there is snow and colder temps at the GC during this time but we are very lucky to still to have sunny days for hiking.

Tues: 4 miles on a different trail near home. Quads were kinda sore from the steep hiking at GC yesterday. Thought the short run might help.

Today: 6 miles on a trail closer to town, near base of mountain. Lots of walkers. There is a prescribed burn west of here. Glad the smoke is not towards my home.

Enjoy your day ladies! Stay safe and warm! Brrrrr, you all are in the artic blasts that seems to be moving through each week. Safe travels if you are on the road.

Yes it is cold here today. And the wind yesterday made it worse. Supposed to warm up to maybe 50 by Friday 🙂 at least we didn't get any snow yesterday, just had rain and it stopped before the temp dropped.

PT was approved for 4 more sessions so I will go once a week. He also told me I can up my distance by 20% rather than 10%, so Saturday I will walk 1.5 miles 🙂 Feel ok, I get pin-pricks in various spots in the leg which he said is the nerve healing itself so that is good news. I've not been as good doing my home PT as I was, need to work on that. My job is ok, I'm getting back into the routine so it's not as mentally draining.

Small world Erica! Ana did find "the" dress but she is going to get it from a local store here in NJ, less money and much easier to deal with the fittings. Kleinfelds was very pretty but there was no filming going on (despite the posted sign) and no champagne. We did get bottled water 🙂

Congrats Lisa on the bib, so awesome!!!

JC, I am jealous your backyard national park is the Grand Canyon! Glad you are enjoying your hikes 🙂 happy cleaning - that's always on my to do list but Fred tends to be a packrat. I'm ready to throw everything out!
