Forums: Connect with Another Mother Runner

A huge, sweaty welcome to the another mother runner forums, an exclusive but inclusive—that makes sense, right?—place to connect, chat, ask, analyze, and dream big with other runners. The beauty of this running forum is that, unlike our Facebook page, the status updates don’t float by in less than a day. Here they are, accessible whenever you need the 411.

Anything is game here: questions about training, nutrition, sports bras, leaking on the run, whatever. Two categories we think are pretty cool: a match.com for mother runners, where you can find a BRF (best running friend) and free gear swap, a place to find a home for your newish gear you never use. (The recipient pays only for shipping; thank you in advance for respecting this rule.)

So whatever you've got—IT band problems; stroller questions; a picture-perfect race; shoe issues—lay it on the collective us. If you'd like to nominate a category we forgot, email us at runmother [at] gmail [dot] com. We're all here to push each other across the finish line again and again.

Happy December 2nd! Nearly to the end of the year, boy time flies. Hope you are all well. I walked 2 miles on Saturday, after 1 mile I did 3 short 30 second bursts of slow jogging. I was nervous but haven't felt any negative repercussions from doing that so I am taking it as a good sign. Decorated the house this weekend, Fred and Katie put up the lights outside; he brought up the boxes then Katie and I decorated inside. We have 3 artificial trees - the main one in the living room is all our family ornaments through the years; a smaller one in the dining room is Snoopy/Peanuts ornaments and the smaller one in the den is Star Trek. I feel festive 🙂

Bought a few things on Amazon for Black Friday otherwise not much shopping done. Apparently this is the year of gift cards or cash, with the wedding coming up next year.

Have a great day!

Happy Snow Day!
We got about a foot of snow last night with another 5-8 inches coming tonight. No school for Emma today and Mark is working from home. Well, he’s actually snow blowing the driveway as I type. Got Ethan out of the house earlier than planned yesterday morning so he could make it back to school before the storm arrived. He got back at 2pm just as the snow started. Said they got about 18 inches so far! Classes were canceled.

After Ethan left, Emma and I did our long run. We ran/walked an 8 miler. Decided to start having her experiment with fueling. Was kind of funny. Took her forever to choke down a salted caramel GU. She was gagging from the texture. I think she’ll prefer chocolate outrage GU since it’s more like chocolate frosting. She also bought some honey stinger chews to try. Otherwise, no issues. I carried a handheld water bottle to share. We ran each mile, then walked briefly. Average pace was just under 11 minutes per mile with our walk breaks. She’s doing so well!! Proud of my girl!

I decided to try my new custom orthotics and also new shoes for the long run. Not the brightest idea but it mostly worked out great! I went back to the New Balance 1080’s since I really need a wide shoe for long runs but the version 10 has been completely redesigned. I’d read mixed reviews. I had trouble with the top of my right shoe and stopped after a couple of miles to loosen the laces and adjust my sock. I had a red mark on that spot when I finished. Might just need to redo the lacing. The custom orthotic was great. I used them each day for many hour and even though the doctor said it might take a few weeks to break them in, it didn’t for me. He said some people can wear them all day right out of the gate. Stanley and Kevin are happier. Yay! I wore them Monday and Tuesday and Tuesday night, no pain when I went to bed. Hoping it continues as I increase my mileage. This was only the second time I’ve run 8 miles since my marathon in May.

Did a little bit of cyber Monday shopping this morning but mostly for stuff that I’d been waiting to purchase to see if they’d be on sale today. Used some coupons and rewards for a couple of purchases and bought some Christmas presents for Ethan. Otherwise, nothing too exciting. We’re really trying to cut back on the “stuff”.

Taking today and tomorrow off from running but may snow shoe. It’s snowing again so round 2 has begun! Stay safe and warm ladies!

Hello ladies! It's me 🙂 Sorry for being MIA for a few days.
We made it to MN home on Tuesday evening.
DH and his dad drove the truck and I drove my car.
It was white-knuckled driving through NE and SD, scary!!
As it gets dark, temp drops and roads get icy/slick .......and you can't see the deer crossings. YIKES!!
We made it to DH's aunt's home Sunday night. I was very frazzeled. The couple of glasses of wine really helped, LOL!!
We stayed and visited till Tuesday.
I did run 6 miles on her TM Monday afternoon, YAY!!

We got to Fargo to visit another DH's uncle and aunt. I left early so I don't have to drive in the dark. Roads are clear....... except for the driveway into our neighborhood, haha!!
Got to my driveway ....... and it's blocked by about 4 ft of SNOW!!
Parked at my neighbor's and we visited for awhile. I walked to my house. DH and FIL arrived about an hour later. DH got the snowblower and cleared the driveway to get my car into the garage. It was midnight when we went to bed.

Minimal decorating at the MN house. Most of the decorations are at the AZ house. That's ok, less 'stuff' (Erica, LOL!!). We do have a 4 ft tree from last year but only the bottom half lit up. So we had to buy extra 'twinkling' lights and had some brand new ornaments that discovered in a box, YAY!!

RB from twin cities arrived last night. We had pizza while we caught up on our past adventures and for the future. It's sooooo good to see her and her dog, Grace.
RB left for her long run of 20-22 miles around 6:30!! About 22 degrees, feels like 15!! She's one tough cookie!!
I tracked her on RoadID and met her (with Grace) around mile 14. She took Grace by the leash (she loves to run). I parked and ran towards them, then we ran together.
RB finished 20.8 miles!!
I finished a long 6.1 miles, HAHA!!
I was proud of myself for dragging my butt out of bed and getting 'acclimated' to MN weather.
It was actually nice, the crisp cold air ...... until the wind picks up.
The paved trail around the lake was pretty clear with occasional patches of snow/ice.
We both only wore our trail shoes.

RB is visiting her son now. We will be meeting another friend for dinner this evening.
This is the friend who joined us for the Grand Canyon hike in March 2017.
RB and this friend are both nurses so they have alot in common. This nurse also worked with DH in the O.R. at the local hospital. And the three of us took ball room dancing.
This will be a fun evening! :()

So RB will be getting in a 10 miler tomorrow for recovery run.
I'll try for another 6, haha!!

I'm going to check the prices for a monthly fee at the university gym. They do have a punch card as well.

Nancy: YAY!! one step at a time, right? So happy for you. Getting some holiday decorations kept you on your toes too. Wow, 3 trees! My SIL does the same thing with her 'forest.'

Erica: YIPPEE!! Stanley and Kevin are done! So proud of Emma too! Yep, I know the feeling of 'choking down' GUs. I don't eat that anymore, about 4 yrs now. Hope she finds one she likes. I think you are right on about adjust the laces. I do that with all my shoes. It's suppose to get colder here next week............really? Whatever....... cold is cold in MN!

Lisa: virtual wave to you!! YOU are rocking the training!! I thought about you when I started to think of getting back into 'training' mode and getting back to my race weight.

I registered for a trail marathon in May 2020 in NM. Use to be a road marathon but it got changed to a trail, YAY!! I'm thinking of getting some endurance runs in while in MN. Then when I'm back in AZ, will add hills. Not sure when I'll be heading back to AZ. Late Feb or early March.
Take care ladies!!

Hi all!
Another snow day today so I have a moment to catch up. It’s been a busy week or so!

JC, nice job getting out and acclimated to MN weather. Helps to run with a friend, for sure! Stanley and Kevin are still there but they’re less angry...sometimes. Yesterday and today they’ve been complaining but I’ve been home and wearing slippers around the house. I really need to wear my orthotics. Just not as cozy.

Nancy, boy have you and Fred been busy baking cookies! I have to bake a couple dozen cookies for a swap at bunco tomorrow night and I’m stressing, lol! Kidding but sometimes I burn a few. I’m not the best in the kitchen but I try.

Lisa, race report from Millenockett? Pretty sure that’s not how it’s spelled but you know what I mean. When does Meghan get home from college? Ethan’s coming home Friday morning. Finals today, tomorrow, and Thursday. Has Patrick applied to any colleges yet? Heard back?

Running has been going well. We had a cutback week and then went back up this week. Emma tried some fruity shot blocks that my running friend gave her and she liked those much better. We had a 6 miler planned for today but will do it tomorrow instead due to snow. We’ve run in the snow before but it’s slick out today and I’m more concerned with crazy drivers. Plus, Emma has a cold so another rest day will be good for her.

She applied to 2 colleges so far and got into both. One more application will go out soon and then she’ll decide. She’ll probably go to the admitted students days for 2 of the 3 and then make her choice. Happy she has a place to go! Very proud of her!!

Went out to dinner last Thursday to celebrate what would have been my friend Henry’s 65th birthday. We toasted him, chatted about things he used to say, and celebrated for him. We miss him! Went to 2 holiday parties this past weekend. Lots of yummy food, laughter, and catching up with friends. It was fun! Wrapped presents yesterday. Didn’t have much to wrap so that was good. Now I need to focus on lists for what I need to cook for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. All good!

Ok, vacuuming time! Have a great week!

Hi everyone! a quick hello... busy time of year with work and Christmas prep. Lots of cookies made - 4,826 to be exact - this past weekend. In between wrote cards, wrapped gifts. Still have stocking stuffers to pick up, that will be this weekend. Week from today is Christmas Eve, then NY Eve and on to 2020!

Congratulations to your Emma for her college acceptances! Such an exciting time 🙂 Glad Ethan is doing well, too. And your running together is awesome! That will be such a fun race for you two.

Hope all is well with you, JC. Nice to catch up with your running friend. Hoping you are getting in good training at the gym. I have been a slug, not good. Gotta get back on track.

Nancy: OMG!! Seriously?!? That is ALOT of cookies..... WOW!! You are one busy cookie, LOL! I have not baked cookies since Niece left to live back with her mom......about 10 yrs ago. But like I have said, DH and I are not sentimental about the holidays. The less we do, the better. I do look forward to New Year's day. We will be celebrating our anniversary ...... and our second GD's birthday. She will be 7 yrs old, WOOHOO!!

Erica: holy moly!! you are one busy elf!! Bummer that DD is not feeling well but it sounds like you both are very committed on consistent running. That's such an accomplishment in itself. I just love you and DD are training for a race. That will not happen with my DD..... or my DS. What happened?? LOL!! I'm glad Emma got into the colleges. Which ones? and which is her first choice?

Lisa: you keeping warm? You really helped in resetting my goal to get back to my racing weight. Hope you are doing well.

So I got a month membership at the local state university gym, YAY!! I was still in their system and got a discount, WOOHOO!! So I will definitely take advantage of it. Started Saturday when I became a member.
Got in a really good workout and finished 6.2 miles. I like the elliptical so I get that in at the beginning and/or the end. Then since I can barely make it more than 2 miles on the TM, I alternate running on the short track. 7 laps = 1 mile. I use the TM for speed and inclines which I set between 3-6%. On the short track, I get in some lunges, butt kicks, etc on the straightway. Helps me to deal with the boring flat surface.
So I did that Sat and Mon. finishing 6.2 miles each day with some weights and stretching.
Today: Started with 15 min elliptical. Ran 2 miles on short track. Then I recognized a gentleman who I use to walk with ........from 3 yrs ago......before moving back to AZ. He was so happy to see me! I walked with him for about a mile. After he left, I ran 2 miles on the TM, then another mile on the track. Easy day today. Was good.

Suppose to be get 'warmer'......in the teens this week. I hope to run outside if/when temp hits the 20s. I'm still hoping to run a showshoe race ..............

Stay warm and safe ladies!

Hi ladies!! Only a few more days till Christmas!! DH and I are just enjoying each other's company. We will be driving to his aunt's home in Aberdeen, SD on Tuesday to spend Christmas (and couple of extra days) with her. Aunt's DD and 7 year old son from Colorado hope to make it to SD as well but son's father is being an A$$ about it. He lives in CO, have joint custody. What a pain. My own DD is caught up in this type of situation as well, in AZ. His aunt is very nice. It's always a treat to visit her. She hopes we get 'stuck' in SD and celebrate the New Year with her, LOL!! She lives alone and doesn't get many visitors ......or those she likes, haha!

Wed: This was the day I met up with the gentleman from 3 yrs ago, walked about a mile with him. But I finished 5 miles on track/TM alternating.

Thurs: Another day at the gym. This time, I wasn't feeling so energetic so it was an easy day. Finished 2 miles on track with some running exercises, a mile on the TM at random hills setting of 3-7% incline but at slower pace, then finished another mile on track. So finished 4.1 miles. Only 15 minutes on weights. About 20 minutes stretching and just laying down on the mat because I felt like it, LOL!!

Fri: REST. I had appt for a woman's physical. And got my first dose of the shingles shot, ouch! Second dose in Jan. I had my flu shot in Nov when I was still in AZ. The weather definitely feels 'warmer' with temps in the 20s ..... no sun though, blah!

Today: My left arm is incredibly SORE .....from the shingrix shot, my goodness! And I woke up feeling blah, and very achy all over. Temps are in the 30s, partly cloudy. Perfect day for a winter run in the artic north, and thinking maybe a little bit of crisp cold fresh air might do me some good. Not sure how far I would run, just go by feel.
So I start to run but after 1/2 mile, I felt awful, so I slowed down, then decided to walk/run. It was a drag out LONG easy 3 miles around the neighborhood. Stupid. Didn't feel all that great but had to take advantage of the 'warm' day. Avoiding slush and icy patches ...... while neighbors waved or gave me the thumbs up!
Glad I didn't drive to the gym. I probably would have just laid down on the mat......

Today: suppose to be warm again, in the 30s. I'm sitting here ...... procrastinating ...... to try another run outside? I'm feeling so much better. Less achy. Injection site is still sore. I'm being lazy now.

Tomorrow (Monday): I hope to get a run in and workout at gym because the gym is closed on Tuesday, and we are leaving for SD. The aunt has an elliptical and a TM so I have no excuse to not get a run in........uh huh.

Take care ladies! Wishing you and yours a very merry, joyful and warm holiday. Safe travels!

Hope each of you and yours had a joyous Christmas!! DH and I were the first to arrive at his aunt's home in SD. Before anyone else arrived, I ran on TM for about 5 miles, with a mile at 7% incline, whew!! 10 min ellip and lots of stretching. That was it ...... I'm hoping to get a workout and run in at university gym tomorrow IF weather permits.

I wanted to run outside but it was already getting dark and very icy roads around the neighborhood. The aunt's DD and 7 yr old son from Boulder, CO made it on the 24th after all. DH's dad drove in after we all sat down for dinner. 5 dogs completed the family, LOL!! Christmas was wonderful, lots of fun and laughter in winter wonderland, cold but no wind, yay!! The 'kids', DH and 7 yr old, 'shot' each other with laser guns for most of the afternoon, lots of energy!! Aunt and I went for an hour's walk after dinner each night, nice!! Snowstorm predicted starting tonight into the weekend. DH and I returned home about 6 pm tonight and we may get a bit of the storm as well. Everyone is hunkering down! yikes!!

Just wanted to say "hey!"

Stay safe and warm ladies!!

Snowed on and off all day. 🙂 Temps were nice tho, in the high 20s, little wind, cloudy. Tempting to run outside, around the neighborhood but it was pretty icy and slick. Too risky so I decided to drive to the gym.

Started with 10 min elliptical. Dynamic stretching. 2 miles on the short track with exercises on the straightaway every other lap. Took me almost a mile to 'warm' up the joints and muscles. Then 2 miles on the TM. Mostly intervals on 3-7% inclines. A mile on the track again. The 6th mile was tough on the TM. About 15 min in the weights. Finished with 15 min stretching. Not too many people in the gym.

The predicted storm wasn't as bad but there is still tomorrow. Depending on the weather, I may go to the gym again tomorrow. However, there is a snowshoe 'hike' at the state park. I might check it out. There are 2 snowshoe hikes at different state parks on New Year's Day. Sounds exciting!

Oh, this would be once in a lifetime race, yikes!! 😯 In the 'icebox' of America! Brrrrr! I'm thinking about it.......
