Forums: Connect with Another Mother Runner

A huge, sweaty welcome to the another mother runner forums, an exclusive but inclusive—that makes sense, right?—place to connect, chat, ask, analyze, and dream big with other runners. The beauty of this running forum is that, unlike our Facebook page, the status updates don’t float by in less than a day. Here they are, accessible whenever you need the 411.

Anything is game here: questions about training, nutrition, sports bras, leaking on the run, whatever. Two categories we think are pretty cool: a match.com for mother runners, where you can find a BRF (best running friend) and free gear swap, a place to find a home for your newish gear you never use. (The recipient pays only for shipping; thank you in advance for respecting this rule.)

So whatever you've got—IT band problems; stroller questions; a picture-perfect race; shoe issues—lay it on the collective us. If you'd like to nominate a category we forgot, email us at runmother [at] gmail [dot] com. We're all here to push each other across the finish line again and again.

Erica: well, yesterday (Sat) was too darn cold to go anywhere so it was REST day. Didn't want to leave the house..... and didn't. Made some fudge brownies for DH..... he even bought the mix, LOL!! So glad I don't have his sweet tooth.

At least your kids and DH join you for an occasional run ....... neither of my kids are 'runners'.... definitely not DH, ha! DS and DIL have changed their lifestyle the last two years, each lost a ton of weight through healthier eating and working out, and even finished a 5K obstacle race.
That is the only time they did that. But they do some hiking now and then. I think they prefer weights and strength training. I'm so happy they are doing something. I wish DD would. I don't even breath a word of it. She's too sensitive and has a short temper. I'm hoping she and fiance' consider some healthy changes, they set their wedding date for June. They have a nice workout room at their complex.

I have been doing intermittent fasting for years. Try to not eat after 7 pm. Fast at least 12 hours. After a hard workout and/or long run, I do find that the hunger pains wake me up and I need to eat but I still wait 12 hrs. Just drink alot of water. It's really been helpful in keeping my weight down although the holidays screws it up but I try to stay conscious of my eating. I will not give up drinking my red wine and/or hard cider though, LOL! I tend to drink a lot more TEA in the winter months although I do love my de-caff coffee on certain mornings. You do NOT want to see me on caffeine, LOL!! But that's been for years so I don't care for or miss caffeine, I just love coffee. Rarely any creamer either.
My body does not like soy or coconut. I limit avocados and beets even tho I love them. They all make me bloated. yucky feeling.

Nancy: lucky you, a cruise!! That should offer a break from the weather. Just enjoy yourself. No guilt trips. This will definitely give your body some time off and just pamper yourself. Keep up the easy workouts, you'll do fine.
Yep, always on the lookout for every twinge and sounds, Isn't that the truth?!? Ha. That's what I feel about my poor chronic knee. It's hanging in there. Hope you had a nice 60 degree Saturday! wow!! I don't think that's gonna happen here in MN till summer, haha!

Lisa: that is amazing!! You are a tough working machine, lady!! CONGRATS on the race! Your new bod definitely carried you through the race, overcoming some tough areas and you kept on pushing. You took off some incredible minutes, wow!! HIGH-FIVE!! You toughed it out to the end. And a miraculous endeavor considering the ankle break. You know that that is incredible, right? You showed up and finished, WTG!!
Hope the ankle quiets down. I'm sure it's getting use to being worked with again. You seem to taking it easy though. Smart.
I'm always so impressed with people who set a challenge like that. Even a mile walk or run adds up a lot. Good for you!
Congrats to DS too. Having many choices can make it even more difficult but I'm sure he'll choose the best one for him. Are the schools all kinda close to you?

Fri: short easy 3 mile around neighborhood. I procrastinated ...... omg!! But finally drag my butt out the door because Saturday is predicted to be ARTIC cold. A nice chilly run, temp around 20 but after 3 miles, my knee started complaining. Sometimes, that's good, LOL!! I was ready to go home.

Saturday: REST day. It was very very cold. Seriously, the high was 0 degree!! Like I mentioned, making fudge brownies was priority. DH kept asking me about when it'll be ready, LOL!!

Today: drove to gym. A little 'warmer' ... around 14 degrees. Lots of people there. I already did my dynamic workout at home so got on the TM right away. Progressive run on 'random' setting which has 2-6% incline. Finished 6.2. Then another mile on the track with a couple of running exercises on the straightaways. So total of 7.2 miles. Then 10 min of kettle ball. Then stretching with TRX. Good easy workout. Did some foam rolling at home.

Maybe it was lucky that I didn't go to the gym yesterday. There was an indoor track meet so the track was closed for most of the day. The TMs, etc were still open tho but it's wierd to be working out with a bunch of spectators around.

Today: drove to gym again. Decided on an easy workout. Just to loosen some tights joints I hope.
Around 20 degrees with a high of 23 but in the teens all day with the windchill.
I got to the gym after DH left for work after lunch. The track team was already getting ready for their workout so no running on the track. But that was fine.
Started with 10 min on elliptical.
Then 2 miles of power walking on TM on random inclines between 6-11% at slow pace, between 4.5-5.5. WHEW!!
Then 1 mile easy run at 3% incline. This seems to keep my knee happy. I think the stress (from pounding on flat surface for too long) is what causes my knee to start feeling tight/fatigue. The incline takes most of the burden off my knee and directs it to other muscles. At least it feels that way.
Anyway, got in some weights, and finally finished with some TRX, that seems to really help stretch out the kinks all over.

I plan on going to the gym tomorrow again. My last day and then my one month membership expires. I will probably renew but I think I will wait till next week. I would like to train the month of Feb since I will be getting ready for my trip back to AZ early March. I might run a trail race ....... on the way down....... in CO. Would like to feel that I'm at least ready for a HM.

Good morning ladies!
JC, fudge brownies, YUM!! We’ve had such a warm January and very little snow. We’ve lucked out for our training so far! I’m heading out for a run soon and it’s in the mid 40’s. Feels strange and I miss the snow. If it’s going to be winter, I want snow! Temps are going to get cold the next couple of days though. Stay warm!

Nancy, I can’t remember when you are going on your cruise but if it’s now, hope you are having fun!! Just walking around the gigantic cruise ship will be great exercise!

Lisa, sounds like your Boston training is going really well. I’m so happy for you! I know it’s an expensive race but such a huge bucket list race! That’s the way I feel about our Disney race. I think it was $200 for the Princess Half. Given that cost, it may be my one and only Disney race. So far, the training alone, with Emma, has been worth the price! Priceless.

Speaking of Emma, we ran a strong 12 miler last Saturday and she is having the same foot issue I had! We haven’t run since then but she did have a wellness day at school yesterday and took a Zumba class. Good cross training workout. I went to the mall with my friend Amy so lots of walking. I’m running solo today. Emma has a cold and no school... the school lost power yesterday afternoon and they don’t make whatever part they need to fix it. The backup generator also failed so double whammy. It would have been too cold inside the school so Emma gets the day off to recuperate.

Ok, off for my run! Happy Hump Day!

I'm still here, we leave Sunday. Then you won't hear from me until February... have been doing my stretches and walking. Plan to visit the ships gym but no guarantee.

Laughing at JC's comment that it was warmer at 14 degrees... we hit 72 this past Saturday! And Sunday was around 63-65. I agree that is strange for this time of year, but I like it. I am happy with the mild winter so far, sorry Erica! Though it looks like Saturday we should be getting some of the white stuff.

Good job on your runs with Emma! Bummed about her foot, genetic? Or just a strange coincidence.

Erica: gosh, I hope Emma feels better and her foot problem is just one of those funny weird issues that goes away sooner than her cold. Was that 12 miler your last long run and it's taper time? Strong long runs are always such an incredible feeling.

Nancy: are you all packed? What stops do you have? I bet the ship's gym is amazing with nice machines! I've never been on a cruise. Sounds like you are still on a slow mend but that's good news, right?

Well, it was another artic night here. Woke up to around -22 degrees this morning!! Windchill was brutal, in the -30s. When DH came home for lunch, he kept his truck running as it was still not fully warm!! WHAT?!? Old truck so not a surprise. The temp did warm up to around -5 degree, feels -8 with windchill.
It snowed all morning Tues and Wed, and it was cloudy and dismal.
So today, it's SUNNY!! 😎 On gorgeous, once in a blue moon day like this, it's so tempting to run outside but the temps are scary. If I'm going to do something stupid like that, I'm going to save that shivering and frozen smile for this Saturday's 10K run. That's my thinking.

Yep, gym membership expired so I stayed home yesterday and probably today. These 'REST DAYS" can become a guilty habit, LOL!! I worked out at home with some weights, about 15 min on health rider, stretching, foam rolling. I do some exercises from articles that I get online. They help to break up the monotomy. Been trying some 'dance cardio'...... my knee does NOT like it. haha!!

Hi ladies,

I just got back from a whirlwind work trip, to Boulder, CO., Tuesday morning (5:45 AM flight so we could go direct.) I went with 2 friends from work, so that was nice. We went straight from the airport to our office until 2, tried to take naps, then went to a dinner at the VPs house who was running the meeting. She has horses and the house, so gorgeous! Yesterday we had an all day meeting and then met some people we all used to work with at a margarita/taco place, it was perfect. Back to the hotel after and we all just went to our rooms and crashed, left the hotel at 5 this morning. Layover in Baltimore, I am spent, I was also the driver the whole time. I wish we took an extra day to explore the area, I’m not sure if or when I’ll be back. It was fairly warm, 50 Tuesday and high 40’s yesterday.
Sunday I took the dog for a hike the day after 8 miles, it was 70! Monday I ran 30 minutes on the treadmill. Tuesday I was up at 2:45 to get to the airport. Wednesday I was awake at 3:30 MT, used the hotel fitness center and ran 3 miles of hill repeats, really good workout. I just couldn’t get up this morning, and it was a 12 hour day of traveling.
More to come!

Lisa: I tried that a couple of times but didn't go through. Maybe image too large? Anyway, here's another go at it.

Ok, it worked, YAY!! But the image in my folder is right side up but it appeared sideways when I posted ......weird! Oh well, you all get it right?
This is was my New Year's Day annual run.
5.9 miles b/c it's my age.
I started with running my age in minutes but it was too short of a run so I changed it to miles.
Let's see if I can keep that up when I'm past 80, LOL!!
