Forums: Connect with Another Mother Runner

A huge, sweaty welcome to the another mother runner forums, an exclusive but inclusive—that makes sense, right?—place to connect, chat, ask, analyze, and dream big with other runners. The beauty of this running forum is that, unlike our Facebook page, the status updates don’t float by in less than a day. Here they are, accessible whenever you need the 411.

Anything is game here: questions about training, nutrition, sports bras, leaking on the run, whatever. Two categories we think are pretty cool: a match.com for mother runners, where you can find a BRF (best running friend) and free gear swap, a place to find a home for your newish gear you never use. (The recipient pays only for shipping; thank you in advance for respecting this rule.)

So whatever you've got—IT band problems; stroller questions; a picture-perfect race; shoe issues—lay it on the collective us. If you'd like to nominate a category we forgot, email us at runmother [at] gmail [dot] com. We're all here to push each other across the finish line again and again.

Post Running Isnt Working ???

I have been running/racing for six years - through three pregnancies. My last baby will be 1 in November. I run for reasons other than weight loss, but I am kind of sick of not going anywhere with my weight. It's not just the numbers on the scale, but my pant size. I can't figure out why this time it's so much harder to drop the weight. I am 33 (so not exactly old or young). Could that be it? Anyone have any tips?

I would see your dr and have your thyroid levels checked (and maybe other hormone levels, too?). It's probably a long shot, but it's worth a simple blood test. Especially if you've been a runner for awhile and this is different from what you used to experience.

One other thought.....are you nursing? Some women find that their bodies hang on to a bit of extra weight while they are nursing.

Track your food intake on a site like My Fitness Pal to get a handle on how many calories you are ingesting. I agree with checking thyroid as well. Hypothyroidism is very common among mothers. You would probably notice other symptoms though if your thyroid was not working properly.

I second the food tracking advice. those calories can be sneaky, especially the ones in taking bites off little ones' plates! make sure to give yourself credit for the bites they take off your plate too!

are you doing any type of exercise other than running? consider adding a bit of weight training. I had plateaued for awhile but just mixing things up got the numbers (scale and pants) moving again.

Perhaps you are at a plateau? That happens when you do any type of workout routine for a long period of time. If you want to start seeing results again, you need to mix it up.

Regarding food, I recommend tracking what you eat and when. If you decide to starting doing more fitness running with weights, multiply your bodyweight by 15- that should be your caloric intake a day. I found this really great nutrition for runners guide that offers some tips that could maybe help you.
