Forums: Connect with Another Mother Runner

A huge, sweaty welcome to the another mother runner forums, an exclusive but inclusive—that makes sense, right?—place to connect, chat, ask, analyze, and dream big with other runners. The beauty of this running forum is that, unlike our Facebook page, the status updates don’t float by in less than a day. Here they are, accessible whenever you need the 411.

Anything is game here: questions about training, nutrition, sports bras, leaking on the run, whatever. Two categories we think are pretty cool: a match.com for mother runners, where you can find a BRF (best running friend) and free gear swap, a place to find a home for your newish gear you never use. (The recipient pays only for shipping; thank you in advance for respecting this rule.)

So whatever you've got—IT band problems; stroller questions; a picture-perfect race; shoe issues—lay it on the collective us. If you'd like to nominate a category we forgot, email us at runmother [at] gmail [dot] com. We're all here to push each other across the finish line again and again.

I can't believe July is over already! I had a good month exercise-wise, haven't added up my mileage, but I added a LOT of cross-training and I can see the results when I run, yay! Dare I say I can also see some new (old) muscle tone? Shhhh.

Erica- I'm still not getting into Falmouth, maybe because college move-in will be 3 days later? Not sure. Sounds like you are on track with your plan. Luckily you don't have to go too far when you go back and forth to Maine?

Nancy- glad you like the bullet capris, I agree with Erica re: keeping the stomach in place. I have the shorts, too, but didn't realize how short they are. I'm 5'10" and they are like bun huggers on me, needless to say I don't wear them outside the house. Yay on your 17 miles! You are really getting into the heart of training now.

JC- 8.2 miles in feels like 85? THAT is amazing. Do you have a race on your calendar coming up? Apologies if I missed it.

Hi Jana!

Contemplating another full marathon, was thinking of Pittsburgh but I have already run a PA marathon. Something in my head makes me want to run each in a different state, not sure why, doubt I could be a 50 Stater. Asked several times if I wanted to run NYC again-nope and nope!

Off to Delaware tonight, hoping for some down time on the beach since Ireland was definitely not relaxing.
Happy August!

WHAT?!? August???

Lisa: NICE on the muscle tone, miss buff!! LOL!! Feels good though, right? I understand wanting to run a different race. There's so many now and I love adventures but going to a different state takes some planning and travel time. I try to make those worthwhile. I assume that since many of the eastern states are small, and close, it would be easier to run in different states. Which one have you thought about? Once you decide, the 'adding up the mileage' falls into place, IMO. Good job on staying consistent on cross-training!!

Erica: hope your days in Maine are relaxing. When does school for kids begin?

Nancy: WTG on the 17 miler!! HIGH FIVE!!

Jana: hope summer days are going well.

I took it easy on the 8.2 miles in that temp, Nancy. It helped that humidity/dew point were low and I was in the shade of the trees for about 90% of it but I was still soaked! Yes, I have a 16 miler trail race coming up, The Badlands, on August 12. (see below) My trail RB is running the marathon distance. One of us had to, to justify the trip from MN to western ND, LOL!! The main difference and most challenging for this race would be running in no shade. 😎
Sunday, DH drove his '55 T-bird to the car show again. I drove/met him later in the morning. Walked around briefly, it is so uncomfortable HOT to walk around too long. He took/put up a canopy so that was nice. Later, I met/visited/stayed w/ a friend who lives there. Wonderful time visiting.
Monday: Drove back, got too lazy so had another 'rest day.'
Today: I'm going to the gym for a workout and get in some miles on indoor track and TM. We are meeting w/ a couple for dinner at their cabin this evening.

For Sept, not sure exactly what day we will be on our way back to AZ (moving), but it will be around Labor Day weekend I think. I have a couple of trail races in mind on the way down, LOL!! There's a HM trail race in Santa Fe, NM on 9/2 (Sat). There's a HM trail race in Estes Park, CO on 9/3 (Sun). We will be in separate vehicles so DH can continue on while I run one of these. Will see. For December and January, I'm hoping to find a trail race in CA, NV or TX.

Upcoming races:

Crazy it's August already!

That Bataan Memorial Death March marathon looks intense! Wow... I love all those races in Utah. We so enjoyed being there in May. Maybe someday...

Enjoy Delaware, Lisa!

6 miles today, 3 yesterday. Tuesdays always are hard, I don't know why.

Have a good week 🙂

August, oh boy!

I'm back in Maine until August 13th. Just came up with Emma. My husband and son are still in NH but are coming up this weeekend. School doesn't start until the day after Labor Day but soccer tryouts begin August 14th. First games are August 25th! Lots of schools around us begin the end of August so we have a few games before school starts.

Lisa, can't belief it's already college move in day! I forget. Where is Meghan going? Is she excited? Nice job on the cross training and running! I need to cross train. Yuck. Have fun in Delaware.

Nancy, how was your recovery from the 17 miles? Have you done any deep tissue massages? When I get up to my high mileage weeks, I try to schedule them to help work out the kinks. I also schedule one for a couple of days after my marathon.

JC, are you getting excited for your move? You are so funny that you are going to race along the way, lol!

Yesterday, I was supposed to do either a tempo run or a track workout. When my alarm went off, I knew it wasn't going to happen. I had 2 or 3 terrible nights sleep and was beyond tired. So, I skipped it. Not too worried. I ran 145 in the month of July. I needed the rest day more than the run. Hoping to get to the pool today and the track tomorrow,

Well, better get moving. Happy August!

I have never had a deep tissue massage, Erica. I don't know how that is different from a regular massage, but I don't like them I can never get comfortable I always feel funny.

Your comment about running 145 miles in July got me wondering... I have been keeping track of the miles run in my training log but never totaled for the month. For May (when training started) I ran 43.03miles; June 106.69; July 119.39. Wow that's a lot for me, we used to do 12/week, maybe 15.

Erica: those games are coming up fast, sounds like you'll be busy carpooling again. I LOVE deep tissue massage, don't like the fru fru massages, I need those deep muscles to know they are thought of, HA! Yes, I'm looking forward to moving 'home' ....but we are keeping the MN house, DH wants to come back now and then, not sure if I will ......if I do, it's becuz I have a trail race planned w/ RB. LOL!! Since I'm not an EARLY morning runner, I don't set my alarm but there are days when I don't get a good night's rest and body is resisting the day's run or gym workout. I wish I was into swimming, that sounds like such a good way to get a different workout, Enjoy!!

Nancy: I always get my deep tissue massages from females, I feel very uncomfortable if it was a male. I've been keep my weekly miles, not yet over 40 miles but slowly getting there. WOW!! You piled on some serious mileage for June and July!! woohoo!! I've been wanting to run the Bataan Memorial for a few years, always a schedule conflict and then last year, had to deal w/ the injury. I'm looking forward to my future races w/ gratitude.

So, Wed, went to gym again: 30 min elliptical, 3 mile effort run, 1/2 mile running drills/cooldown, 30 min weights.
Thursday: Legs could feel the workout from last two days. It was in the 50s here, OMG!! felt like fall and of course, Rest Day, duh!!
Friday (today): can you believe it was 65 degrees, humidity/dew point in the 40s, about 10mph breeze, mostly cloudy w/ full sun peeking through now and then, ran all miles on X-country trails w/ short hills, finished 12.2 miles. Felt great!! DH and I got in some dancing after dinner out. Hope to get in another workout at gym tomorrow.

Have a great weekend ladies!! stay cool and safe.

Hi,
I am heartbroken. Today we confirmed that my daughter has relapsed (Nephrotic Syndrome) after almost 7 years of being in remission. It came out of the blue. She was having some typical teenage drama Tuesday night so she was crying before she went to bed. She woke up with puffy, swollen eyes which is a sign of edema. It went down a bit during the day which is normal but throughout the week, it never completely went away and other symptoms appeared. My husband got a new prescription for her protein test strips (her other ones expired 7/2015) and brought them up last night. She tested her urine this morning while I was out for my long run and her protein levels were off the charts. My husband texted me and I lost it! I decided to finish my run because I needed time to cry and process. I didn't want to come home crying. I needed to collect myself and be strong for her. I called a few people and told them and cried some more, all while I was running. When I got back, we called the on call nephrologist at Tufts in Boston who told us to take her to the ER to be evaluated. They did blood work, checked her weight (up a little from the edema), her swelling, and her urine. Spent about 3 hours there and left with a prescription for steroids. I'm a bit numb now but better. We have a plan and hopefully she will respond quickly to the steroid and get back into remission and stay there!

Erica I am sorry. This stinks... I am glad you were able to get her evaluated right away and begin treatment. I will keep Emma and you all in my prayers. Sending you a big hug from NJ.

Erica: So sorry to hear the news about Emma. I hope she is feeling better? Totally understand the need to finish run for release, clarity and strength. Sounds like you and DH followed protocol and got her taken care of. She is strong just like her mom, so I won't doubt she will fight this and will be her old self soon. Many hugs to you all. Sending positive healing vibes. We are here.
