Forums: Connect with Another Mother Runner

A huge, sweaty welcome to the another mother runner forums, an exclusive but inclusive—that makes sense, right?—place to connect, chat, ask, analyze, and dream big with other runners. The beauty of this running forum is that, unlike our Facebook page, the status updates don’t float by in less than a day. Here they are, accessible whenever you need the 411.

Anything is game here: questions about training, nutrition, sports bras, leaking on the run, whatever. Two categories we think are pretty cool: a match.com for mother runners, where you can find a BRF (best running friend) and free gear swap, a place to find a home for your newish gear you never use. (The recipient pays only for shipping; thank you in advance for respecting this rule.)

So whatever you've got—IT band problems; stroller questions; a picture-perfect race; shoe issues—lay it on the collective us. If you'd like to nominate a category we forgot, email us at runmother [at] gmail [dot] com. We're all here to push each other across the finish line again and again.

Good morning and welcome to April. It may be April 2nd, but Mother Nature is still celebrating April Fool's Day, because it is snowing here... ugh.

Snowing here, too! I can't believe we didn't at least have a school delay, 3 inches of snow at 7 am & it just stopped. I haven't looked to see a total, sun is coming out so I hope it melts. We have 8 snow days already, at some point they will have to start taking April vacation days.
So I have decided not to do the Cherry Blossom 10-miler. The cutoff was stressing me out, and realized this weekend we will have to replace the turbo charger in my car soon, add that to the cost of a DC weekend and all the eating out and take out because of March power outages and I just didn't feel right about it. Come to find out there is a 10 mile race in the town next to mine on the same day, with a generous cut off time of 3 hours. Seems like a no brainer. I am glad I wasn't using my long run as a gauge, it was a slow slogfest. I had bad sleep 2 nights in a row, and had a blood test Saturday, I am going to say both of those things contributed. I felt fine (besides slow) running, but when I stopped my back seized up and hasn't been quite right. Taking a rest day today and will hopefully cross train tomorrow. I cooked Easter dinner for my parents and my family, Megan was home, too. We had a really nice time.
Happy April, I hope everyone is doing well!

That's good you listened to yourself, Lisa. No point in stressing yourself out even more, life is stressful enough. Small world there is a replacement race you can run, right by you... hopefully it's not snowing Saturday 😉

We had about 4 or 5", heavy wet stuff. Nearly all gone when I left work this afternoon.

I hope your back is feeling better.

Hello and happy April!
Lisa, I hear you on the racing expenses. I tend to mostly do local races that are cheap(er) and allow me to sleep in my own bed. Every once in a while, I’ll do a destination race so then I feel like it’s justified since I’m typically a frugal racer. So great that there is a local 10k! Yay! Can you defer your Cherry Blossom entry to next year?

JC, wow! I know you listed your planned races a while ago but you have a lot! Well, a lot for me, lol! The Bataan death march sounds interesting. Was it mostly walkers or a good mix? You did an awesome job! Congratulations! The loop course I ran wasn’t too bad because the loops were either in different directions (out and to the left then out and to the right) or in reverse direction. I remember when I went down the first series of really long hills on the first loop, I was loving it. Little did I know that I’d be going up those long hills at miles 10 and 11. I’m glad I didn’t pay too much attention to the course map or I may not have signed up! LOL!!

Nancy, awesome job on your 17.75k! Sounds super hilly. Ugh. The dirt and gravel sounds challenging too! I have a hard time with uneven surfaces. I’m not very graceful and I’m very cautious about my footing. Great job! So excited for MCM for you and your husband. Woohoo!! That’s one might need to be added to my bucket list.

Last week, Ethan overslept and lost car privileges for a week. Sigh. On the bright side, all his grades have been posted so that’s a relief. Now that the play is over, things have calmed down a bit. Emma has lacrosse practice after school and Ethan has some club stuff (Math, chess, and NHS) but otherwise, we are just cruising along. I hosted Easter for most of my family on Sunday. It was a fun and relaxing day. Egg hunt, decorating eggs, yummy food, and family.

Running has been meh. I think I may have been overly ambitious about attempting a half marathon PR this May but I’ll keep plugging along. Maybe something will click in and I’ll find my speed again. I’ve been struggling with some menopause stuff and I think that affecting me. Not sleeping well, lots of random bleeding, new medication (progesterone), racing heart/palpitations , just not myself. Just when I think things are getting better, nope. Hoping it will just suddenly be all done!

Looking forward to our trip to Disney in April. It may be the last time so I’m going to savor the chaos, crowds, and the joy on my kids faces! We’re going to do a backstage tour at Magic Kingdom so excited to see the inner workings. Before our trip, we have 2 mini trips to Ethan’s colleges for admitted students days. April 7th is at UNH and April 14th is RPI. RPI will be an overnight since it’s a 3 hour drive and we need to be there at 8:15. Hoping he will make a decision shortly after both trips.

Well, thats all for now. Happy Taco Tuesday!

Hi all,

No deferral for Cherry Blossom, guess I will just try again next year. Had registered for the local 10-miler. Back felt better so I (stupidly) tried an easy walk/run Tuesday. That set me back more. Dropped to the 3 1/2 mile race for Sunday and have walked slowly this week, no running, no work out of any type. I also had a touch of a bug or something, not a good week and of course my diet was then off also. Feeling..'fluffy'. Back is slowly getting better, but am trying to be smart. I need to rest it up and get healthy to start marathon training.

Have a great weekend!

Ugh Lisa I'm sorry... when it rains it pours. Seeing the weather forecast, I think it's snowing in DC (I would not be happy with that, if running). I hope you are taking it easy and letting things heal. There are/will be plenty of races to run. Hugs 🙂

Enjoy your college trips, Erica and then Disney - whohoo!!! Exciting times 🙂 sorry about your health issues - ah the joys of menopause. And kids. I'm guessing Ethan doesn't have a favorite picked yet? Do you? Once that decision is made, then it's on to graduation decisions-party, the prom, do they do a senior trip or day or anything? These last 2 months seem non-stop with all the things to do.

Hey JC!

Doing ok here. Some easy running on the treadmill at the gym and today will go outside, though it is so gloomy out. Thankfully it's not snowing. We are hoping starting next week we can run outside in the morning, enough with the treadmill. Thinking of Ethan graduation made me look at the calendar - holy cow Katie graduates college in 5 weeks!!

Hope you all have a nice weekend!

Hello and Happy Sunday!
Lisa, hope your back is ok. Back injuries are so tough. You never know what’s going to make it feel better and what’s going to aggravate it. Did you run the local race today?
Nancy, we went to UNH for admitted students day yesterday and I think Ethan is now leaning more towards RPI. Next weekend in our visit to RPI and I told him I’d like him to decide before we leave for Disney on the 21st. So, almost there. Phew! Can’t believe Katie is graduating from college! Feels like she was just a freshman yesterday! Does she know what she’s going to do after graduation? This weather has just been super gloomy! Yes, I’m glad it’s not snowing but when will spring come? Not so patiently waiting...
JC, hope you are well and outside running!
I was messaging my friend Gail the other day about our trip to Maui (they went last summer) and she said we should run and chat about it. So, this morning, she and her friend Robin (who I’ve also run with before), met me for an easy 10 miles. I haven’t run with anyone in so long and it was great! It went by so fast, felt (mostly) effortless, and was so great to chat and catch up. Thankful it was a cutback week, lol. We have a lot in common (kids similar ages) and it was nice to not be alone. Gail is training for a half and said she’d do some runs with me. Hoping she’ll join me next weekend for my 13 miler. Robin doesn’t tend to run more that 10 but we can always drop her off and do another loop.
Oh, last week I signed up for a women’s novice golf thing. We live on a public golf course but it’s been years sincerely I’ve gone golfing. It’s 1/2 hour of lessons and then we’ll play some holes with the instructor. It’s 4 Monday nights beginning April 30th and 2 or 3 of my neighbors are also doing it. Should be fun. Here’s hoping the weather cooperates!
Well, back to laundry. Have a great week!

I don't think I mentioned that I decided to run this trail half after my brother told me he was doing the 25 mile bike race. This is their first year for this event. They hope to add a full marathon in the future.

RR: Tuba City HM trail and bike race, April 8.

My brother stayed at our place on Saturday night, he lives/works near the NM/AZ stateline. He is doing the 25 mile trail bike ride, I'm running the HM. It's an hour difference in time so we are up at 4:45 am. Leave at 5:30 am after getting some breakfast packed, coffee. We arrive at the start location after driving about 1.5 mile on dirt, wash-board road. This is the first year for this race and lots of bikers and runners already, most from AZ but from UT, NM and CO. About 160 runners.

Bikers take off at 8 AM. Runners at 8:30 am. It's out and back. It's deep sand at the start down a short hill for only a few yards, then hard packed graded dirt road, lots of wash-board areas, a couple of short gradual inclines till mile 4, then it's downhill for almost a mile. We will be running back up this hill. Aid stations were well placed so I only had my collapsible water bottle in a small waist belt, some salt tabs and a gel, and lots of kleenex.

It's around 55 degrees and getting warmer with the wind picking up around mile 5. The front runners are already heading back, WOW!! And the wind is kicking up dirt and swirling across the course, I'm glad I brought/wearing my bandana which I use to cover my mouth when I'm running head-on into the wind/dirt. I'm beginning to pass ALOT of runners who took off way too fast at the beginning (IMO).

I walk through a couple of aid stations for water and gatorade. On the way back, I walk through the same A.S. for tissues to blow my nose, it's been running faster than I am HA! It's gotten more windy and sideways with dirt/sand. I jog up the hill to about halfway, then walked 30 seconds midway and jogged the remainder of the hill, YES!!

It's mile 10 and picked up the pace and pass a few more runners who are walking alot by then. The wind is at our backs finally. The hard dirt/wash board road is getting tough to run on. Hip is complaining but feeling ok. Knee is fine. I kept up with another female (younger) runner ahead of me but didn't catch her. She kept me going though.

I run up the short hill through the deep sand towards the finish. Had a strong finish!!
Chip time: 2:16. OV: 51/160 but I think less than that actually finished. AG: masters, 1st place!!
The results doesn't show my place in female but finishing in 51st overall probably puts me in good standing.

My brother had a good race and finish, he also got 1st place in masters! How often does that happen, a brother/sister team, LOL!!

Overall, great training run for my upcoming marathon, May 5th in NM.

Monday: ran easy 8 miles on mountain trails. NO soreness, tightness of hips felt much better after run.
Today: Rest

I thought I posted at least ONCE for April. Maybe I posted it in March.....duh!!

Erica: you have so much going on everyday, I'm impressed with you keeping it all organized.. It probably doesn't feel like it but you get things done, WOW!! Is Ethan feeling bad about losing driving privileges? When are you headed to Disneyland? or Disney World? Time and miles do go by much more quickly when you're running with a good buddy. Sounds like she is someone you can count on for long miles, nice! Those 'effortless' runs are amazing!! Wish I had more of them, LOL!! Are you going to watch the Boston marathon in person or on TV this year? The Bataan march was a mix of marchers and runners, many of the military were in 'teams' and from out of state.

Nancy: Congrats to you and DH on getting into MCM. I keep telling myself that I will run that someday ........since it's a road marathon, I try to keep that to one every few years, HA! The last road marathon was Grandma's marathon in Duluth, about 4 yrs ago? So my next one is May 5th, ouch......that's all I can say. LOL!! But it's worth it as those are on my bucket list. Hope the training is going well. Katie is graduating, how time flies!! What are her plans? Will she spend some time at home first? How exciting!!

Lisa: that just sucks! I feel so bad for you. Back issues are just so complicated.....and feeling sick, darn it! I hope you feel better real soon. Kudos for having the determination to run some miles though, WTG!! Yes, get some rest and start slowly, you'll be piling on some strong miles soon. Hang in there!

Jana: hope all is going well and you're staying warm up there. we miss you!

I'll be in Phoenix for the rest of the week for a dental conference. Will be visiting/staying with DD and GDs, can't wait, they are just too hilarious. Older GD loves jokes and they are so funny!! Child-rated, LOL!! Dreading the HOT temps .....but hope to get in some short hilly miles on the nearby desert mountains.

Hi all and Happy Friday!
JC, congratulations on your AG win! Woohoo!! Fantastic time! With all the wind and dirt, you must have been covered. Doesn’t seem too upset about losing driving privileges although he’s been getting up on time for the last week. He’s been getting rides home from friends or Emma (when she’s done lacrosse). We leave for Disney World tomorrow night. Hope you had fun in Phoenix.
Nancy, when do you start marathon training for MCM? June, July? Any goals for your second marathon? I’m trying to decide if I want to attempt a BQ in the fall. The race I would sign up for is the same weekend as parents weekend at Ethan’s school.
Lisa, how’s your back? Did you end up running the local race? When is Megan done with school?
Managed to avoid getting sick all winter and it’s was a horrific one...and now I have a wicked sore throat! Grr!!! Not happy. Hoping it goes away quickly or else our vacation is going to be interesting.
Running has been going ok. Can’t seem to find the speed I need for a half marathon PR but maybe it will arrive on race day which is May 12th. I’ve got a 15 miler on tap for tomorrow morning and then taper. Hoping to do a couple of runs while at Disney but won’t worry if I can’t find the time. We walk a million miles so it’s all good.
Ethan made his decision and will be going to RPI in the fall. Deposit made, signed up for student orientation. So excited for him! They had over 20K applicants for about 1500 openings. Now he just needs to get through the end of this school year: 4 AP exams, senior project, and all. I’m planning his graduation party. Just need to get the invitations in the mail when we get back from Florida.
Junior/senior prom is May 5th. Both kids are going. Ethan’s going with the same group of friends he went with last year and Emma’s going with her boyfriend who is a senior. Emma borrowed a dress from a friend. Love my frugal girl!
Well, I need to go clean my house and pack! I’ll try and check in next week. Have a great weekend!
