Forums: Connect with Another Mother Runner

A huge, sweaty welcome to the another mother runner forums, an exclusive but inclusive—that makes sense, right?—place to connect, chat, ask, analyze, and dream big with other runners. The beauty of this running forum is that, unlike our Facebook page, the status updates don’t float by in less than a day. Here they are, accessible whenever you need the 411.

Anything is game here: questions about training, nutrition, sports bras, leaking on the run, whatever. Two categories we think are pretty cool: a match.com for mother runners, where you can find a BRF (best running friend) and free gear swap, a place to find a home for your newish gear you never use. (The recipient pays only for shipping; thank you in advance for respecting this rule.)

So whatever you've got—IT band problems; stroller questions; a picture-perfect race; shoe issues—lay it on the collective us. If you'd like to nominate a category we forgot, email us at runmother [at] gmail [dot] com. We're all here to push each other across the finish line again and again.

Happy October and happy birthday Nancy! Only took me 4 days to remember to look for an October post and I think I posted on the last day of September, lol! My brain, oh boy!

Lots of running going on here getting ready for Richmond but unfortunately not great running. I’m not injured or anything but just can’t find any speed. This past week I have modified my race goals more times than I recall. Still not sure what I’m going to do but I have a few more weeks to obsess about it. Haha! I think I’m going to do a “magic mile” test to see where I am. I’ve plugged in my recent 5K and half in May into a half a dozen marathon predictors and results vary widely! Either way, I’m excited to a fun girls weekend in Richmond. I’ve never been there.

Mark is out of his cast and has done 2 easy 3 mile runs with me. Said he’s not sore but his cardio capacity has decreased. He’s doing PT 3 times a week and also hourly at home. Lots of work but he’s already improved in the last week.

Heading to Maine for one last weekend. October is such a busy month for us so sadly, this will be our last trip up until we open up again in May. I’m sad but not too much. We spent a ton of time there this summer. It’s all good.

Well, need to get rolling. Have a great day and a fun long weekend! I love fall!!

Greetings from NJ where summer refuses to leave. It is a warm 80 and humid here, our AC continues to run. The leaves have a little bit of color change, not much. I too enjoy fall, just waiting for it to arrive, haha!

Thanks for the birthday wishes 🙂 I had a fun day even though I had to work. And then we went out to dinner to a local Italian place with the kids.

Erica, glad to read Mark's cast is off and he is getting PT to help him get back. Saw your photo on FB, nice run 🙂

So 3 weeks until MCM. Not feeling like I am ready. Even though we started the training at 22 weeks instead of 20, as I had planned out when we'd miss runs, we still missed long runs and I just really haven't been into it either. Yesterday we did 20. The first 10 I felt great. Then my knee began to ache. I had to walk/run and eventually went to all walking the second 10. The IT was not happy. I did 20 miles in 4:28. Came home and sat with it up for a while, with ice. And took Aleve. Today it feels ok (even having gone to a wedding last night) so hopefully it stays that way.

Hope all is well with you ladies, JC and Lisa!

Talk to you during the week.

Follow up: we ran this morning outside in the dark with hand-held flashlights. Did 3 miles. Hips were a little sore, but nothing bad and my knee did fine. Feel looser now that the day has gone on and I was at work, up and about so hopefully my hips and knees are in a good place 🙂

Good morning!
Nancy, glad your hip and knee are better today. I always feel better after a recovery run. Seems to loosen up any tight spots from a long run. Even though you missed some run during training (it happens), you know you can go the distance. Better to make it to the starting line healthy and slightly undertrained than injured. Happy taper!

Since my last post, I’ve had a few better runs so feeling a bit better about my marathon. It’s still not going to be as fast as I’d hoped but I’ll adjust my goals and go from there. Friday I did a 15 miler and while it was slow, I felt strong pretty much the entire run. Sunday, Mark and I ran 4 miles at the beach and my easy pace was probably my fastest this training cycle and it only felt hard at the very beginning. Otherwise, I felt great! Then yesterday, I did an 8 miler with mid 6 at marathon pace. Since I have no idea what marathon pace is going to be, I ran by feel, checking my heart rate periodically and only looking at each mile when I was done. All my race paced miles ranged from 9:18-9:58 and I only stopped once to GU and take the sand out of my shoes. Our weather, while humid, has been cooler so I think that has helped a lot. I’m going to run a magic mile tomorrow to see if I can nail down my goals for Richmond. I have my last 20 miler on Friday.

Lisa, how’s life in the plastic bubble? Are you getting excited for your race? I hope you are getting lots of sleep this week! So excited for you!!!

JC, hope you are well. Remind me what races are coming up for you.

Well, time to get rolling. Have a great week!

Happy Tuesday, all!

I'm glad your runs have been better, Erica 🙂 that's always good to read. Your pace is awesome! When is the Richmond marathon, in November?

I agree when it is cooler here, it's a 'faster' run! I am a bit tired of the continued humidity here. But soon enough we'll be having snow so I guess I will stop complaining!

Ran 6miles this am outside with our flashlights. Have to be cautious since it is dark, but still I prefer it to running on the treadmill at the gym. Did ok. Tomorrow is usually weights, though since I have not been consistent with doing weights, when I did them last Monday I tweaked my back a little so likely if we do go to the gym tomorrow, Fred can do his weights and I'll just bike or walk on the TM, nothing fast, but just to do something.

Hi ladies! Happy belated Birthday Nancy!! Anything fun .....or did I miss that post?

Gosh, I feel so behind on checking in with you all. Not really anything BUSY .....but each day goes by so quickly. We were in Chicago for four days, short and sweet and rainy, was for a dental event for DH. I just went along for the ride. Ran on hotel TM, 4-5 mile intervals which I do neglect. On Saturday, ran couple of miles to cheer on the runners for the Chicago 10 mile race event along the lake front .......it's a road race, ouch!! Did some workouts with weights, elliptical and bike in the hotel fitness room. Then sightseeing and dinner with some colleagues in the evenings. Been to Chicago a few times before but always exciting to check out the city architecture.....love these 'old cities' history .....

I'm tapering for my upcoming Surph the Murph Trail Marathon, Oct 20 in Savage, MN (SW and suburb of Minneapolis). Visiting my only friend, and she is running too.

Ok, I gotta go. Will respond more another day. I'm tired. Ran over 8 miles on mountain trails.

Good morning!
Didn’t know it was going to rain today. Good thing I mowed the lawn yesterday! Taking a rest day today but I need to clean my house. I’m hosting my family for the October birthdays. (Brother in law and sister in law). Can’t wait!
JC, so good to hear from you! Are you getting excited for your trail marathon? Have you done this one before? I’m so impressed with your trail running! I tried it a few times and am just not coordinated enough. I was so afraid to trip and fall that I couldn’t enjoy the beauty of being in the woods. You rock!
Nancy, Richmond in November 10th. Yikes, 30 days!! I also have lots of fun things happening before then too! This weekend is the birthday party with family, breast cancer walk with family, and the following weekend is family weekend at RPI. Can’t wait to see my boy!!! Then the AMR retreat at the cape. Woohoo!!
Lisa, good luck this weekend! Can’t wait to hear your race report. Enjoy your victory lap!!
We booked our annual trip to the UK to see Mark’s family. We leave Christmas Eve and return Jan 3rd. Haven’t found any local races yet but we did booked tickets to see Hamilton in London. It’s a surprise Christmas gift for the kids. Hoping to see a premiere league soccer game too.
Ok, well, I better get moving. Sadly, this house isn’t going to clean itself! Have a great day!

🙂 YAY on not having any serious issues with hip and knee ............ my knee flares up when it feels I'm running too many downhills ......and the cold weather aggravates it too. Aging sucks! Have you tried 'knuckle lights?' I'm assuming you used regular flashlights ..........I've talked with others who say that knuckle lights give them headaches or gets them dizzy because the lights are bouncing up and down too much. I've yet to try but I would probably go with smaller regular LED flashlights.

Hi Erica! I'm actually looking forward to running this because my RB, Christie, will be running it too. Her work has been so overwhelming and stressful and spending too much on the road that she switched from 50 miler to 50K, then to the marathon. She's in her mid 40s, much stronger and faster runner than I so I'm counting on her to pull me through, LOL!! We run our own runs but I'm hoping to 'use' her to keep me going. Weather is predicted to be sunny .......fingers crossed!! I've run the 25K before, about 3-4 yrs ago so I remember the course pretty well. Not too technical, decent groomed grassy hills (it's in a state park) and it may be muddy, it's a challenging course nonetheless. I'll be driving up and staying a couple of weeks to visit and loiter all the REIs on the way, LOL!! 😀
