Forums: Connect with Another Mother Runner

A huge, sweaty welcome to the another mother runner forums, an exclusive but inclusive—that makes sense, right?—place to connect, chat, ask, analyze, and dream big with other runners. The beauty of this running forum is that, unlike our Facebook page, the status updates don’t float by in less than a day. Here they are, accessible whenever you need the 411.

Anything is game here: questions about training, nutrition, sports bras, leaking on the run, whatever. Two categories we think are pretty cool: a match.com for mother runners, where you can find a BRF (best running friend) and free gear swap, a place to find a home for your newish gear you never use. (The recipient pays only for shipping; thank you in advance for respecting this rule.)

So whatever you've got—IT band problems; stroller questions; a picture-perfect race; shoe issues—lay it on the collective us. If you'd like to nominate a category we forgot, email us at runmother [at] gmail [dot] com. We're all here to push each other across the finish line again and again.

And now it's December, wow, the year has flown!

Heading out soon for my run. So far have kept up the streak 🙂 previously we ran T-Th-Sat, did weights M-W, took F and Su off. When we were training this summer we also ran on M and skipped weights W. In retrospect I think I should have kept up some kind of strength training, even if it was once a week. Oh well, that is over and done. Since I am doing this streak, just to mix it up a bit, I am just running a mile on the TM M through Th, then doing weights. F I ran outside at 6:30am before work and will do the same on S. Today being Saturday I will likely run 6miles.

Haven't done much for Christmas yet, need to get myself organized and get going!

Have a good weekend, all.

Good thing you told me on the November chat group that you started the December one, Lol!

Nancy, the podiatrist said they just develop. I had read there was a link to diabetes (I’m prediabetic) but he said he hadn’t seen that or heard that. It can sometimes be caused by a trauma but I haven’t had anything happen to that part of my foot. I did step on a rock last summer and needed PT to break up the scar tissue but that was my heel. And I can’t recall which foot that was. #old. I go back in 2 weeks to see if the orthotics are working. He said thicker sock also help. I found a newish pair of running shoes that didn’t quite work for me and I was about to donate them but I’m going to keep them and use them in the house so I can use the orthotics. My slippers won’t work for that. My massage was painful but good. My back started to feel better Thursday. I ran 3 miles this morning. My foot was ok...only complained about halfway through and then went silent. My right calf cramped up a bit but in a lower spot so I know the issue during the marathon was not a tear but a knot. Back was and is fine. Yay! So, I need to do some massaging of my calf before I run again on Monday.

I’m almost done my Christmas shopping. We are taking the kids to see Hamilton in London and to a soccer game (Arsenal v Fulham) so they are done. Got stuff for my niece and nephew but need a little something else for my niece. She’s difficult to shop for. We don’t exchange with adults. Decided not to get a tree this year since we’re lesving on the 24th but we will put up some decorations and the fake tree.

Ok, off to do some paperwork. Have a great weekend!

Glad to hear that you have a diagnosis Erica. Bummer that there isn't more you can do about it. That's odd though. With more runners in the last few years, you would think more injuries have surfaced and are being noticed and treatments in the works ...... but we are a bunch of tough ones. I really hope the orthotics work. Is it for both feet? Does it feel like a 'huge rock or small pebble' when you step on it. YIPPEE that you can run on it ...........and hope the calf massage do wonders. I have those calf cramps too. Sometimes I have to massage them during a run. Another crisis to think about, LOL!!

Oh dear, gotta sign off, time is ticking down on library computer, HA!

Nice work on the Christmas shopping! I am slowly ordering things online, did a tiny bit Sunday at our local Kohl's 'cause I had to buy a baby shower gift for a co-worker. I ordered photo cards, waiting for them to come. Work has been a bear so not really feeling in the spirit, just feeling sorry for myself. It'll pass.

Glad you were able to run. How weird that they 'just develop'. Hopefully the orthotics helps with around the house. Your trips sounds great!

Hope all is well JC and Lisa!

Nancy: I'm so NOT a shopper ......but I do look for things throughout the year from my travels, and hide them till the holidays ........then I can't remember where I hid them, HAHA, goof ball!

Erica: sounds so exciting ..... your London trip at the holidays again. You amaze me on your time management with all the events taking place with family, kids, friends. So are the orthotics working? I hope so. I looked up the Maine marathon ...... looks so scenic!!

Not sure where we will be for Christmas, I'd rather stay home this year. DD gets stressed out because she has to figure out a schedule for the GDs to spend time with her and with their dad ......actually the other grandparents. They have too much control over her which drives me crazy but I stay away from that topic. Anyway, I know I'm running the 'midnight madness' event on NYE's and on New Year's day.
Last Tueday: So I joined a small fitness/wellness center. Closed on weekends which is fine with me. Ran 4 miles on TM, some weights, stretching and elliptical.
Rest WED.
Thurs: finally saw new doctor and I like her......so I'll keep her, LOL!! We went over my lab results from Nov. All good. I asked for a referral to P.T. Then I went to wellness center, ran 5 miles on Thurs on TM again, elliptical.
Rest on Friday.
Saturday: decorated DH's '56 Buick for the Holiday of Lights parade. We had a slow start after getting up so no time to run. Parade was fun!! So festive!! It was cold but no wind, in the 30s. So crowded downtown so we just went home.
Sunday: 2.5 hrs of hiking and some jogging on trails where it looked 'safe'. Beautiful sunny day!
Today: Saw P.T. He did an analysis while I ran on TM. Had that done back in MN in 2016. I know I was doing well with band exercises recommended by him but I started backing off of them over time to where I was doing them when I remembered, my bad!! This P.T. showed me similar ones with the band. And he did the graston technique on lateral part of my right calf that I had a severe tear Nov 2015. https://www.grastontechnique.com/Patients
It feels so much better!! The MN P.T. did the same and also incorporated dry needling. Anyway, I promised to be more consistent with the band exercises to strengthen my glutes especially. Hopefully it will relieve some the stress on my right knee since I was definitely overcompensating with my left side. It was a good and optimistic visit.

Hey Lisa! Hope you're staying warm and enjoying the holidays.

TGIF!

Except for the part that you can't find the gifts you buy, that is a great idea JC!

Christmas is coming along here... majority of cards and gifts have been done. I can't thank Amazon enough for their services! This weekend is cookie weekend and next weekend I will wrap. Christmas Eve at my sisters, Christmas Day at his sisters, and I am off from work Dec 26th (yay!) and intend to slug. After my 1 mile, of course. I have kept up with running the mile daily. Saturdays I run more, 5-6. During the week at the gym I do the mile on the TM then do weights, alternating leg and arm days.

I am glad you feel better, JC and you had a good visit. A few years ago when I went to PT for my hip/glutes, they gave me exercises with a band which I eventually stopped doing. I should go back to that, also.

Hit the wrong button... to continue: the car parade sounds fun! Fred and I went into NYC on Monday, we had the day off. Yes it was crowded but fun to see the tree, the store window decorations, etc. We enjoyed walking around and taking it all in.

Alrighty, you all have a great weekend!

Hey Nancy, You got the cards done?!? Good for you!! I always tell myself EVERY YEAR to mail out cards before Dec. 1 ........and I've yet to do that. Past 5 yrs though, I just mail cards to people who have been sending one to us EACH YEAR. It's a short list, LOL!!

How far is it to NYC from your place?
We were there one year during the holidays just after Thanksgiving. We are there only 3 days for a conference that DH had to speak at. It was such an incredible sight with all the lights and decorations!! People still rushing around though. We just stroll along downtown before we flew back.
I was in D.C. for a conference for about 5 days in early Dec a couple of years ago. Loved the festivities and lights and enjoyed the stroll around the monuments. They had trees from each state and decorated with their STATE ornaments in front of the White House. A very talented family was playing and singing Christmas songs in front of the display.
Awesome that you have days off after the holidays!!

I only had ONE run, last Tuesday!! Went to fitness center. Warmed up with 10 min elliptical and cycling. Then 3.1 miles on TM, intervals. ONE mile on 6% grade. Proud of myself that I didn't quit. Back to elliptical and cycling for 20 min each, some stretching. Then another 3.1 on TM, intervals. And this time, 1/2 mile on 6% grade. Another round of 10 mins each on elliptical and cycling. I was a sweaty mess when done, HA!

Meetings took most of my time and by the time they are done, it's colder, and dark. It's amazing how much the temperature drops as soon as the sun sets behind the mountain. I've been good about the band exercises though. My glutes are sore, LOL!! Guess I'm doing them right....... incorporating some weights too, along with stretching and foam rolling which I'm re-learning to only go UP, not back and forth.
Today: Ran 8 miles. Took 1 min walk break every 10 mins. Trail was drying up so few areas of mud and slush. 43 degrees when I started, around 51 when I got done. NICE!! Especially with full sun, YAY!! Gosh, I use to run in temps colder than this when in MN, it's all a blur now and body has totally adapted to these temps here. Wimp!! LOL!!

Oh, not sure if I mentioned this but I'm running this: https://raceroster.com/events/2018/17812/29th-annual-midnight-madness-run

Hello ladies!

So Saturday, got my 8 mile run on a trail.
Sunday: Wanted to get in a short run but neighbor stopped by, then another. Got a call from a friend who doesn't come to town much during the weekdays so we went out for lunch and could have talked for 3 more hours, LOL!!
Monday: 6 mile run on a different but more popular trail, more flat and more walkers, runners. Even saw and quick hello to 3 runners I recognized. Was around 45 degrees, probably a bit cooler with the slight breeze but it was invigorating. Then I went to the fitness center, did a mile on the TM at 12 incline........more of a jog but I made it!! Then 10 min elliptical and 10 min cycling. Finished w some stretching. Good workout!!
Today (Tues): had my second appt with P.T. We made sure I was doing my band exercises correctly .......I had my band the wrong way on my claw exercise, duh!! He did the graston massage technique again on the side of my right calf. It feels less 'knotty' .......is that a word? HAHA!!
So I'm waiting for the shop to call that my car is ready. Damaged repair from the hail back in August when I ran the Pikes Peak. Suppose to be ready last week but they were waiting for parts. ugh!! So my planned trip to NM didn't happen however, I'm still set on going so hopefully I leave for NM on Thurs, maybe Fri.
Not sure if I should get a short run in again since it's a beautiful sunny day and we didn't get the storm predicted ........well, they had some snow on the peaks. It's around 42 degrees now. P.T. suggested I take a day off from running and instead, go to the fitness center for strength exercises, and cycling.

Hope everyone is staying warm and enjoying the festive days of the season!!

Happy Tuesday, a week until Christmas. Wow time is flying. Shopping is done, need to wrap. We baked cookies this past week and packaged them up to give out. Cards sent out. Work is busy. I have been keeping up with the 1mile/day. Today I listed to the AMR podcast and heard Erica 🙂 nice job!

How nice to catch up with friends, JC. Good workouts. 12 incline on the TM... wow! I agree with the PT to have some variety. Safe travels to NM!
