AMR Women’s Running Retreat, Spring 2019: Join Us in Eau Claire, WI!

Join a bevy of BAMRs for the amazing 4-day, 3-night Another Mother Runner Run + Refresh Retreat in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, May 3-6, 2019. Whether you want to rev your engine at a beautiful race, torture your body with foam rolling (kidding! we mean learn new tricks), brush up on your nutrition with the one-and-only Ellie Kempton, or befriend other BAMRs, you will be delighted by the extended-weekend offerings.

We're bringing the Retreat to the Midwest (finally!). We are convening in friendly, lovely Eau Claire, Wisconsin (about 90 minutes east of Twin Cities) at the swank Lismore Hotel, a Hilton property. The friendly, informative fun starts on FRIDAY, May 3 (aka "Dimity's birthday!!") and wraps on MONDAY, May 6. The price of this retreat is $755 if you register by July 15th; $805 if you register after that date. Hotel is additional and should be booked directly through the Lismore Hotel.

We’ll run, gab, laugh, eat tasty food, drink adult beverages, sleep in quiet rooms, share racing advice, showcase how to decrease the risk of running injuries (and banish those niggling aches and pains!) and increase your speed, impart nutritional wisdom, do yoga, and reinvigorate your passion for our beloved sport.

And—AND—we will be taking part in the beautiful Eau Claire Marathon, doing your choice of race distance: 26.2; 13.1; marathon relay; or 5K (or cheer squad!). The mostly flat, scenic routes starts and ends in a pretty park and runs through downtown and beside (and across--11 bridges!) two rivers. If you choose, the race can be the culmination of a Train Like a Mother Club program allowing us to celebrate the finish line together, in person, after getting to know each other through a private Facebook page for Retreat participants.

We could go on and on, but here’s the almost-Twitter-length version: Our goal is for you to leave the AMR Retreat feeling refreshed, inspired, informed, connected, supported, and fired up for many more miles.

Some Q+A's to break down the details into bite-size pieces.

When is the Retreat? May 3-6, 2019. (Please note: Retreat starts on a FRIDAY and ends on MONDAY, due to races being on Sunday.)

What is the cost of the Retreat? $805. Hotel is additional and will be booked directly through the Lismore Hotel.

Where is it? In Eau Claire, Wisconsin, the self-proclaimed “Indie Capital of the Midwest," which is about 90 minutes east of the Twin Cities. This independent-minded university town is on the rise, with artists and musicians (including lead singer of Bon Iver) investing in downtown projects. Naturally as beautiful as its name, Eau Claire is located at the confluence of the Eau Claire and Chippewa rivers, with running trails and bridges optimizing access and views. (And don't even get us started about how dang NICE and welcoming residents are!

What level runner do I have to be to attend? Newbies to ultra-marathoners are all welcome. In order to get the most out of the Retreat, it will be helpful if you can cover 3 miles in run/walk intervals, regardless of pace. Opt for race distance from 5K up to marathon--or join members of Team AMR as part of a boisterous cheer squad! The race is totally optional.

What does the schedule look like? The race is the cornerstone of the Retreat, so we’re planning around that SUNDAY morning event. We'll have the Eau Claire schedule finalized about six weeks prior to the Retreat. In the meantime, here's a rundown:

We’ll kick things off FRIDAY afternoon with an educational session, then a welcome reception to get to know each other, plus a podcast-recording party.

SATURDAY morning will start with a shake-out run (2-5 miles on the Chippewa River Water Trail, steps from our host-hotel) or strength session lead by Dimity and a delicious order-from-a-menu breakfast (the first of several during the Retreat), followed by educational sessions with experts who get the mother running lifestyle and concerns. You'll also have time on Friday and Saturday for one-on-one sessions with our experts in attendance. Saturday afternoon will feature a get-you-fired-up-and-informed talk that is focused on optimizing your race experience. The run wraps early evening with a delicious, fuel-you-well dinner.

SUNDAY morning will be the marathon/half/relay/5K (and high-5's + special tent for BAMRs at Carson Park finish area!), followed by lunch, and a yoga session. If you’re so inclined, we’ll check out a few fun boutiques in downtown, a stone's throw from our hotel. A gentle, restorative yoga session will be offered at a nearby studio. Sunday night is a high point with a the celebratory, we-did-IT dinner (karaoke is always a possibility!). We'll wrap the Retreat on MONDAY morning with breakfast on your own, but an open suite with light fare and beverages where Team AMR will be to send you on your way with photos and hugs.

Joining SBS + Dimity are:

Ellie Kempton, the gracious, insightful nutritionist from the Train Like a Mother Club, who will help Retreaters grow simple nutritional habits for sustained health and vitality.

Justin Ross, the sports psychologist Train Like a Mother Club, who will help you get your head race-ready, as well as talk about goal-setting.

Amanda Loudin, the TLAM Club coach of traditional programs and occasional AMR podcast co-host. Amanda is also a freelance writer whose work often appears in the Washington Post, Runner's World, and other publications.

A TriggerPoint Therapy Master Trainer who will show you how to roll and release like a pro.

This is truly a dream team of experts. Whether you cover a mile in 14 minutes or half that time, your running—and your life—will benefit greatly by hanging around these inspirational, insightful folks for a weekend.

I'm a new runner. Will I fit in? Absolutely: You'll leave with a bunch of BRFs from around the country (and possibly the globe) who will virtually cheer you on through your upcoming miles and races!

I've run countless marathons. What will I get out of it? Along with the aforementioned BRFs (because you can never have too many!), you’ll learn from sessions on training schedules, injury prevention, fueling for running (and life!), racing, and living, and goal setting will add to your running arsenal. Plus, you can add another 26.2-notch to your belt with the wonderful Eau Claire Marathon!

Do I have to be a mother to be a part of the Retreat?  Not at all (and thanks for asking!): All women runners are welcome. Nothing mother-specific about the Retreat (except for the name of our brand!).

What’s up with Train Like a Mother Club program being incorporated into the build-up of the Retreat? It’s up to Retreat’ers whether or not they participate in a Train Like a Mother Club program pre-Retreat, but with the expert training plans, support, swag, and camaraderie, we think following a TLAM plan is a smart move.

I live on or near Eau Claire. Can I come? You betcha. We welcome locals and out-of-towners alike with open arms!

Should I attend solo? Um, do we sweat when we run? Yes, yes, yes, attend solo! We promise, you'll have an army of running buddies within the first mile—or actually, the first hours. At previous Retreats, the majority of gals attended solo--but they weren't alone. That said, you'll also have the opportunity to enjoy some much-needed quiet in your room, strolling beside the river, or exploring downtown Eau Claire. If you attend solo but want to split cost of hotel room, the Retreat's private Facebook page can help you find a roomie. Loads of previous Retreat attendees have gone this route--and come away with a new friend.

And if I attend with just me, myself, and I, can I get a roommate? Yes: Hold off on booking a room. Within 48 hours of registering for Retreat, you'll get invited to private Facebook group for Retreat. You can then post that you are looking for a roomie; you should be able to find one pretty easily. Once you find a roomie, book a room at the Lismore Hotel. Or book a room with two queen-sized beds, then find your roommate.

What if I want to come with my BRF? We've got you covered, and the hotel has rooms with two queen-sized beds.

What if I want to come with my posse of BRFs—and pretend this is a non-stop slumber party? Pack your PJ’s and bring 'em! Big spoon, little spoon: two queen beds.

The Eau Claire Marathon races sound lovely: What are the courses like? All races (5K, 13.1, 26.2, marathon relay) start and finish in Carson Park, a 134-acre peninsula surrounded by Half Moon Lake. As you exit the park, you will cross the first of 11 (!!) bridges in the half and the marathon. Making your way through EC, you'll enjoy the beauty and tranquility of both the Eau Claire and Chippewa rivers as well as many parks. Toward the end of the half and the full, you'll be cheered like never before as you run the "BluGold Mile," lined with exuberant University of Wisconsin students!

Is there a limit on how many gals can attend? Yes, we want to ensure everyone has a memorable, meaningful experience, so we are limiting the Eau Claire Retreat to 75 women.

What's included in the packages? Guided runs + workouts; Sunday afternoon yoga; all educational sessions; meals (hot, order-from-menu breakfasts on Saturday + Monday; celebratory send-off on Monday; lunch on Saturday and Sunday; evening reception on Friday; podcast party on Friday; dinner on Saturday and Sunday); amazing swag bags; and race-of-your-choice registration for Eau Claire Marathon. Travel to/from Eau Claire is  not included, neither is lodging: You will book your choice of rooms at the Lismore Hotel separately. Laughter, camaraderie, and sweat: limitless—and free-flowing all Retreat long.

Just so I’m clear: Once I register for the Retreat, I should book a hotel room at the host hotel, right? If only our children were as good at following directions as you are! Yes, you are correct: Lodging is not included, so you need to make your own hotel reservations. Our host hotel is the swank Lismore Hotel , and we have negotiated great room rates (that kick-in Thursday, May 2 in case you want to extend your time in Wisco + include breakfast). All the educational sessions, all breakfasts, and Friday reception/podcast party will take place at the Lismore Hotel.

Do I need a rental car? It depends. Eau Claire is a roughly 90-minute drive from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, the airport we'd suggest you fly into if you are flying to the Retreat. The Chippewa Valley Airport Service supplies 19 shuttles a day from MSP Airport to Eau Claire; one-way pricing is currently $41. A rental car would give you greater freedom. We suggest you hold off on booking a rental car until you spend some time on private Retreat Facebook page (you'll get an invitation within 48 hours of registering for Retreat) because you'll probably be able to carpool with other gals flying in and you all can share cost of rental car. Once you arrive in Eau Claire, you'll have no need for a car.

What time should I arrive in Eau Claire and then, sniff, sniff, depart on Monday? We'll kick things off at 2 p.m. FRIDAY, May 3. If you fly into Minneapolis-St. Paul, opt for a flight that arrives in the morning, as Eau Claire is an easy 90-minute drive away. There's no hard-and-fast programming on Monday: You decide on your departure time. We'd suggest a flight at 1 p.m. or later, but it's your choice based on flight options. (And if you're a local and really need to be at work on Monday, you can swing that--although you might walk a bit stiff-legged if you tackle the marathon...)

Will there be swag, great running gear, and other surprises along the way?  In the words of Minnesota-bred Dimity: You betcha! We want to keep some details secret, but you’ll definitely be swagged many of our favorites, including Nuun Hydration; GU Energy Gels, Chews, and Stroopwafels; Balega socks; and much more. Plus, we're working with some locals on a special welcome gift!
