Our First Beginner—or Get-Back-to-It—5K Challenge!

NUUN Challenge 5k-03

Something clicks—maybe it's an ailing parent, or a pair of jeans that no longer fits, or the realization you haven't taken care of yourself in months, if not years—and you resolve you're going to be a runner.

So you lace up and head out.

But it doesn't feel as easy as other people make it look.

In fact, it feels nearly impossible.

Then you get _______________.
(Fill in the blank: intimidated, sore, overwhelmed, unmotivated, frustrated.)

And that resolve disappears as quickly as a box of Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies.

Sound familiar? We'll help you find that resolve again—and, more importantly, help you make running into a habit.

Okay, we admit we can't lace up your shoes for you—nor can we run the miles for you—but we can create an atmosphere where failure isn't an option, where you'll feel supported and encouraged every step of the way.

We can foster a community of like-minded women who get where you are in your life and who want you to succeed just as much as they want to themselves.

We can gently nudge you to get out when you'd rather not; to put self-care toward the top of your priority list, instead of at the very bottom; to uncover the strength and self-confidence that may have become hidden over time.

The Nuun Year: No Limits 5K Challenge is the perfect way for all beginning—or getting-back-to-it—runners who are looking to find their groove and a supportive community.

If you're coming back from pregnancy, we we've got your back. (Not to mention your sleep-deprived self, sore boobs, and stretched-out belly: We've got those, too!) If you're come back from a serious injury, and are unsure of how to get back out there without hurting yourself again, this is your program.

In addition to a flexible 10-week-long training plan that starts next Monday, March 2, the Challenge provides all the support, encouragement, advice, and community you need to get across a 5K finish line in mid-May—and establish (or re-establish) running as a habit, not a some-day dream.

The 5K Challenge includes:

☆ A mother-runner-friendly training plan. Designed by Coach Christine Hinton, the genius behind the popular and successful plans in Train Like a Mother, the 10-week plan is (much) more flexible than our hamstrings: Each week, there’s a workout you can bail on, if need be, and one that’s integral for your success. The plan runs from March 2 to May 10.

☆ An amazing community. Once you register for the Challenge, you’ll join our private No Limits 5K Club on Strava, a running app for smart phones. The members of each club are 5K Challengers following the same plan. (Read: You're all teammates on the most badass team ever.) As you log your miles and chart your runs, you’ll also cheer each other on, ask and answer questions, and maybe bitch a little bit about the workouts. (If you don’t have a smart phone, you can still join the party by accessing Strava via computer.)
☆ Accountability galore. In addition to the daily kudos and constant encouragement you’ll get from your fellow Challengers on Strava, we’ll preview and explain the upcoming week of workouts weekly. You'll also get the entire program as a printable PDF file, making it perfect for hanging on your fridge or cubical wall and marking off workouts—which is as satisfying as it sounds.

☆ Mother runner training secrets. We’ve got a few surprises up our PDF sleeves, which we’ll roll out regularly during the Challenge. Think: accessible strength-training routines; tasty and nutritious recipes; time-saving workout tips, all with the perspective of a busy yet ambitious mother runner in mind.

☆ A sweet finishers’ package. Each participant receives a No Limits participant tee and medal, mailed in early May. T-shirt specs: Flattering scoop neck. 50% polyester, 50% cotton. Women’s cut and sizing. Available in sizes XS-4XL. Here is a size chart to help you with sizing.

☆ Oh, and the best swag bag ever! Packed along with your No Limits tee and medal, you'll get a host of our favorite training essentials, including NuunGUBalega socks, and Hyland’s Homeopathic Remedies. Over $25 in training goodies because we know you'll need them as you set your eyes on your next 5K—or 10K? (Hey...just putting it out there.)

A FEW Q + A's

When does it start?
Next Monday, March 2! So you've got about a week to sign up.

I haven't run a step since junior year gym class. Is this program for me?

You betcha! The only physical prereq is walking for about a half-hour a few times a week for a month or more, you will feel comfortable on this well-designed plan.

The 5K plan is ideal if you are beginning runner; coming back from pregnancy or sidelining injury; or have just fallen off the running-wagon. All the workouts are walk/run until the final week of the plan; they gradually building up the time you spend running and decreasing how long you'll walk.

Are you sure I won't feel overwhelmed? I mean, your company name has the word runner in it!

We want to help aspiring runners take their first steps. We see the power and confidence that lights up new runners, and we want to ignite that spark in a very smart manner. This plan is gradual, starting with a walk-run ratio of 90 seconds of walking to 60 seconds of running, at a pace that won't leave you gasping for air. In addition, the group support you'll find on Strava will be a constant reminder you're not the only one testing new muscles and pushing past limits. We've got your back: You've just got to trust us to give you a little nudge on it!

How much does it cost to enter?

$55. The Challenge provides 10 weeks (70 days!) of getting in proper miles while staying motivated, accountable, and injury-free as possible.

And the perks are, dare we say, badass? We dare. You'll get a tee (that actually fits and you want to wear), a medal, lots of great swag, and tons of expertise and support. Plus, the fee covers shipping costs for your package. (International mother runners will be charged an additional $20 to cover shipping.)

Does the registration fee include a race?

No. The registration fee is for the comprehensive training plan, support, and swag we listed above, which will help you cross a 5K finish line with all the tools you need to continue on your running journey. Come May 10, you can either run a 5K on your own or participate in an organized race.

What if my target race isn’t May 10?

While the plan is designed to culminate on the weekend of May 10, talented Coach Christine will offer modifications to the plans to accommodate race dates ranging from May 2/3 all the way through May 30/31. We will share those training plans tweaks well in advance of your alternate race date during the program so you'll have an optimal race experience.

How will I get the training plan?

After you register, your first step on your journey to a 5K finish line will be to follow a link to a private landing page for No Limits 5K Challenge participants. You'll receive the link to the private page within 24 hours of registering. From there, you'll download the printable plan, as well as follow instructions on how to fully access all the supportive, instructive elements of the No Limits Challenge.
