As we talked about our sprint and Olympic-distance triathlon programs on the 2017 goal setting and race planning webinars, we heard lots of chatter about Half Ironman triathlons, which is a mother of a race: 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike, 13.1-mile run.
No race distance feels too ambitious for this crowd, of course, but a Half Ironman is a pretty big deal. You need to become efficient in three disciplines (plus strength train) for at least 20 weeks. You need to to learn to bike for 56 miles after a swim, run 13.1 miles after a bike, and fuel the whole way through. You need to prepare your body to be in motion for somewhere from six to eight hours—and ideally, finish with a smile and fist pump as you cross the line.
It's a big undertaking, but it's far from impossible. And TLAM triathlon Coaches Jennifer Harrison + Elizabeth Waterstraat are drooling over the idea of a Half Ironman program. To close the circle—and hopefully help you thrive over 70.3 miles—we're doing a little Field of Dreams experiment, the swim/bike/run version, over at the TLAM Club.
We want to field a team of 20 #mothertriathletes who want to take on a Half Ironman between July 1 and December 2017.
Why 20? Because Train Like a Mother challenges, like a bike peloton, thrive on teammates, teamwork, and momentum. It's kinda no fun if you're in a Facebook group, looking for some love after changing your first flat tire of the season, and you get none because you're the only one in there.
If we can draft a team by February 3—you can join the team by registering here—we will have everything polished and beautiful, ready to go by February 13 when training for Wave One will officially commence. Wave One will be for races on July 1-2, and we can train anybody for any race from July 1 through December of 2017.
If we are unable to fill the team, we will refund all the registration fees in full by February 6.
Want to be on the first ever Half Ironman #BAMT (badass mother triathlete) team? Get details and register here by February 3.
Triathlon not your thing, but you're dreaming of long, long races in 2017?
