Hugs and Squeezes: Winners of New RecoFit Calf Sleeves

My girls putting the squeeze on me

This week, in Kansas City, Dimity and I launched Train Like a Mother: How to Get Across Any Finish Line - and Not Lose Your Family, Job, or Sanity at the 30th anniversary celebration of KCExpress. We had such a great time meeting so many Midwestern mamas, and giving a talk about how to believe in yourself as a runner. We were also completely charmed by Kansas City and its surrounding communities. It was the first of about a dozen 2012 trips to promote our new book and meet mother runners. Translation: a lot of time away from our families.

Even though I was gone for only two nights, my kids seemed to sense it was the start of more mom-away time; they greeted me as if I was returning from a tour of duty in Afghanistan. They threw themselves at me, squeezing my midsection with a python's grip. John and Daphne kept jumping up, planting kisses on me. Then, a sure sign I'd been missed: 10-year-old Phoebe planted a big, wet smooth on my kisser. As she transitions from child to pre-teen, she's grown less inclined to kiss me. A kiss on the lips from her is as rare as training-for-Boston-me skipping a workout. It was a wonderful add-on to all the hugs.

Cold comfort: ice packs that slip into RecoFit calf sleeves

Today, I realized the hug-with-a-bonus is like the RecoFit calf sleeves we are bestowing on three mother runners: a hug+. These new calf-squeezers come with ice packs to slip into compartments on the front of the lower leg, allowing shin-splint sufferers to get compression + ice (two critical elements to RICE--Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation). The three winners had to let us know what would come out of their sweaty sports bra if they squeezed it post run. Here are the chosen-at-random winners and their responses:

Mars: My running bra drips MOTIVATION…I get up at 4:30 a.m. every day (even weekends) to run so I can get back before my family wakes up, so I can have time with them before I go to work. Motivation, baby.

Samantha: All the stress I finally let go of around Mile 7. Also, a little breast milk.

Jill Dettman: Pure, raw power. That’s what you’d squeeze out of my sports bra!!

Squeezed-mamas, please email us at runmother at gmail dot com to let us know your first and last name, mailing address, and the circumference of the burliest part of your calf so RecoFit can ship your sleeves to you. And here's a big hug to all the rest of you lovely ladies.
