Hump Day Giveaway: Lyric/Pa/Looza

The jumble in my head, post-run, looks very similar to this.

This may not come as a surprise to anybody, but I distract myself as best I can when I run. One of my fave games: pick the best lyric. Self-explanatory, the game requires me to find, in every song that comes up, a lyric that somehow captures some aspect of running.

Some songs are slam-dunks:

"Just can't turn and walk away."
All for You, Sister Hazel

"See, it's not about races, just places, faces, where your blood comes from, where your space is."
Black or White, Michael Jackson

"Lost track of how far I've gone, how far I've gone, how high I've climbed."
The Rising, Bruce Springsteen

"Who needs sleep?"
Who Needs Sleep?, The Barenaked Ladies

"Feet on ground, heart in hand."
Good Mother, Jann Arden (this is my new fave cool-down song, btw)

"And if I were like lightning, I wouldn't need no sneakers."
If I Had A Boat, Lyle Lovett (he is my all-time fave, btw)

Others are less obvious:

"Fine, fresh, fierce, we got it on lock."
California Gurls, Kate Perry (love the song, but fierce lyrics don't apply neatly to my Minnesota attitude)

"I will never travel far without a little big star."
Alex Chilton, The Replacements (not sure exactly what that means, but I like how it sounds)

"I don't feel so bad, I don't feel so bad, I don't feel so bad."
Wake Up Call, Maroon 5 (o.k., maybe that one is pretty obvious)

Am I the only one who plays this game? (Silence.) I'll take that as a yes, but guess what? Today, you all get to play! (I say that in the same sing-song tone that I usually use to make cleaning up the basement more appealing to my kids.) For today's humpday giveaway, I'm burning to know: what's a lyric that applies to your running?

Plastic bags, toys, and cups likely blanket your house, but these Silicone buds are a worthy addition to the stock.

Let us know, and three of you will have a chance to hear those lyrics loud and clear in a pair of killer new Yurbuds. We've had multiple inquiries on our Facebook page about finding earbuds that stay in the ears, and, as SBS always replies, we can guarantee that these innovative buds, attached to an extra-long cord, are the no-slip solution. Really? you ask skeptically. Truly, we reply: They're custom-fit, ergonomic masterpieces. In fact, to get the perfect size, a picture of your ear is required to get the right size. (Now, if only I could send in a picture of my ass to Seven Jeans, and they'd make a pair that fit in them.)

So what lyrics make you feel, as Kanye does, harder, faster, better, stronger?

And guess what, I’m havin’ more fun
And now that we’re done I’m gonna show you tonight

    The lyrics get me pumped!!

  4. You know I did it, it’s over and I feel fine.”

Foo Fighters – perfect for post-race celebrations (feeling fine is a relative state!)

  5. Christina Aguilera– Fighter

‘Cause if it wasn’t for all that you tried to do
I wouldn’t know just how capable I am to pull through
So I wanna say thank you

‘Cause it makes me that much stronger
Makes me work a little bit harder
It makes me that much wiser
So thanks for making me a fighter
Made me learn a little bit faster
Made my skin a little bit thicker
    Makes me that much smarter
So thanks for making me a fighter

  6. Dave Matthews Band – Why I Am

“It’s why I am, unlikely to agree.
It’s why I am, climbin’ out of my monkey tree.
Why I am, still here dancing with the GrooGrux King.
We’ll be drinking Big Whiskey while we dance and sing.
And when my story ends it’s gonna end with him.
Heaven or hell I’m going there with the GrooGrux King.”

Dire Straits – Sultans of Swing

“And then the man he steps right up to the microphone
And says at last just as the time bell rings
‘Thank you goodnight now it’s time to go home’
and he makes it fast whith one more thing
‘We are the Sultans of Swing’ “

  7. Ah, too many great lyrics!!!

“Feet fail me not” – Eminem, Lose Yourself

“And when you smile, The whole world stops and stares for a while” – Bruno Mars, Just the Way You Are

“Run, Run, Run, Run” – Pink Floyd, Run Like Hell

“Louder louder, And we’ll run for our lives” – Snow Patrol, Run

And finally, possibly one of the most inspirational running songs ever,

    “I run for hope
    I run to feel
    I run for the truth
    For all that is real
I run for your mother, your sister, your wife
I run for you and me, my friend
    I run for life”

Melissa Etheridge, I run for Hope

  8. A bunch of my favorites are already on the list! Here are some more:

“Breathe, Stretch, Shake, Let it Roll” – Mase

“You’d better work” – RuPaul (Supermodel)

“Why you wanna give me Run Around? It’s a surefire way to speed things up / when all it does is slow me down” – Blues Traveler (Run Around)

    “Float On” – Modest Mouse

“Cause I am barely breathing / and I can’t find the air” – Duncan Sheik

“We’ve come a long, long way together / through the hard times and the good / I have to celebrate you baby / I have to praise you like I should” – Fatboy Slim, Praise You (the FBS name alone is a funny running inspiration)

  9. Nothing original in my playlist.

“I Run for Life” by Melissa Etheridge is my Power Song.

“Harder to Breathe” (is there anyone out there??? cause it’s gettin’ harder and harder to breathe)

    “Run It” Chris Brown.

Love this list here — jumping over to iTunes to add some new material before the Saturday Long run!

  10. I’m gonna go 80s hair metal here…Bon Jovi

    Runaway (pretty obvious)

    Someday I’ll be Saturday Night…
Hey, man I’m alive, I’m taking each day and night at a time
Yeah, I’m down, but I know I’ll get by
Hey, man, I gotta live my life
Like I ain’t got nothing but this roll of the dice
Feeling like a Monday but someday I’ll be Saturday night

    and for the new stuff

    We Weren’t Born to Follow…
    We weren’t born to follow
C’mon and get up off your knees
When life is a bitter pill to swallow
You gotta hold on to what you believe
Believe that the sun will shine tomorrow
And that your saints and sinners bleed
    We weren’t born to follow
You gotta stand up for what you believe

Not so much directly attributable to running, but more about pushing through when the going gets tough.

  11. I also have so many songs, and I move them around on a few different running song lists that I choose depending on how I feel for each run. But I have a coupl of staples.

The first is a relatively new song that I think every running mother can identify with… because there is ALWAYS some hurdle to jump, ALWAYS something you need to get past and get over.

This too shall pass – from OK GO

“You know you can’t keep letting it get you down
And you can’t keep dragging that dead weight around
Is it really all that much to lug around
Better run like Hell when you hit the ground
    When the Morning Comes
Let it go… This too shall pass”

The second song is one from my personal inspiration list, because I identify with it from my life… but it has a little undermessage that I think running mothers like me will get. As a mother and a runner, we know that there are short cuts out there, but I choose not to take them. My life could be easier if I took the quick way out sometimes, but I am way happier doing it my way.

The long way around – by The Dixie Chicks

“I’ve been a long time gone now
Maybe someday, someday I’m gonna settle down
But I’ve always found my way somehow
By taking the long way around”

And beyond the lyrics, both of those songs have the perfect tempo form my pace, which helps a bunch on the longer runs.

  12. There are tons of lyrics that motivate me, but this is one that really hit me this weekend. I ran my first half-marathon. The route was incredibly challenging…up a volcano and back down. Lot of inclines coupled with high elevation. As I came down from the volcano and could see down the valley, my ipod played The Plain White T’s Rhythm of Love, and the line, I told her “I love the view from up here
The warm sun and wind in my ear
We’ll watch the world from above
As it turns to the rhythm of love” was just perfect for the situation.

  13. My run TOTALLY sucked today. Everything I wanted to accomplish, frustration, frustration, frustration. Ending my run, knowing my body, my stopwatch, my time, my mileage, my MUSIC – which is my lifeline – deserted me! Then as I finished & started cooling down, I heard these words in my ears:

“It’s amazing its amazing all that you can do, Its amazing, Now its up to you.

Patience now frustration in the air..Well its gonna get you down,
Yes you will hit a wall. But get back on your feet. And you’ll be stronger and smarter
wont take no for an answer…Nothing can compare to… your dreams”

So my mind said “you’re right, it is up to me and body, you’re gonna run some more” – put my feet in gear and forced some more out of me.

  14. When I finished my first half marathon at the beginning of the month, the song playing on my IPOD was Matchbox 20’s “How Far We’ve Come”
The lyrics “Well I believe it all is coming to an end
Oh well, I guess, we’re gonna pretend,
Let’s see how far we’ve come
Let’s see how far we’ve come”

It was pretty dang cool! So I am liking that right now.

And I have to say, if you have Black Eyed Peas on your IPOD, you may want to delete the song “Meet me Halfway” because the last thing you need is Fergie whining that “I can’t go on any further than this”. I was yelling “Shut up Fergie!” 🙂

  15. “O Praise Him” by the David Crowder Band. I listened to it while I ran on the morning of my wedding and then I put it on my labor playlist for the birth of our second daughter. It’s a song full of hope and it always inspires on my runs!

  16. here are a couple of my favorites:
“you can do it but your ass into it” ice cube, good for motivating me up the hills.
“I tremble, They’re going to eat me alive
If I stumble, They’re going to eat me alive” Metric. It keeps me motivated to keep going and not get passed by someone I just passed, I HATE that!

  17. “I’m Alive” by Kenny Chesney (with Dave Matthews)

    I’m alive
and today you know that’s good enough for me
breathing in and out’s a blessing can’t you see
today’s the first day of the rest of my life
    and I’m alive…..and well.

On any run (doesn’t have to be a long one) I listen to this song to remind myself how lucky I am to be able to run everyday. Makes those “wanna stop” voices in my head go away.

Great thread today – I’m making my playlist for Twin Cities on Sunday – got some new songs to add to my ipod today!! Thanks!

  18. Ok, so I guess I am really old school!
I love Footloose by Kenny Loggins,
Ready to Run by the Dixie Chicks,
Against the Wind by Bob Segar,
I get knocked down – Tubthumping – Chumbawamba
I run for life by Melissa Etheridge
Running on Empty by Jackson Browne
Rapid Roy the Stock Car Boy by Jim Croce
Ain’t Goin’ Down Til the Sun Comes Up – Garth Brooks
and pretty much everything Bruce Springsteen has ever done.

I haven’t run with Defying Gravity yet, but I LOVE the song!

  19. Have to have Dani California (Red Hot Chili Peppers) in my mix somewhere about the 3d or 4th mile of a long training run — As soon as it starts I wait for the lyrics that say “Down in the badlands she was savin’ the best for last–It only hurts when I laugh–
    Gone too fast..”
That’s my cue to check my pace– I’m always going too fast at that point once I’ve warmed up my muscles and gotten into a rhythm– one that won’t last 8 or 10 miles.

  20. Hello!

Mine is pretty obvious as well. I used it many times while running the 5k Montreal Marathon.

«Im running and im breathless but i have to go on
these steps are the beat and im singing this song
You hear it on the stereo where ever you are
and im running I’m running to you to you»
    Misstress Barbara (feat. Sam Roberts)

  21. LOVE my Yurbuds! And the picture thing does work. Took it on my bberry, they shipped super fast and THEY DO.NOT.FALL.OUT! at all.

    My warmup song:
I’m so obsessed, my heart is bound to beat right out my untrimmed chest
I believe in you, like a virgin, you’re Madonna, and I’m always gonna wanna blow your mind
    -Hey soul sister, Train

Run for life – Melissa Ethridge. No brainer.

    “Yo mama, she gets krazy
Now jump up, let?s get krazy”
    Krazy, Pitbull

“So while you’re in it try to get as much shit as you can
and when your run is over just admit when its at its end.”
    ~Till I collapse, Emminem

  22. Evanescence: Bring me to life

Wake me up inside, save me, call my name and save me from this darkness Ive become-bring me to life!

  23. It’s been a long time coming that I had to say
When I wake up in the morning all I do is pray
For some guidance and protection on the streets today
And an answer to the questions I ask everyday

(Hey, Hey, Hey Michael Franti and Spearhead)

  24. bethany dillon’s “Beautiful”

    i wanna be beautiful
    make you stand in awe
    look inside my heart
    and be amazed
    i wanna hear you say
what i am is quite enough
just wanna be worthy of love
    and beautiful

love the words, and the music is beautiful as well!

  25. I have 4 motivating tunes:
Jump Around by House of Pain
    Bootylicious by Destiny’s Child
Mother’s Little Helper by The Rolling Stones (good reminder why I run)
    8 Mile by Eminem
If you knew me, you’d say, “Whaaa?”

  26. I don’t listen to music when I run, but I sing, and my favourite sing-out loud at the top of my lungs when the endorphins are pumping through me: (by Edwin)

Ain’t it good to breathe the air
    Another spin around the sun
On this spec of life in the universe
A little peace of life in everyone
Ain’t it good to be alive?
Ain’t it good to be alive?
To feel the sun strong against your face
It spills over me like the milky way

  27. I’m always short on sleep and time, so these lyrics from Jackson Browne’s “Running on Empty” keep me going:

I don’t know where I’m running now, I’m just running on.
    Running on, running on empty,
    Running on, running blind,
Running on, running into the sun,
    But I’m running behind.

  28. Ok, I just have to give one more shout out to Glee.

Another fave (I like this for warm up or cool down)
    Glee Cast- Taking Chances

    My favorite line-
But what do you say to taking chances,
What do you say to jumping off the edge?
Never knowing if there’s solid ground below
Or hand to hold, or hell to pay,
    What do you say,
    What do you say?

When I started this half marathon training, I had NO IDEA if my body could do it. I had run a max of 3 miles before…13 seemed impossible! I felt like I was jumping off a cliff, with no idea of what would be next….but I went for it, and it feels great!

  29. The Glee Cast rocks on most of my runs…the lyrics are inspirational for underdogs (or slow mama runners).

One of my faves is from “Defying Gravity”…for a few reasons.

“Something has changed within me (reminds me, now I LIKE running. Used to hate it..,)
Something is not the same” (like the number of inches on my waist!)

    Too late for second guessing
Too late to go back to sleep (that’s for sure…although, I have tried it!)
It’s time to trust my instincts
To close my eyes and leap

Where my body has been, and where I am now (hitting 11 miles in my 1/2 training this week)…this mama IS Defying Gravity!!

  30. OK moms, I know you’ve heard the beginning of this one maybe a little too much if your kids are like mine (ages 5 and 11), but after I bought the CD (for them, really) and heard the extended cut I was hooked. So much of running, of life, is attitude, right? I defy you to have a bad attitude while listening to this.

Today Is Gonna Be a Great Day (by Bowling for Soup for Phineas and Ferb/Disney)

This could possibly be the best day ever
And the forecast says that tomorrow will likely be
A million and six times better
    So make every minute count
Jump up, jump in and seize the day
And let’s make sure that in every single possible way
Today is gonna to be a great day!

  31. I love running to Jackie Greene. Here is one of my favorite lyrics….
“And I should be home in bed, but the notion in my head is tellin’ me to ramble on…”

  32. I only listen to music when I am forced onto a treadmill (which thankfully doesn’t happen often). However, I often have a song in my head.

My turnaround song on out-and-back runs: “Oh, we’re halfway there, wo-oh livin’ on a prayer…” by Bon Jovi.

Or there’s always Run Like Hell by Pink Floyd: “Run…run…run…run…”

  33. Madonna-Ray of Light “Faster than a ray of light, she’s flying, trying to remeber where it all began….she’s got a little piece of heaven….
I am slow, but this does make me light and fast, and I often wonder where it all began!

  34. Shake it, shake it, shake it, girl. Just make sure you don’t break it girl.
“Pump It” by the Black Eyed Peas
Makes me put a little swagger in my step and swing my hips a little. 🙂 I’m sure anyone running/walking by (who am I kidding; at 5:30 am?) is thinking I am a freak. Oh well, a little attitude just makes it fun!

  35. I run out in the country on back roads with only the occasional car around…..

“Is there anyone out there, cause it’s getting harder and harder to breathe”….Maroon 5

    My music of choice tonight

  36. i always end up coming back to the Glee soundtrack, and this one was a favorite long before:

    Don’t Rain on My Parade

Don’t tell me not to live, just sit and putter
Life’s candy and the sun’s a ball of butter
Don’t bring around a cloud to rain on my parade
Don’t tell me not to fly, I simply got to
If someone takes a spill, it’s me and not you
Who told you you’re allowed to rain on my parade
I’ll march my band out, I’ll beat my drum
And if I’m fanned out, your turn at bat, sir
At least I didn’t fake it, hat, sir
    I guess I didn’t make it
But whether I’m the rose of sheer perfection
A freckle on the nose of life’s complexion
The cinder or the shiny apple of its eye
I gotta fly once, I gotta try once,
Only can die once, right, sir?
Ooh, life is juicy, juicy and you see,
I gotta have my bite, sir.
Get ready for me love, ’cause I’m a “comer”
I simply gotta march, my heart’s a drummer
Don’t bring around the cloud to rain on my parade,

I’m gonna live and live NOW!
Get what I want, I know how!
One roll for the whole shebang!
One throw that bell will go clang,
Eye on the target and wham,
One shot, one gun shot and bam!
Hey, Mr. Arnstein, here I am …

I’ll march my band out, I will beat my drum,
And if I’m fanned out, your turn at bat, sir,
At least I didn’t fake it, hat, sir,
    I guess I didn’t make it
Get ready for me love, ’cause I’m a “comer”
I simply gotta march, my heart’s a drummer
Nobody, no, nobody, is gonna rain on my parade!

and the one I want playing when I cross the finish line of my first half on 10/30 is by Seal…

    Amazing [Thin White Duke Version]

    You’re amazing
I want you to always feel amazing

    You say you don’t know
    How to do it now
    So you run
    It’s not that you’re bleeding
    But you’re through it now
    So you run
I know that you need it
    You can’t live alone
    So you run
    So you run

    Everyone says “You’re amazing!”
    Now that you’re clean
Only you know who the real ones are
    Cause you’ve seen
There’s only one question I want to ask
Is it healing when you hear
    Everyone say “You’re amazing!” ?
    Does anyone ask you?

Do you cry in your sleep
    And do you feel okay
    When you run?
    Thinking its doomsday
You got to let it go
    So you run
    Pretend you don’t see it
That way you can live the lie
    When you run
    So you run

    Everyone says “You’re amazing!”
    Now that you’re clean
Only you know who the real ones are
    Cause you’ve seen
There’s only one question I want to ask
Is it healing when you hear
    Everyone say “You’re amazing!” ?
    Does anyone ask you?

I want you to always feel amazing! (x 2)

Cause I know that you’re real – Amazing!

    Everyone says “You’re amazing!”
    Now that you’re clean
Only you know who the real ones are
    Cause you’ve seen
There’s only one question I want to ask
Is it healing when you hear
    Everyone said “You’re amazing!” ?
    Does anyone ask you?

I want you to always feel amazing (x 3)
    And I say you’re amazing!
    You’re amazing!

  37. (Chorus)
Here’s what it looks like (Looks like)
    Being the best
What it looks like, to be a cut above the rest

    By Avery Watts

Need I say more? If you run by me and my lips are moving (often without my ipod) THIS is the song that is playing in my head

  38. Well, I was going to say Dog Days are Over, but someone mentioned that, so I’ll add my favorite misunderstood lyric. For some reason, when I’m running and Britney Spears’ Stronger comes on, I hear (and occasionally sing) , “Stronger than yesterday,
    Now it’s nothing but a mile away.” I know that isn’t correct, but I don’t care 🙂 .

  39. This oyster is my world
    My oyster’s got a pearl
    This ain’t no dress rehearsal
    I’m a very lucky girl
    I’m on a roll

“I’m on a Roll” –Over the Rhine

    1. Tyler, great song. Along those lines, how about “Miles” by OTR?
      “….and miles to go
      and miles to go
and miles to go before we sleep.”

  40. Easy! “Survivor” by Destiny’s Child! You will be amazed at how quickly you can get up a hill with this song in your ear! “I’m a survivor. I’m not gon give up. I’m not gon stop. I’m gon work harder. I’m a survivor.”

  41. I second Florence and the Machine, dog days are over. I am 6 months post partum with #2 and running my first half in 2 weeks. Love the chorus.
    I also love MuteMath Spotlight

You got a whole lot left to say now
You knocked all your wind out
You just tried too hard and you froze
    I know, I know

And, silversun pickups panic switch is a fave to crank up the pace to.

What to say, what to say

  42. I loved reading about the game Dimity plays. Laughing because I feel like every time I hear a new song or am caught by a beat, I am very good at somehow grabbing onto some of the lyrics and making them about me running. So many……but he two I LOVE right now:

    1. “she’s gone, long gone!!!!” – She’s Long Gone byThe Black Keys
If you do not have this on your playlist – PLEASE ADD IT – it gets me so pumped!!

    2. ” Ah – You gotta Keep it Strong – Move along, move along like I know you do. Even when you r HOPE is gone, move along, move along just to make it through” -Move Along by the The All-American Rejects
Seriously How perfect is that??? Makes me so fired up that I want to go run!!

Music is so subjective – but I love when the words can inspire me!! Sadly though I have even found a way to let Justin Timberlake “Rock Your Body” keep me moving too? I guess I’m easy that way -haha!! So excited to use some of the songs that get your arms and legs moving!
    Happy Running Ladies

  43. Love Meilssa Etheridge’s “I Run for Life”. Also love “Don’t stop Me Now by Queen.” My current favorite though is

    “Hey Ho, Let’s GO!
    Hey Ho! Let’s Go!”

Blitzkrieg Bop by the Ramones. I am not a punk fan typically but this beat makes me kick it into gear big time.

  44. The dogs and cars in “Been Caught Stealing” by Jane’s Addiction get me running (away from the dogs and feeling like a race car).

But my favorite line right now is:
    “You sexy motherfucker!” (Prince)

  45. Sometimes I have a little love/hate relationship with running. Usually a few weeks before the race I am training for I will be so tired of running I’ll throw in the towel for a few days but then I’m back at it.

    We fight, we break up
    We kiss, we make up

    – Hot N Cold by Katy Perry.

  46. “I want to heal
    I want to feel
What I thought was never real
I want to let go of the pain I’ve held so long
(Erase all the pain til it’s gone)
    I want to heal
    I want to feel
Like I’m close to something real
I want to find something I’ve wanted all along
    Somewhere I belong”
    ~Somewhere I Belong~Linkin Park

  47. Jamiroquai – Canned Heat (Just replace all the references to “dance” with “run” like I do in my head.) lol
Dance, nothing left for me to do but dance,
All these bad times I’m going through just dance
Got canned heat in my heels tonight baby

I feel the thunder see the lightning
I know this anger’s heaven sent.
So I’ve got to hang out all my hang-ups
Because on the boogie I feel so hell bent
It’s just an instant gut reaction, that I got
I know I never ever felt like this before,
I dont know what to do
    But then that’s nothing new,
Stuck between hell and high water
I need a cure to make it through.

Hey- dance, yeah nothing left for me to do but dance
All these bad times I’m going through just dance,
Hey, got canned heat in my heels tonight baby
You I got canned heat in my heels

  48. I have few songs that get me going.

Like I’m Too Sexy by Right Said Fred, and I Want You to Want Me by Cheap Trick. No particular lyrics for either one; they just make me wanna move.

And, She Ain’t Your Ordinary Girl by Alabama – reminds me that I’m definitely no ordinary girl!

She don’t love carelessly that’s what I’ve always heard
‘Can’t use the usual lines she measures every word
No empty promises proof is what it takes to win her heart
The truth and nothing less, simple things that set her far apart
Save your diamonds and your furs she’s not your ordinary girl

She ain’t your ordinary, no she’s not
    She ain’t your ordinary girl
She ain’t your ordinary, oh no
    She ain’t your ordinary girl

No midnight alibis, no foolish games for her
And if you cross the line you’ll get what you deserve
But when you see her smile nothing seems to matter anymore
And in a little while you’ll feel like you’ve never felt before
Like no other in the world, she’s not your ordinary girl

and 5 o’clock 500 also by Alabama – I want, really, really badly, to drive a Nascar car (you can buy a Nascar driving experience) and I imagine myself driving wicked fast with this song. Crazy? Yes, but it passes the time and keeps my feet going.

It’s that five o’clock 500 and I run it every day
Pick up trucks, cars and buses all in my way
We’ve got Darrel, we’ve got Dale, Richard, Mark, Rusty and Jeff
Oh, the boss just dropped the green we’re on our way
    It’s that five o’clock 500 every day

Oh, Bubba’s runnin’ right on my bumper
Pushin’ me but there’s no where to go
Lane changin’ left and right, blowin’ horns and blinkin’ lights
Oh, the fast lane has never been so slow

    Fun stuff!

  49. “I hit the ground running, I hit the ground running after you” Hit the ground by Keith Urban

” think I’ll get outta here, where I can Run just as fast as I can To the middle of nowhere
To the middle of my frustrated fears” Just like a pill by Pink

  50. James Taylor
“Something in the Way She Moves”

There’s something in the way she moves,
Or looks my way, or calls my name,
That seems to leave this troubled world behind.

  51. 1) for trail runs:
arcade fire “no cars go” :

“We know a place where no planes go
We know a place where no ships go
    (Hey!) No cars go
    (Hey!) No cars go
    Where we know”

    2) when you need some pep in your step:
    jay-z “dirt off your shoulders”
“I’m a hustler homey, you a customer crony
Got some, dirt on my shoulder, could you brush it off for me?
    if you’re feelin’ like a pimp, ******, go and brush your shoulders off;
LADIES IS PIMPS, TOO, go and brush your shoulders off.”

    3) to remind me why i’m still running after an hour:
    muse “time is running out”
    “I wanted freedom
    bound and restricted
I tried to give you up
    but I’m addicted
now that you know I’m trapped sense of elation
    you’d never dream of
    breaking this fixation”

    4) for some female empowerment:
    no doubt “just a girl”
“take this pink ribbon off my eyes
i’m exposed and it’s no big surprise.
don’t you think i know exactly where i stand?
this world is forcing me to hold your hand!”

    5) to remind me to watch my form:
dizzee rascal “fix up, look sharp”
“Be serious you wouldn’t last an hour in my shoes
    It’s an Air-Force-One,
Trainers by the truck load, trainers by the ton,
Don’t feel dazed when I catch you by your jays,
Chump, best to act like Forrest Gump, best to run!”

    6) to get me in “my zone”:
    frou frou “let go”
    “so let go, jump in
    oh well, whatcha waiting for
    it’s alright
’cause there’s beauty in the breakdown
so let go, just get in
    oh, it’s so amazing here
    it’s alright
’cause there’s beauty in the breakdown”

    7) when i think of my hubby holding down the fort on my long runs
[disclaimer: it is taken COMPLETELY out of context!]:
gnarls barkley “gone daddy gone” (violent femmes cover)
    “beautiful girl, lovely dress
    (gone daddy gone)
fifteen smiles, oh yes [you better believe i sub “MILES” for smiles, even for a 6 miler!]
    (gone, daddy, gone)
    beautiful girl, lovely dress
    (gone daddy gone)
where she is now, i can only guess”

  52. Pretty much anything that Fergie is singing on because I think about how rockin’ her body is and it inspires me to keep going! (although I won’t ever have her body, lol!)

  53. You made the mistake and judge a man by his race
You go through life with egg on your face.

(Egg Man by The Beastie Boys)

This song always kicks it up for me and is totally not something I would usually listen to. But I love that line 🙂

  54. Widespread Panic’s “Travelin’ Light” is probably about airplane travel, but it applies for running:

Travelin’ Light, is the only way to fly
Travelin’ Light, just you and I
    Way on down to ecstasy
Way on down and our own way
Travelin’ Light, is the only way to fly

Travelin’ Light, and you can catch the wind
Travelin’ Light, better let your mind pretend
    Get on down to paradise
    Maybe once, now maybe twice
Travelin’ Light, is the only way to fly

  55. Good Vibrations by Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch. Love this song – it got me to the finish line of my first 5K!

Now the time has come for you to get up
The rest had you fed up but Yo, I won’t let up
On the rhythm and rhyme that’s designed to
Make your behind move to what I’m inclined to
Pure Hip Hop, no sell out
If you ain’t in it to win it
    Then get the hell out
    I command you to dance
    I wanna see motivation
Come on now feel the vibration

    It’s such a good vibration
Come on come on come on
    It’s such a sweet sensation
    Feel it feel it

    It’s such a good vibration
    It’s such a sweet sensation
    It’s such a good vibration
    It’s such a sweet sensation

  56. U2 – Where the streets have no name . . . mainly because I never remember what street I am on when I run through our neighborhood!

    I wanna run
    I want to hide
I wanna tear down the walls
    That hold me inside
    I wanna reach out
    And touch the flame
Where the streets have no name

    I want to feel
    Sunlight on my face
I see the dust cloud disappear
    Without a trace
I want to take shelter from the poison rain
Where the streets have no name

    1. I had no idea that the person beofr me picked the same song!! So, Another one for me is Get Back Up Again by Tobay Mac (A Christian Artist). Mainly, because I have had a bunch of injuries in the last year and I have to remember that “I may be knocked down, but not out forever”
You turned away when I looked you in the eye
And hesitated when I asked if you were alright
Seems like you’re fightin’ for your life
      But why, oh, why

Wide awake in the middle of your nightmare
You saw it comin’ but it hit you out of nowhere
And there’s always scars when you fall that far

We lose our way, we get back up again
It’s never too late to get back up again
And one day you gonna’ shine again
You may be knocked down, but not out forever

We lose our way, we get back up again
So get up, get up, you gonna’ shine again
It’s never too late to get back up again
You may be knocked down, but not out forever

You roll out of the dawning of the day
Heart racin’ as you made your little get away
It feels like you been runnin’ all your life
      But why, oh, why

So you pull away from the love that would’ve been there
And start believin’ that your situation’s unfair
But there’s always scars when you fall that far

This is love callin,’ love callin,’
Out to the broken this is love callin’
This is love callin,’ love callin,’
      I am so broken
This is love callin,’ love callin’

  57. A fabulous running song is Where the Streets Have No Name by U2.
    I want to run
    I want to hide
I want to tear down the walls that hold me inside
I want to reach out and touch the flame
Where the streets have no name

I want to feel sunlight on my face

  58. I do that too! I have compiled a “running” playlist and have selected all songs for the lyrics or lines that have something to do with running and/or motivation.

    I Ran (Flock of Seagulls)
Running Down a Dream (Tom Petty)
I Like to Move It (
    Living on the Edge (Aerosmith)
    Ready to Go (Republica)
    Run This Town (Jay-Z)
Hotel Aquarium (Falling Up) This song says… “Now I know that I’m alive…” and I love when this song hits as I crest a big hill! ;-0

  59. My favorite song to start a race is Pump It by the Black Eyed Peas.
People want to hate on us
    People be envious
And I know why they hatin on us
    Cause I’m so fabulous
    Nobody got nothin on us

  60. I start almost every run with “Where You Gonna Run” by Talib Kweli feat. Jean Grae (the intro makes me smile, no matter what distance I’m doing that day)
Where you gonna run? (not far)
Where you gonna run? (where you gonna go?)

Track workouts always start with “Circles” by Soul Coughing. Not very original, but it’s catchy
I don’t need to walk around in circles, walk around in circles, walk around in circles

Usually, whatever song I’m listening to at the moment feels like the exact right song for the moment. Runner’s delirium, maybe?

  61. “Look what I can do with my feet baby” – Chris Brown – Forever

Love this song! Makes me so proud at what I can do!

  62. From Pink’s – Just Like A Pill

I think I’ll get outta here, where I can
Run just as fast as I can
    To the middle of nowhere
To the middle of my frustrated fears

  63. The Warrior by Patty Smith

    Self explanitory..
But, the beginning is “You run run, run away…” and then of course “I am the warrior, well I am the warrior!” <— that's a goodie

I also love Eminem's Till I collapse (said above)

  64. “Let’s get it started!” – Black Eyed Peas
“These days it comes, it comes, it comes, it comes, it comes and goes” – Phoenix, Lisztomania

    And so many more…

  65. You better lose yourself in the music, the moment
You own it, you better never let it go
You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow
This opportunity comes once in a lifetime

So here I go is my shot.
Feet fail me not cause maybe the only opportunity that I got

You can do anything you set your mind to

    — Lose Yourself by Eminem

  66. “Ain’t about how fast I get there, ain’t about what’s waiting on the other side. It’s the climb, yeah!” Miley Cyrus.

  67. We are young
    We are strong
We’re not looking for where we belong

    We’re not cool
    We are free
And we’re running with blood on our knees

From Kick Ass by Mika vs RedOne

I try to avoid the blood, but this song gets me to speed up the pace.

  68. I like the song, Reason to Believe by Dashboard Confessional. It played on my playlist the last 1/2 mile of one of my 1/2 marathons, and the words were perfect! Here is a short exerpt:

Breathe, don’t you want to breathe?
I know that you are strong enough to handle what I need.
My capillaries scream there’s nothing left to feed on.
My body needs a reason to cross that line.
Would you carry me there one more time?

  69. Ahhh, I have a great one!

    Dog Days are Over
    By Florence and the Machine

“Run fast for your mother; run fast for your father /
Run for your children all your sisters and brothers /
Leave all your love and your longing behind.
You can’t carry it with you / if you want to survive ”

I actually ran my first half marathon a few weeks ago and used this song in the video I made for my friends…

    1. That video is awesome! And more so because I am training for my first half (it is in February-Disney Princess) and I am running it with a couple of girflriends. You made me so excited!

  70. Shake it like a poloroid picture!!! (totally not sure why that pumps me up, but it makes me wanna shake it while I run….and yes, hopefully the “shaking” will decrease with more running! he he)

  71. These 2 made the random cycle in my play list today.. seems to be a them CARs and RUNNING

Sheryl Crow – Real Gone soundtrack from cars
    Slow down, you’re gonna crash,
    Baby you’re a-screaming it’s a blast, blast, blast
Look out babe, you’ve got your blinders on
Everybody’s looking for a way to get real gone

Bruce Sprinsteen – Born to Run
In the day we sweat it out on the streets of a runaway American dream
At night we ride through the mansions of glory in suicide machines
Sprung from cages out on highway 9,
Chrome wheeled, fuel injected, and steppin’ out over the line
h-Oh, Baby this town rips the bones from your back
    It’s a death trap, it’s a suicide rap
We gotta get out while we’re young
`Cause tramps like us, baby we were born to run

  72. Goodness so many of my favs were already mentioned as well as a few I am going to have to add to my running list. Each year when I run the marathon I ask all my students as well my own kids for a favorite song. I get tons of great music I would not otherwise listen to…or know about. A few have become all time favorites.

    Its Your LIfe Francesca Batistelli
    This is the moment
    It’s on the line
    Which way you gonna fall?
    In the middle between
    Wrong and right
    But you know after all
    It’s your life
    What you gonna do?
    The world is watching you
Every day the choices you make
Say what you are and who
    Your heart beats for
    It’s an open door
    It’s your life

    Get Up by MaryMary
    Welcome to the rest
    Of your life
    From now on, just try
    To live more, want more
    Work a little harder
    Dance more, laugh more
    Be a little smarter
    Hug a little longer
    Love a little stronger
    You’ve been down
    But now it’s time to
    Get up
    ‘Cause you can’t stop
    Get up
    Got a lot to do

    Mariah Carey – 100 Percent
My life ain’t defined by limits
I Don’t need no permission to live it
I’m a break thru the door til I get in
Everything that I got I’m a give it
100 Percent and I ain’t stopping til I reach the finish

A Thousand Miles Vanessa Carlton, Keep Pushin’ Reo Speedwagon, What a Feelin’ Irene Cara, Through the Fire and Through the Flames DragonForce, Unstoppable Rascal Flatts, This is Your Life Switchfoot, Be Good To Yourself Journey, Push it Garbage, Dare you to Move Switchfoot…the list goes on for miles! I LOVE music! Thanks for asking! I got some more great tunes!

  73. Move Along by the All American Rejects:

When all you got to keep is strong
Move along, move along like I know ya do
And even when your hope is gone
Move along, move along just to make it through

  74. “It’s, not, how you start, it’s how you finish,
And it’s, not, where you’re from, it’s where you’re at.”
from Ali in the Jungle by The Hours.

I love this song; it’s always a good way to get me started running on one of those tough days.

  75. I have a few…

    Flawless, by George Michael –
Whenever I hear these lyrics it reminds me how glad I am I got off my butt and went running, because, as George sings..

“And it’s no good waiting by the window
It’s no good waiting for the sun
Please believe me, the things you dream of
They don’t fall in the laps of no-one”

Also, he keeps singing in your ear that you are Flawless and Beautiful, how can that be bad??! Note: He does use the F word in the song!

Has an awesome running beat too, very motivating song!

  76. “So here I go, it’s my shot
    Feet fail me not
This may be the only opportunity that I got.” – Lose Yourself, Eminem

    “You’ve crossed the finish line
Won the race but lost your mind
Was it worth it, after all? – Superman, Lazlo Bane (I’ve never won a race, but have won a few age group awards, and they were TOTALLY worth it!)

    “Cause we belong together now
    Forever united here somehow
You got a piece of me
    And honestly,
My life would suck without you” – My Life Would Suck Without You, Kelly Clarkson

  77. I’ll have to check out some of the songs people are posting – I definitely need a playlist update. Some of my favorites have been mentioned above: Fighter by Christina Aguilera, Lose Yourself by Eminem, Beautiful Day by U2. Two from Glee: Bust It (not because of the lyrics but because it makes me laugh) and Don’t Stop Believin’ (Journey must be so happy – lyrics: Don’t stop believin’/hold on to the feelin’/streetlights people (great on a 5:30am run)). I also love Here It Goes Again by Ok Go (Lyric: Oh, here it goes, here it goes, here it goes again) as I tend to grab one line of a song and repeat it over and over — also the song makes me think of the video where the band is ‘dancing’ on treadmills (makes treadmills look fun even though I think differently). But I must admit that my absolute favorite thing to listen to while running are audiobooks – they totally motivate me to get going because I have to know what is going to happen (just finished ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ and am about to start the third book in the Hunger Games trilogy).

  78. “you say I’m crazy.
    I got your crazy.”

from “womanizer” by the fascinating britney s.

these words make me smile every time. people think we are crazy for running, and then, there I am, showing the world that they don’t even know the half of it. and I run faster, just to prove how “crazy” I am.

  79. Lyrics really help get me through a tough run. The one that has the most lately is Eminem “Lose Yourself” (not my typical choice for music for my listening pleasure but it is super inspiring to run to.)

You better lose yourself in the music, the moment
You own it, you better never let it go
You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow
This opportunity comes once in a lifetime

LOVE IT! Sometimes listen to it multiple times per run. 🙂

  80. C+C Music Factory’s “Gonna Make You Sweat” Get’s me pumped up in the middle of a tough run.

Left to right (groove) work me all night
Come on let’s sweat (sweat sweat) baby
Let the music take control (control control)
    Let the rhythm move you
    Sweat (sweat sweat) sweat
Let the music take your soul (soul soul)
    Let the rhythm move you
    Everybody dance now

“Runnin’ Down A Dream” by Tom Petty gets me moving, especially if I’ve recently changed my route.

Yeah runnin’ down a dream that never would come to me.
Workin’ on a mystersy, goin’ wherever it leads

And finally, b/c running de-stresses me:
    “I’m Not Afraid” Eminem
But it’s time to exercise these demons
These motherf*%$rs are doing jumping jacks now! (and then of course the chorus)

  81. Focusing on lyrics really gets me through the hard runs sometimes. The one I’ve found that is working for me best lately is Lose Yourself – Eminem (not typically my fav music… but I love this song to run to …. I find it SO motivating….)

You better lose yourself in the music, the moment
You own it, you better never let it go
You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow
This opportunity comes once in a lifetime

I would love a chance for good earbuds. I need some… mine stink. 🙁

If anyone is interested in any additional good running songs I post a “song that kept me running” to my blog every week 🙂 ….

  82. “You Gotta Be” by Des’ree

You gotta be bad, you gotta be bold
You gotta be wiser, you gotta be hard
You gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger
You gotta be cool, you gotta be calm
    You gotta stay together

  83. Evanescense is one of my favorite groups to listen to when running… especially when I need a burst or second wind. Here are some great lines I like from “Bring me to Life”

Wake me up inside, call my name and save me from the dark (usually dark in the morning when I run, and I can use a wake up, which running does for me)

bid my blood to run, before I come undone (running keeps me sane)

  84. You know I know how
To make em stop and stare as I zone out
The club can’t even handle me right now
Watchin you I’m watchin you we go all out
The club can’t even handle me right now

Club Can’t Even Handle Me by Flo Rida. I like the beat a lot, but then the idea of the stop and stare as I zone out is pretty right on about me and my running. I am a high school teacher and my students are always amazed when they see me out running in our super small town and every time I see one of them I run a little faster to boost my ego.

  85. I say this to almost anyone who asks now, but Eye of the Tiger by Survivor is the best inspirational song, haha. It’s probably just me.

Risin’ up, back on the street
Did my time, took my chances
Went the distance, now I’m back on my feet
Just a man and his will to survive
Face to face, out in the heat
    Hangin’ tough, stayin’ hungry
They stack the odds ’til we take to the street
For we kill with the skill to survive
Went the distance, now I’m not gonna stop

The whole song for me, really. The other day, a couple miles into a run where I had been dragging so far, I suddenly started to feel really good. I wasn’t sure if I got the second wind I hear so much about or if it was because Eye of the Tiger happened to come on.

  86. Noticed “Don’t Stop Me Now” was already posted- smart women!- so is other lyrical fave:

    I run for hope
    I run to feel
    I run for the truth
    For all that is real
I run for your mother, your sister, your wife
I run for you and me, my friend
    I run for life

“I Run For Life”, Melisaa Ethridge- it’s slower but the lyrics are unparalleled. First time I heard it, I cried on the treadmill.

  87. I’m a shooting star leaping through the sky
Like a tiger defying the laws of gravity
I’m a racing car passing by like Lady Godiva
I’m gonna go go go there’s no stopping me
I’m burning through the sky yea
Two hundred degrees that’s why they call me Mr. Fahrenheit
I’m travelling at the speed of light
I wanna make a supersonic (wo)man of you

    Don’t stop me now
I’m having such a good time
    I’m having a ball!

    “Don’t Stop Me Now”, Queen

  88. [Chorus:]
    Lace up your shoes
    A O A O O
    Here’s how we do

    Run baby run
    Don’t ever look back
They’ll tear us apart if you give them the chance
Don’t sell your heart, don’t say we’re not meant to be
Run baby run, forever will be
    You and me

Check Yes Juliet, We The Kings

  89. “Show me, show me, show me how you do that thing; the one that makes me scream, she said. The one that makes me laugh, she said, and threw her arms around my neck. Show me how you do it, and I promise you, I promise that I’ll run away with you. I’ll run away with you.”

    The Cure
    Just like Heaven

  90. “Today is My Day”—Evan Milby

    Hello Sunshine, goodbye cloudy day.
Woke up feeling things are going my way.
I’ve been tired for too long
    Singing poor me songs
but I feel a change, so hold back the rain.

Today is my day and I’m living strong.
Stop and smell the roses, sing a happy song.
Living in the moment cuz it won’t last for long.
So come on–come on before it’s gone.

Today is my day—I’m not looking back.
Not looking ahead, but I”m right on track.
Leaving my mark before it slips away
    Cuz today is my day.

  91. +1 Amy Johnson.

Also, Cake, The Distance (whole song really, but this line especially:)

The arena is empty, except for one man
Still driving and striving as fast as he can.
The sun has gone down and the moon has come up
And long ago somebody left with the cup.

  92. Mary J. Blige has been one of my go to artists for a long time (bad break up anyone?) but her song, “Work That” never fails me
    Theres so many-a girls
    I hear you been running
    From the beautiful queen
    That you could be becoming
You can look at my palm
    And see the storm coming
Read the book of my life
    And see I’ve overcome it
Just because the length of your hair ain’t long
And they often criticize you for your skin tone
    Wanna hold your head high
    Cause you’re a pretty woman
    Get your runway stride home
    And keep going
    Girl live ya life

  93. “Do what they say can’t be done while you’re still young”
and another line from that song:
“You can’t turn the clock back around on what your dreaming about you better do it now don’t wait”

Montgomery Gentry “While You’re Still Young” I love all music but this song is one of my favorites right now!

  94. I LOVE this thread! Definitely going to add some new songs to my playlist.

My absolute, favorite, most inspiring running song is Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run”.

“We gotta get out while were young
`cause tramps like us, baby we were born to run”

    Other favorites:

“It’s a beautiful day, don’t let it get away” – Beautiful Day by U2

“Body movin’, gotta keep your body movin'” – Body Movin’ by Beastie Boys

“Look, if you had one shot, or one opportunity
To seize everything you ever wanted-One moment
Would you capture it or just let it slip?” – Lose Yourself by Eminem

  95. “Fat bottomed girls, you make the rockin’ road go ’round.”

Even though I have a fat bottom, I am not offended. I love the beat, and the levity of the song. Just hope no one can hear me belt it out on my last mile!

  96. “I get knocked down but I get up again” from Chumbawamba’s Tubthumping

I feel like injuries keep knocking my training back but each time I cross train, heal up, and keep going!

  97. There’s a big, a big hard sun, beating on the big people in a big hard world (from Eddie Vedder’s Hard Sun on the Into the Wild soundtrack)

  98. “Weightless” by All Time Low
I wanna feel weightless, and that should be enough.
I’m stuck in this f**king rut, waiting on a second hand pick me up and I’m over, getting older
If I could just find the time, I would never let another day go by, I’m over, getting old
Maybe it’s not my weekend, but it’s gonna be my year.
I’m so sick of watching while the minutes pass as I go nowhere
And this is my reaction to everything I feel
    ‘Cuz something’s going crazy
I don’t want to waste another minute here.

  99. “It’s My Life, It’s Now or Never. I Ain’t Gonna Live Forever! I Just Wanna Live While I’m Alive!” It’s My Life by Bon Jovi

“Let’s do it. Let’s do it. Let’s do it.” I Gotta Feeling by Black Eyed Peas

“Cause I live and breathe this Philadelphia Freedom” Philadelphia Freedom by Elton John

” I can see a new horizon. Underneath the Blazing Sky. I’ll Be Where the Eagle’s Flying Higher and Higher…….I can Climb the Highest Mountain. Cross the Widest Sea.” St. Elmo’s Fire by John Parr

Smooth by Santana (not for the lyrics just great music)
“Walking on Sunshine. I feel alive. I feel a love. I feel a love that really real.” Walking on Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves

“Let’s Get It Started in Here” Let’s Get It Started by the B.E.P. (pretty much anything by the Peas)

  100. The highway’s jammed with broken heroes on a last chance power drive
Everybody’s out on the run tonight and there’s no place left to hide
    — Bruce Springsteen

  101. Twisted Sister “We’re Not Gonna Take It”

“Oh We’re Not Gonna Take It
no, We Ain’t Gonna Take It
oh We’re Not Gonna Take It Anymore”

Sometimes it is my brain talking to my legs, other times it is my legs talking to my brain…

  102. ‘Cause sometimes you feel tired,
feel weak, and when you feel weak, you feel like you wanna just give up.
But you gotta search within you, you gotta find that inner strength
and just pull that shit out of you and get that motivation to not give up
and not be a quitter, no matter how bad you wanna just fall flat on your face and collapse.’

Eminem- ‘Till I Collapse” Gets me going every time.

  103. Not being a serious runner with music, the only lyric that I can come up with that I actually know the artists is a one hit wonder:
    “and I raaaaaan, I ran so far away-ay-ay, I couldn’t get away.”
    Flock of Seagulls.

  104. I was silent…then realized I play that game and didn’t know I was doing it. There are lines that power me up hills and remind me why I run — they go through my head even when I run without my iPod.

Two that came immediately to mind for me right now:

    1) “Don’t you ever consider giving up, you will find, ooh, it’s a beautiful life” – It’s a Beautiful Life, Ace of Base

    2) “When I get older, I will be stronger” — Wavin’ Flag, K’naan

    1. I LOVE K’naan. I saw him perform 6/09 and I want him to go great places. I put the whole album on my playlist for my half marathon last week and it really kept me pumped. 🙂

  105. The one I’m obsessed with now is Melissa Etheridge’s “I Run for Life.”

“I run for hope, I run to feel, I run for the truth and all that is real. I run for your mother, your sister, your wife. I run for you and me, my friend. I run for life.”

    Gets me. Every time.

  106. “Life ain’t a track meet, it’s a Marathon” Ice Cube
(as tattooed on my foot) it reminds me that you can’t always expect things to be easy

“Got my dreams, got my life, got my love, got my friends, got the sunshine above. Why am I making this hard on myself when there are so many beautiful reasons I have to be happy?” I like the Meleni Smith version but it has also been done by Natasha Beddingfield
this one is a good reminder that even when the road is long and hard, I should find joy in it – after all, isn’t that why we run?

  107. I have so many…but the first one that came to mind was:

‘it’s getting harder and harder to breathe…huh, huh, huh’ Maroon 5

Seems like an odd choice but the song is so cool and those lyrics always make me check in with my breathing to make sure I’m not breathing too hard!

My least favorite during a run: Meet Me Halfway by Black Eyed Peas. I thought it would be the perfect halfway mark song. Um, no. Not so fun to listen to Fergie say ‘I can’t go any further than this’ when you are thinking the same thing! 😉

  108. It’s more the tone and rhythm of a song that pushes me rather than specific lyrics. I have several P!ink selections, (“So, so what! I’m still a rockstar! I got my rock moves,..!” ), I love “Defying Gravity, from Wicked (“…and nobody in all of OZ, no wizard that there is or was, is ever going to bring me down!”)

Hey, this is making me want to run! Too bad we’re right in the middle of our school day…

  109. My go-to warm up song is “Taking Chances.” I like the Glee Version or the Celine Dion version.

“What do you say to taking chances
What do you say to jumping off the edge
Never knowing if there’s solid ground below
    Or hand to hold…”

  110. Oh, can we pick more than one? Every play mix I have has Alicia Keyes, Superwoman: “’Cause I am a Superwoman, Yes, I am, Yes, she is. Still when I’m a mess, I still put on my vest, with an S on my chest. Oh, yes, I’m Superwoman.” It’s old, but I haven’t tired of it yet.
Sometimes, it’s the PCD’s song, I Hate This Part. And I have to stop myself from singing it out loud….. “I can’t take it any longer, thought that we were stronger…. but I gotta do it, I gotta do it, I hate this part right here, but I gotta do it …”
But this morning it was P!nk, “Bad Influence”: “Wind me and watch me go, where she’ll stop nobody knows…..” Except I had to get home and get ready for work…..

  111. Beautiful Day by U2:

    “It’s a beautiful day
    Sky falls, you feel like
    It’s a beautiful day
    Don’t let it get away

    You’re on the road
But you’ve got no destination …..”

  112. “You deserve the best in life
So if the time isn’t right then move on
    Second best is never enough
You’ll do much better baby on your own…”

    “Express Yourself” by Madonna

  113. Linkin Park – “ONE STEP CLOSER” – the title says it all

or “POINTS OF AUTHORITY” – there’s a line that says “you can’t run the race, the pace is too great”. I hear that and it makes me think – OH YES I CAN!

  114. Well, this won’t win me any giveaways but it’s true.

I don’t run with music at least I haven’t in years! Until my littlest became a bit uninterested in being in the jogging stroller (He wants to run with me! yeah! I’ve prayed for one of the kids to take an interest but I just need him to get a bit older ~ he’s two.). Back to my point, my jogging stroller has a built in stereo system that you plug an MP3 player into. So I have been running (when neccessary) with Veggie Tales. Yep. Veggie Tales. Their songs are quite catchy. And I can sing almost all of them by heart now. Ones that get me moving, Do The Moo Shoo, very peppy. Or Keep Walking. Another great one.

Well, it’s not for everyone but when you are a running mom you have to involve your kids in whatever ways you can. And besides, these songs have some of the best lesson filled lyrics that I’ve heard in a long time!

Sometimes motivation goes not from the tempo of the song but from the message within.

  115. Dr. Dre/Snoop “Still DRE”

It isn’t really the lyrics for this one- This was the song playing (on my WALKMAN) on a beautiful morning in Boulder, Co- 2002– on the Boulder Creek/Canyon trail…..

This is the song that was playing when a man who had flashed me earlier in the run as I was going up (and he was walking down) jumped out from behind that little tunnel that goes under the road near the rock climbing area and tried to grab me.

This Dr Dre song playing on a mix tape on my little yellow walkman was the soundtrack to my escape…and I ran probably the fastest I’ve ever run in my life. Dr. Dre and Snoop are forever my “protectors” their voices and beats comfort me to this day.

And the bad guy? I ran right to the sheriff’s station- got them on it- and they couldn’t find him.
Next day I went to the Boulder Public Library and saw him at a computer! I ran into the library office, called the police and they came and got him.

so.. not the lyrics really but the song that empowers me not to be a victim but a strong fast runner 8 years later. I wonder what Dr. Dre and ‘ol Snoop would think of this… they hopefully would be very flattered.

“Oh for sure, check me out
    It’s still Dre Day, A.K.
Before I chrome the lot, can’t keep it home a lot
’cause when I frequent the spots that I’m known to rock
You hear the bass from the trunk when I’m on the block
Ladies, they pay homage, but haters say Dre fell off
How? My last album was “The Chronic”
They want to know if he still got it
They say rap’s changed, they want to know how I feel about it”

    1. OMG, this is a crazy story. I work at Boulder Public. We do get some creepies in here sometimes, and I run that trail all the time. I know exactly where you were! Shudder. Glad you escaped and that he didn’t get away in the end.

      1. I didn’t want to make my story too long, Terza, but since you work there… imagine me going up the stairs to where the computers are (or were, haven’t been there in years) and people are standing up at the computer terminals checking email, etc.. and how did I see him? I sat down right behind him- noticed the same camoflauage pants and looked like he’d been out in the rain all night.. and yup when I walked around to peek at him- it was him. The librarian was very cool in helping me make the call to the police. They chased him down the back stairs of the library from the top floor.

  116. This Year by The Mountain Goats-added to my NWM playlist by a friend who knows me well:
I broke free on a Saturday morning
I put the pedal to the floor
    headed north on mills avenue
and listened to the engine roar

    my broken house behind me
    and good things ahead
    a girl named Cathy
wants a little of my time
    six cylinders underneath the hood
    crashing and kicking
    listen to the engine whine

i am going to make it through this year
    if it kills me
i am going to make it though this year
    if it kills me

  117. From “The Warrior” by Disturbed:

    Come on bring it
    Don’t sing it
    Better believe it
Broken down till your hope has died
Beat down till victory is mine
Stand up and show me some pride
    And now, are you ready?

  118. This one is all about the zone where I stop trying to run with my mind and just run with my body:

I remember when, I remember, I remember when I lost my mind
There was something so pleasant about that place.
Even your emotions had an echo
In so much space – “Crazy” by Gnarls Barkley

And this one just makes me dig in a kicka$s way:

I am extraordinary, if you’d ever get to know me
I am extraordinary, I am just your ordinary
    Average every day sane psycho
    Average every day sane psycho
Supergoddess – “Extraordinary” by Liz Phair

  119. Oh, I totally play that game! I can think of a few from my current running playlist . . .

“Pace yourself for me”, The Killers — Somebody Told Me

“Look what I can do with my feet” Chris Brown — Forever

“A girl can do what she wants to do and that’s what I’m gonna do”, Joan Jett — Bad Reputation

And of course, pretty much the entire Daft Punk song “Harder Better Faster Stronger”

    Work It
    Make It
    Do It
    Makes Us
    More Than
    Work is

Work It Harder Make It Better
Do It Faster, Makes Us stronger
    More Than Ever Hour After
    Our Work Is Never Over

  120. Cage the Elephant…

Oh, there ain’t no rest for the wicked,
    Money don’t grow on trees.
    I got bills to pay,
    I got mouths to feed,
There ain’t nothing in this world for free.
    I know I can’t slow down,
    I can’t hold back,
Though you know, I wish I could.
No there ain’t no rest for the wicked,
Until we close our eyes for good

  121. Two by Tom Petty:

From “You Wreak Me” (great beat on this song):
    Now and again
    I get the feeling
    Well, if I don’t win
    I a-gonna break even……
    Run with me!
    Wherever I go!

From “Big Weekend”: (also a great beat; want the last line on a T-shirt)
    I need a big weekend
    Kick up some dust
    I need a big weekend
If you don’t run, you rust.

From “For What You Dream Of” (Trainspotting soundtrack):
you’re losing your mind but that’s ok
you’re locked in the groove, throw the keys away
    the hall of dangers
    the power in love
you’ll walk through fire for what you dream of

  122. Freddie Jones Band – Take The Time

Where the hell are you runnin’ to?
Try and find yourself a life
Look at yourself, you’re standing still
Night can cut you like a knife

There’s no doubt left in this world
So think you and you still fly
Take the time to look in front of you
It’s a matter of your mind

Heather Small – Biggest Loser Theme

What have you done today to make you feel proud?
It’s never too late to try
What have you done today to make you feel proud?
You could be so many people
If you make that break for freedom
What have you done today to make you feel proud?

  123. Chris Tomlin…”Holy Is the Lord”

“We stand and lift up our hands
For the joy of the Lord is our strength”

“The joy of the Lord is my strength” reminds me that I can do anything!

HSM “Get your head in the game…” FOCUS FOCUS FOCUS

  124. “Hold on to your hat, hold on to your heart
Ready get set to tear this place apart
Don’t need a ticket, only place in town
That will take you up to heaveN and never bring you down
    Anything goes! Anything goes!
    Rock! Rock! ’til you drop.
Rock! Rock! never stop!” – Def Leppard.

Hands down, best lyrics for my running.

  125. Party in the USA – ok maybe my running isn’t like a party but I love this song when I run.

move b**ch get out the way – just kidding! But I’m sure those running behind me thought that a time or two 😀

  126. Beyonce “Get Me Bodied”

A little sweat aint never hurt nobody
While ya’ll standin on the wall
I’m the one tonight gettin bodied

    Gettin Bodied
    Gettin Bodied
    Getting Bodied

    Ya want my body!

At 169 BPM this song keeps me going.

  127. I do that ALL the time. Sometimes the fate of a long run rests on my iPod somehow delivering the right songs at the right exact moments.

When I first started training for my marathon (not long now!), it was this lyric from Pink: “So what? I’m still a rockstar.” Because I’m not fast but so what?

This one from Eminem (Love the Way You Lie) during a particular challenging long run early in my training:
    Cause when it’s going good
    It’s going great
    I’m Superman
With the wind in his bag
    But when it’s bad
    It’s awful

And this one from Scissor Sisters “I Don’t Feel Like Dancing” at mile 17 of my 20-miler (the timing made me laugh because my legs were tired!):
But I don’t feel like dancin’
    When the old Joanna plays
My heart could take a chance
But my two feet can’t find a way
You’d think that I could muster up a little soft-shoe gentle sway
But I don’t feel like dancin’
    No sir, no dancin’ today.

  128. “Never let your mark erase
‘Cause broken legs can be replaced
Two steps to the finish line
Three sips ’til I finish mine”
    -Matt & Kim (Lessons Learned)

  129. Jully Black – Running

Everytime I hear this on the radio when I am at work I want to run around a little :o)

    So get ready I’m running
Yes I’m running for the right now
Can’t stop me ’cause I’m running (Running)
Yes I’m running for the fight now
Won’t stop me ’cause I’m running (I’m running)
    Hey, hey, hey…
Can’t stop me ’cause I’m running (Running)
    Hey, hey, hey…
Won’t stop me ’cause I’m running

If you have not heard this tune, check it out, she is a cool Canadian singer.

I also think the Jann Arden is awesome! Great Canadian girl she is! I love to wail to everything she sings.

One more killer lyric “I’m pretty good at drinking beer” ~By Billy Currington :o)

  130. I do this too!!! LOL at the Seven jeans idea-funny but would be a great idea…..
“Time goes by so slowly….” Hung Up Madonna love the beat but sometimes this drives me crazy
“It’s getting hot in here” Usher this kills me in the heat of summer!
“Yo sound the bell, school’s in sucka” MC Hammer Can’t Touch This-when I’m in the groove 🙂
“Now your messin w/a SOB” Nazareth Hair of the Dog awesome-this once actually came on as a huge dog was running towards me full bore teeth bared!!! A little inspiration when I needed it most!

  131. Stayin’ alive.
    Stayin’ alive.
    Ah, ha, ha, ha,
    Stayin’ alive.
Well now, I get low and I get high
And if I can’t get either I really try.
Got the wings of heaven on my shoes
    I’m a dancin’ man and I just can’t lose.

. . . Staying Alive by the BeeGees.

The other day when it was really windy it was Bob Segar

    Against the wind
I’m still runnin’ against the wind
I’m older now but still runnin’ against the wind
Well I’m older now and still runnin’
    Against the wind

  132. “I wear my sunglasses at night” by Corey Hart…..becuase I ALWAYS wear sunglasses when I run. I am considering clear ones for winter, because I wear contacts and hate it when the wind blows right in my eyes……

  133. Lately, the song lyrics that describe my running would have to be Duncan SHeik’s barely Breathing:

    Cuz I am barely breathing
And I can’t find the air!

Been pushing myself REALLY hard lately!!

  134. It’s nice to see Jann Arden get some love south of the border. Her Canadian fans have long loved her. (Try to see her in concert if you can. In addition to having a breathtaking voice, she puts most stand-up comics to shame.)

In the Canadian theme, I vote for Neil Young’s “Long May You Run”. It’s nice as a cool down, but also serves as a gentle warm up.

  135. According to You, by Orianthi!!!! I LOVE this song:

“According to you, I’m stupid, useless, can’t do anything right….

But according to him, I’m beautiful, incredible, he can’t get me out of his head,
according to him, I’m stunning, irresistible, everything he’s ever wanted!”

Not exactly fitting of my life situation right now, thankfully! But it used to be, and it has a GREAT cadence for running.

  136. I have two:

    Beginning of a long run:
“I’m on the road to nowhere” Talking Heads

Last 3 miles of a long run:
“I’m going home” from “Two of us” Beatles

  137. U Cant Touch This, by MC Hammer. I listen to the Glee version tho.

So wave your hands in the air
    Bust a few moves
run your fingers through your hair

This is it for a winner
Dance to this and you’re gonna get thinner
    Move slide your rump
Just for a minute let’s all do the bump
    Bump bump bump yeah

    U can’t touch this
Look man u can’t touch this

  138. Wow, there are so many songs. But the one song every time I hear it , it gives me goose bumps. Not a very high beat song but one that gives me motivation to run.
The Climb by Hannah Montana/ Miley Cyrus
Here are a few lyrics cut from the song-

    I can almost see it
    That dream I am dreaming
But there’s a voice inside my head saying
    “You’ll never reach it”

Ain’t about how fast I get there
Ain’t about what’s waiting on the other side
    It’s the climb

    The struggles I’m facing
    The chances I’m taking
    Sometimes might knock me down
    But no, I’m not breaking

    I may not know it
But these are the moments that
    I’m gonna remember most, yeah
    Just gotta keep going

And I, I got to be strong
    Just keep pushing on

    Keep on moving, keep climbing
    Keep the faith, baby
It’s all about, it’s all about the climb
Keep the faith, keep your faith, whoa

  139. Your gonna fall behind me
Your gonna cry and beg for mercy
    Cause your not ready baby
And you got nothing on me- “Fall Behind Me” -The Donnas

(I’m not as fast as I’d like to be, but this song makes me feel faster!)

  140. Oooo, I like this game! Here are some from the playlist I used for my recent (first!) 10K:

Ain’t Goin’ Down Til the Sun Comes Up – Garth Brooks
“One o’clock that truck is rocking
Two is coming, still no stopping
Break to check the clock at three
They’re right on where they want to be”

    Survivor – Destiny’s Child
    “I’m a survivor
    I’m not gonna give up
    I’m not gonna stop
    I’m gonna work harder”

    Fighter – Christina Aguilera
“I wouldn’t know just how capable I am to pull through
So I wanna say thank you
‘Cause it makes me that much stronger
Makes me work a little bit harder
It makes me that much wiser
So thanks for making me a fighter”

Let’s Get it Started – Black Eyed Peas
“Let’s Get It Started, in here…
And the base keep runnin’ runnin’, and runnin’ runnin’, and runnin’ runnin’, and runnin’ runnin’, and runnin’ runnin’, and runnin’ runnin’, and runnin’ runnin’, and runnin’ runnin'”

Ordinary Day – Great Big Sea (always reminds me to look around, enjoy the beautiful setting and the beautiful day, and appreciate my body being healthy and capable)
“I’ve got a smile on my face, I’ve got four walls around me
I got the sun in the sky, the water surrounds me, oh-oh
I’ll win now but sometimes I’ll lose
I’ve been battered, but I’ll never bruise, it’s not so bad
And I say way-hey-hey, it’s just an ordinary day
and it’s all your state of mind
At the end of the day, you’ve just got to say,
    it’s all right’

This is my favorite I think… I always picture my stress pouring out through my feet as I hear this. And I can’t pass up a chance to put in a plug for an awesome Canadian artist. This is one of my favorite songs to run to, period:
    Anybody Listening – Classified
“live this like its an addiction,
    Spit this whether anybody listens,
I dont know if you really hearin’ me,
but these lyrics seem to be my therapy,
    Guarenteed, i hear the beat,
    My stress gets realeased,
till i feel the peace, “

  141. This is ten percent luck, twenty percent skill
Fifteen percent concentrated power of will
Five percent pleasure, fifty percent pain
And a hundred percent reason to remember the name!

    Remember the Name: Fort Minor

LOOOOOVE this song!!! Totally pumps me up every time I hear it.

  142. Ooo! I have a bunch, but the one that’s resonating with me right now is from “L.E.S. Artists” by Santigold:

I can say I hope it will be worth what I give up
If I could stand up mean for the things that I believe

… and then later in the song …

    Change, change, change
I want to get up out of my skin
Tell you what, if I can shake it I’m a make this
    Something worth dreaming of

  143. “One Girl Revolution” by Superchic(k)

Some people see the revolution but most only see the girl
I can lose my hard earned freedom if my fear defines my world
I declare my independence from the critics and their stones
I can find my revolution I can learn to stand alone…

And I’ll be everything that I want to be
    I am confidence in insecurity
I am a voice yet waiting to be heard
I’ll shoot the shot, bang, that you hear round the world…

And I’m a one girl revolution

  144. Cause sometimes you feel tired,
feel weak, and when you feel weak, you feel like you wanna just give up.
But you gotta search within you, you gotta find that inner strength
and just pull that shit out of you and get that motivation to not give up
and not be a quitter, no matter how bad you wanna just fall flat on your face and collapse.

    Eminem Till I Collapse

It is my go to song when I need a lift running!

  145. “And nobody in all of Oz, no Wizard that there is or was, is ever gonna bring me down.” (Defying Gravity from the musical “Wicked”).

“Oh, we’re half way there…” (Livin’ on a Prayer)

“Ba da dum dum, ba da dummm” (Okay, it’s the theme from Indiana Jones and there are no lyrics but it is UBER-inspiring!)

    1. Love Wicked! I got into the music thanks to my sister in law, but I haven’t actually seen the play. I just read the book and we compared notes and they are totally different! Anyway, that’s beside the point. I just wanted to say that “Defying Gravity” is one of my power songs. 🙂

  146. Definitely Stronger by Kanye West is up there with great motivational lyrics. An oldie I can’t give up is Limp Bizkit’s Rollin (“Keep rollin, rollin , rollin. Keep rollin, rollin, rollin”).

  147. Two of my favorites (both pretty literal but they get me going every time):

    1) “Don’t Stop Me Now!” by Queen

    Don’t stop me now
I’m having such a good time
    I’m having a ball

I’m gonna go go go there’s no stopping me

I’m travelling at the speed of light

    2) “Reason to Believe” by Dashboard Confessional. Could literally use the whole song but here’s a particularly good excerpt:

I have reason to believe that I have victories to taste.
I can feel them on my teeth, upon my lips, and in my chest.
I can roll them on my tongue.
They are more subtle than defeat.
I feel the tension in my lungs,
And every move is fueled by my resolve to…

Breathe, don’t you want to breathe?
I know that you are strong enough to handle what I need.
My capillaries scream there’s nothing left to feed on.
My body needs a reason to cross that line.
Would you carry me there one more time?

  148. “Who’s Gonna Run this town tonight, we gonna run this town tonight” –
Who’s gonna run this town by Jay Z and Rhianna…

Powered me up one of many killer hills last weekend…

has anyone else seen footage of Jerry O’Connell when he is out for a run, he seriously jams out, singing the whole time (obviously not running hard enough), makes it look fun anyway… And there is my TMZ confession for the day….

    1. I sometimes mouth the words to a really great song while I’m running. The path I run is heavily trafficked so sometimes people see me doing it but I can’t stop myself!

    2. Sadly he is not shirtless… At least not that I’ve seen… : ) I made myself sing out loud at a race last weekend just to get my mind off the horrid hill I was climbing… Love it..
