Talking Perimenopause: A Six-Week Salon, Summer 2023

BEST FOR: Women who are in perimenopause, or women in their 40s
PREREQS: None
NUMBER OF WEEKS: 6; June 5 – July 16, 2023

A random Tuesday morning, and I (Dimity) was floundering. “I kinda feel like I’m losing my mind these days,” I text a friend who works in healthcare. “This perimenopause thing is no joke.” Despite living a healthy lifestyle—eating my veggies, exercising most days, meditating somewhat regularly, etc.—and owning a dog-eared copy of The Menopause Manifesto, both my body and mind were not the familiar friends I’d inhabited the previous 48 years. My mood scraped the bottom most days; my sleep felt jagged; my memory had gaping, frustrating holes; and I felt like I had zero control over anything.

If you’re in your 40s, you may very well know what I’m talking about. (And for that, I’m sorry. It sucks.) Yes, it’s easy to chuckle with a friend about having to get up in the night to change your shirt, soaked with sweat like you just ran three tempo miles: It’s good bonding, right? That said, the whole perimenopause situation—hot flashes that stem from hormone fluctuations, which also contribute to poor sleep, unexpected weight gain, a cloudy mind, and other symptoms like anxiety, depression bloating, and constipation—are far from laughable.

It can bring you to tears on a daily (hourly?) basis, and make you feel like you are, in fact, losing your mind.

Which is why we created Talking Perimenopause: a Six-Week Salon. No, we aren’t going to “fix” your perimenopause in six weeks, but we are here to help you understand what is happening to your body, in real, accessible terms. We offer doable ideas and ways to ease symptoms. We answer all your questions, and call in experts to give a deep, helpful dive into multi-level topics like exercise and hormone replacement therapy. We have enlightening conversations that provide both validation for your symptoms and offer important group connection.

Along the way, we teach you to grow broccoli sprouts; define the (important) difference between estrogen, xeno-estrogens, and phytoestrogens; help you figure out if hormone therapy is a good individual call for you; remind you of the value of throwing some weight around; and, of course, make sure to laugh regularly.

At the end of six weeks, you’ll not only feel better physically, you’ll also feel mentally connected and be ready to continue to navigate, with grace and perspective, your perimenopause.

The Details

From June 5 – July 16, in Talking Perimenopause: a Six-Week Salon, we systematically address the main aspects of perimenopause so you find both insight and ideas on how to navigate one of the most challenging physiological transformations we experience.

We start with a pre-course masterclass, where you’ll receive the roadmap to your (fluctuating) hormones, symptoms, and the materials for the upcoming six weeks. (If you join us after that session no worries: You can grab the materials and watch the recorded class at your convenience.)

Then, we meet weekly for six weeks over Zoom for an hour. We’ll record all sessions and release them later that day, but would love to have you there in person!

Each salon session—an hour-long conversation supplemented with light materials—has a specific focus:

  • Week 1: Balancing Blood Sugar—and Decreasing Anxiety
  • Week 2: Navigating Weighty Matters
  • Week 3: Fiber: Staying Regular in All Respects
  • Week 4: Exercise During Perimenopause
  • Week 5: Stress Management: the Power of Rest + Digest
  • Week 6: The Mental + Physical Transition

During the sessions, we’ll spend a portion of the time on information + education, and a portion of the time in conversation, answering questions and talking about your individual situations. Ideally, you are able to attend live, but we will record the sessions so you can watch—or review—at your leisure.

After each session, we will release show notes: a compendium of the topic, tips, and ideas we discussed.

When appropriate, we’ll also give you doable, short assignments to enhance your learning and ease your symptoms.

You’ll have access to a private Facebook page for the duration of the program so we can support each other. Participants will have their group requests approved a few days before the program’s official start date and will be removed shortly after the program ends.

QUESTIONS + ANSWERS

Talking Perimenopause is designed by Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist Ellie Kempton, founder of Simply Nourished, and Dimity McDowell, co-founder of Another Mother Runner.

Over the past six years, the duo have helped hundreds of women stabilize their energy, improve their digestion, and optimize their weight through Simply Nourished Like a Mother, Metabolic Reset, and Metabolic Renewal programs. The two saw a lack in perimenpause programming, and wanted to create an innovative course that addressed the major aspects of the menopause transition in an accessible, community-based setting.

We kind of love/hate this definition from the Journal of Women’s Health: “Perimenopause is an ill-defined time period that surrounds the final years of a woman’s reproductive life.” (Read: it can be confusing, even to the experts!)

That said, we do know that perimenopause begins with the first onset of menstrual irregularity and ends one year after the final period. For the average woman, the transition to menopause begins in her mid-forties, and menopause occurs at age 51. This, however, can vary widely.

No!

If you’re pre-perimenopausal, consider this a running start to make your next physiological chapter feel more grounded and informed. If you’re in menopause or beyond, the practices you learn complement a healthy, nourished life.

A six-week program dedicated to helping you navigate the transition into perimenopause with an understanding of what is happening to your hormones and giving you resources and support to manage symptoms and changes in a healthy way.

The line up:

  •  A pre-course masterclass, during which you’ll receive the roadmap to your (fluctuating) hormones, symptoms, and the materials for the upcoming six weeks.
  • A weekly salon session with a specific focus on major aspects of perimenopause:
    • Week 1: Balancing Blood Sugar—and Decreasing Anxiety
    • Week 2: Navigating Night Sweats + Hot Flashes
    • Week 3: Fiber: Staying Regular in All Respects
    • Week 4: Exercise During Perimenopause (featuring an expert guest)
    • Week 5: Stress Management: the Power of Rest + Digest
    • Week 6: Hormone Therapy: How + Why (featuring an expert guest)
  • After each session, we will release show notes: a compendium of the topic, tips, and ideas we discussed.
  • When appropriate, we’ll also give you doable, short assignments to enhance your learning and ease your symptoms.

Talking Perimenopause is less of a workbook-driven prescription for nutrition and more of a transformational conversation paired with weekly habit formation targeting hormonal transition for perimenopausal women. This 6-week salon complements the more comprehensive, all ages and stages, nutrition programs Simply Nourished Like a Mother, Metabolic Renewal and Metabolic Reset beautifully, but is not as structured in formatting.

Nope: Everyone needing perimenopausal insight and help is welcome!

Yep. You can continue doing exactly what you’re doing.

We strongly encourage you to make sure you have the bandwidth (schedule-wise, mentality-wise, life-wise) to focus on Talking Perimenopause. In order to get the most out of it, you will best served if you can attend the meetings live and follow the detailed protocol.

That said, because Talking Perimenopause is thoughtfully structured and you have support in myriad ways, you’ll be able to follow parts of the program on your own occasionally, if necessary.

We will be unable to issue refunds or do-overs, so please check your calendar and motivation fully before you register.

Salon sessions, held over Zoom, are on Wednesdays at 11 am EDT/8 am PDT: June 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, and July 6 and 13. The pre-course masterclass is on Tuesday, May 31 at 11 am EDT/8 am PDT. We’ll record all sessions and release them later that day, but would love to have you there in person!
