The Ranch

  • Rancho la Puerta invites you to “open your door” to a healthier, more balanced life. We embrace that mantra at Another Mother Runner and can't wait to share this special extended-weekend with BAMRs from around the world.
  • Rancho La Puerta’s gorgeous 4,000-acre property includes 40 miles of hiking trails, 32 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens, and an organic farm complete with a cooking school. They have 11 gyms, four pools, a running track, as well as tennis, Pickleball, basketball, and volleyball courts. There are three full-service holistic spas.

Guests stay in 86 individual casitas situated throughout the resort. As you walk winding brick paths, you’ll happen upon a wine bar, juice bar, or art studio. There are countless indoor and outdoor gathering spaces, as well as WiFi lounges for screen time. As you wander further, you’ll discover a labyrinth, reflexology path, and three dozen hammocks invitingly slung between oak trees.

The Program

  • EVERYTHING IS INCLUDED. Your room; all meals (3 healthy, incredibly tasty squares a day + twice/day snacks: SCORE!); one Ranch Classic Massage; one hands-on cooking class per guest at La Cocina Que Canta; a group Happy Hour off-site at El Cafecito; all hikes, presentations, runs, classes (50+ daily); and round-trip shuttle from the San Diego Airport. Airfare is not provided, and neither are additional spa services (e.g. facial, herbal wraps, reflexology, etc.).
  • RLP's lacto-ovo cuisine provides protein, vitamins, minerals, and probiotics. It is low in fat, sodium, and refined flour and sugar — while high in energy, fiber, and complex carbohydrates. Portions can be abundant thanks to their recipes’ low calorie counts as well as your activity-filled days. Questions visit their Dietary FAQ’s.
  • Evenings, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy a top entertainer’s performance, dance to a live band, participate in a night of bingo with an edge, hear an expert’s thought-provoking lecture, enjoy a cooking class, or a take in a nightly movie. Their programs are dedicated to enriching your mind/body/spirit experience.

The Classes

  • AMR + RLP work behind the scenes to put together a customized wellness Retreat that includes a running program, your choice of 50 (!!) daily classes for all fitness levels including yoga, hikes, Pilates, dance, art, H2O boot camp, and more! We're planning several Retreaters-only classes to bond while we sweat. We're even staging a "triathlon" for Retreaters, with running, swimming, and indoor cycling--Dimity is spearheading so it's bound to be creative + fun!
  • Like with all Retreat offerings, these exciting additions are optional--if these activities get in the way of your hammocking, we totally get it!!
  • Check out this sample schedule
  • (And honestly guys, if you want to hit a few or zero classes per day, opting to read a book in one of the many hammocks on the property, DO IT! This extended-weekend is for you to refresh, rejuvenate, and relax with friends old and new.) We could go on and on, but here’s the Twitter-length version: Our goal is for you to leave the AMR Retreat feeling refreshed, inspired, informed, connected, supported, and fired up to continue on the wellness path.

FAQ

When is the Retreat?

Retreat is Saturday, February 8 - Wednesday, February 12, 2020.

Where is it?

Rancho la Puerta is located in Tecate, Baja California, Mexico, about 1 hour south of San Diego. A valid passport is mandatory for travel to Mexico from the U.S.

Retreat registration includes scheduled ground transportation for your Saturday arrival and Wednesday departure between San Diego International Airport and the Ranch.

What is the weather like?

The climate is variable: In the winter, it's typically warm and dry, with some showers and chilly nights. Typically mid-60s (Farenheit)  by day and drop down to 40 at night. Rancho La Puerta is located just about 25 miles “as the crow flies” from the Pacific Ocean (near San Diego, California) at an elevation of 1,700 feet. You might want to bring light gloves and a beanie for a morning hike or run.

And we believe in karma: We got rained on a fair bit at the 2019 RLP-AMR Retreat and it was chillier than we had hoped for, so we feel we are due for great weather in 2020!!

What are the room rates?

You pay one price for this all-inclusive package. When we say everything is included, we mean EVERYTHING. Room, food, classes, a cooking class, airport shuttle, one Ranch massage, and more!

Junior Villa Single: $3,335

Junior Villa Double: $2,930

2Bed/2Bath: $2,685

Villa Studio Triple: $2,525

What level runner do I have to be to attend?

Walkers to ultrarunners--and everyone in between--are all welcome. In order to get the most out of the Retreat, it will be helpful if you can cover 3 miles, regardless of pace.

What does the schedule look like?

Guess what? IT IS COMPLETELY UP TO YOU. Every day there are 50 (fifty!!) classes to choose from: dance, indoor cycling, strength training, Pilates, barre, yoga, aqua exercise, nutrition, mindfulness, running, cooking, hiking, Pickleball (!)...we could go on and on.

Here is a sample schedule to give you a feel for what is on tap. We will be organizing some classes + fitness endeavors just for AMR Retreaters, but at the end of the day, we want this to be a rejuvenating, relaxing experience for you. And we'll be joining you in classes (and hammocking!).

I'm a new runner. Will I fit in?

Absolutely: You'll leave with a bunch of BRFs from around the country (and possibly the globe) who will virtually cheer you on through your upcoming miles and races! In 2019, we had several walkers at the Retreat, so pace is up to you.

Do I have to be a mother to be part of the Retreat?

Not at all (and thanks for asking!): All women runners are welcome. Nothing mother-specific about the Retreat (except for the name of our brand!). At each of our Retreats, we've had attendees who aren't moms--and moms of older "children" who attend with a grown daughter. We welcome all!

What's the "Refresh" part of the Retreat?

You mean other than being away from laundry-duties, having cooked food magically appear, and a bed all to yourself? All activities at the Retreat are optional--no judgment if you want to sleep until 9:00, stroll the lushly landscaped grounds, read a novel poolside, or knit on the terrace of your casita. Trust us, it's tough to NOT relax at Rancho la Puerta.

Should I attend solo?

Um, do we sweat when we run? Yes, yes, yes, attend solo! We promise, you'll have a coterie of running buddies within the first mile—or actually, the first hours. At previous Retreats, the majority of gals attended solo--but they weren't alone.
That said, you'll also have the opportunity to enjoy some much-needed quiet in your villa, strolling the beautifully landscaped grounds, or in the infared sauna at one of the spas. If you attend solo but want to split the cost of villa, the Retreat's private Facebook page can help you find a roomie. Loads of previous Retreat attendees have gone this route--and come away with a new friend or two (there are triple villas as well as doubles).

Is there a limit on how many gals can attend?

Yes, we want to ensure everyone has a memorable, meaningful experience, so we are limiting the RLP Retreat to 30 women.

What's included in the packages?

EVERYTHING. Your room; all meals (3 healthy squares a day + twice/day snacks: SCORE!); all hikes, presentations, runs, classes (50+ daily); one Ranch Classic Massage, and round-trip shuttle from the San Diego Airport. Airfare is not provided, and neither are additional spa services (e.g. facial, herbal wraps, reflexology, etc.).

Do I need a rental car?

No. Included in the registration fee is round trip transportation to/from Rancho la Puerta from San Diego International Airport.

What time should I arrive in San Diego, and then depart on Wednesday?

ASAP! You can arrive as early as you like on Saturday to get a jump on all the activities (or to claim your poolside lounge chair or, say it with us, hammock!). Airport shuttles run on Saturday at 8:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 12:15 p.m., and 2:45 p.m. We will have a welcome session late Saturday afternoon, but you can take classes or get spa treatments as soon as you get to the Ranch.

The RLP Retreat is much more customizable than our "traditional" Retreats so you decide when to arrive on Saturday and when to depart on Wednesday, but Dimity and Sarah will be optimizing how much time they spend there! (NOTE: Team AMR will be heading  home on Wednesday, February 12, but you can stay longer with pro-rated deal for remainder of week. Totally your choice, but just wanted to mention that option.)

Will there be swag, great running gear, and other surprises along the way?

In the words of Minnesota-bred Dimity: You betcha! We want to keep some details secret, but you’ll definitely be swagged many of our favorites, including Nuun Hydration; GU Energy GelsChews, and StroopwafelsBalega socks; and much more. Given the posh nature of this Retreat, you can expect some swanky surprises, too!

Just so I’m clear: I will be registering for the Retreat directly through Rancho La Puerta.

Yes, ma'am! Our representative at RLP, Donna Sher, is a pro, so she's handling the bookings. Click on the link above, where you will be directed to the RLP site with further instructions.

Do I need to win the lottery to pay for this - it looks so posh!

At the time of registration, a non-refundable payment of $500 is due, with the remainder due within 60 days of registering (giving you time to save up!).

But what if "life" happens and I have to cancel?

We know broken bones, pregnancies (!!), business trips, and the unexpected can happen in any woman’s life. That's why we have cancellation terms with a mom's schedule in mind:
200 days or more prior to the start of the Retreat, you receive: 100% refund to original method of payment, minus $250 administrative fee.

150-199 days or more prior to the start of the Retreat, you receive:
