SBS Summer 2013 Half-Marathon Playlist

Use music to forget how muggy it is.
Use music to forget how muggy it is.

Like stagnant summer air, the playlists on my iPod are sounding tired and wilted right about now. So even though I'm not racing until the fall, it's time for a kick-in-the-pants new playlist. With 37 songs, this one will carry you through a 2:30 or faster half-marathon; if your race will take you longer, this is a strong starting point. Just like I'm trying to wear more sleeveless tops, I tried to really branch out with my music selection, using new or new-for-me songs. Hope you find this music cool. (Find it on Spotify here.)

Wake Me Up: Avicii (figured this was especially appropriate for an early morning runs or races!)
Good Morning: Mandisa
New Day: Alicia Keys
Hurricane: MS MR
Brave: Sara Bareilles (yes, stole this from Dim's iPod)
Next to Me: Emeli Sande
Knock You Down: Keri Hilson
I'll Run: The Cab (nothing like a pedantic song title for a race playlist, right!?)
This Disorder: The Features
Battle Scars: Lupe Fiasco
Repetition Kills You: The Black Ghosts (I hope it doesn't!)
All the Right Moves: OneRepublic
Every Chance We Get We Run: David Guetta
Feel Good Inc: Gorillaz (not new, but great reminder to feel good)
Sweetie: Carly Rae Jepsen (cuz I can't listen to Call Me Maybe every step of every race)
Ready or Not: Bridgit Mendler

Good tunes can help add a smile to your miles.

Closer: Tegan and Sara
Catch My Breath: Kelly Clarkson
Wild: Jessie J
Ride Wit Me: Nelly
Let's Go: Calvin Harris

Ways to Go: Grouplove
Blurred Lines: Robin Thicke (video = horribly offense. Agreed.)
Get Lucky: Daft Punk
Come & Get It: Selena Gomez
Fall Down: (no, stay upright!)
Play Hard. feat. Ne-Yo & Akon: David Guetta
Hang with Me: Robyn (shout this refrain to someone who needs a boost from a buddy)
Higher: Taio Cruz
Replay: Zendaya
Troublemaker: Olly Mars, Flo Rida
I Love It feat. Charli XCX: Icona Pop
Run feat. RedFoo of LMFAO: Flo Rida
Girl on Fire: Alicia Keys (had to do it!)
Hey Porsche: Nelly
Live It Up: Jennifer Lopez
Sweat (Snoop Dogg vs. David Guetta): Snoop Dogg

Now you tell us: What songs are making you move these days? We'd love to get a variety of playlists from you ladies that we can post on our website. Country tunes for a 10K; more hip-hop for a half; mellow 70's tunes for a marathon. Check out the ones we already have on our site, and lay a new list on us. Please send your playlist to us at runmother [at] gmail [dot] com. To make our life (and the life of our diligent intern) easier, please follow our format of: song title: artist name. (e.g. Girl on Fire: Alicia Keys) Tell us name of playlist, if it has one, like "First Timer 10K" or "Rockabilly Hilly Race." Thanks, and groove on!

  1. Every bride wants a fairytale wedding. Therefore, this article is to try and minimize problems that may occur during a wedding reception m998grb m998grb Listed below are the more common mistakes made by brides and grooms during your wedding reception. We will tell you what to do!Don’t leave early. Your guests came from near and far to see you on your wedding day. Not staying the whole time of the reception would be a slap in the face. This will be the only time most of your family and friends will be able to see you as you will be very busy with last minute preparations the days leading up to the wedding.

  2. I’m late to this party but I just LOVE when you post playlists because I get lots of ideas for new stuff to rotate in to my playlists! My current favorites on repeat are Brave by Sara Barielles (yes, got this one from Dimity!) Pompeii by Bastille and Roll Away Your Stone by Mumford and Sons. Can’t wait to check out some of the songs you listed here!

  3. My BRF introduced me to “On Top of the World” by Imagine Dragons. My daughter and I play it on repeat when one of us has hard day and we need to cheer ourselves up.

  4. Nothing particularly new here, just a few that have been putting a spring in my step lately:
“The Sound of Sunshine” by Michael Franti
“Higher Ground” Red Hot Chili Peppers
“Feats Don’t Fail Me Now” 🙂 Little Feat
    “Intergalactic” Beastie Boys
“Gives You Hell” All American Rejects

  5. Thank you, Thank you!!! I’m a run-with-music girl….but lately my music has felt so…..tired….that I don’t even want to think about listening to it again! Time for something new–and I love that you put it on Spotify!!!

  6. “Give it 2 U” by Robin Thicke and “Diane Young” by Vampire Weekend both put a little extra kick in my step

  7. Geez, I’m feeling like such a dork seeing everyone else’s playlists! Mine’s got a lot of Mumford & Sons, Coldplay, (God help me) John Mellencamp, and Oasis.

I’m just so cheap, and I can’t stand to buy “trendy” music that I like right now but won’t like longterm, so I just find the upbeat songs within my own library that have lyrics that move me emotionally and a beat that moves me physically.

  8. Soul Singin’ The Black Crowes
    Howlin’ for You Black Keys
Have Love Will Travel Black Keys
Boom Boom Pow Black Eyed Peas
I Cut Like a Buffalo Dead Weather
    Everlasting Light Black Keys
    SexyBack JT
    Lose Yourself Eminem
    I’m Shakin Jack White
    Heartbroken, In Disrepair Dan Auerbach
    URA Fever The Kills
    Tape Song The Kills

  9. Honky Tonk Woman and Start Me Up- Rolling Stones
    Sweet Child of Mine- GNR
    Low- Flo Rida
I Gotta Feelin- Black Eyed Peas
    Think- Aretha

  10. Here’s a sample of what’s on my playlist right now:

Fall Out Boy – My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark
    Krewella – Alive
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis – Can’t Hold Us
Pitbull ft TJR – Don’t Stop the Party
Jason Derulo – The Other Side
    Zedd – Clarity
    Maroon 5 – Love Somebody
    Nikki Williams – Glowing
    Bruno Mars – Treasure

  11. Thank you so much for posting this! I was JUST saying the other day how I need to update my list… as in start over! I’ve had the same songs for years! Looking forward to getting some of these!

  12. Thank you so much for this awesome playlist!

I’m LOVING Hands In The Air by Step Up Revolution. I can easily listen to this song and Icona Pop’s “I Love It” 3, 4-5 times in a row.

  13. Great play list! I love that “Wake Me Up” by Aviici was the first on the list. I’ve been loving that song, and every time I hear it I write it down and then forget to buy it on iTUnes! Well I just did!
