In less than 24 hours, Dimity and I will be getting our sparkle on at the Disney Princess Half-Marathon. Thanks to the creative guidance of mother runner Kelly Lewis, we will each be dressed as Tinker Bell, complete with lime green Sparkle Athletic skirt and run-worthy fairy wings. (Trust us: We ran 13.1 miles in these beauties last September at Disneyland Half.) Rounding out the Tinker Bell posse will be Krista and Amy, both of whom won entires to the Princess half via a contest we hosted, and Kristin, a Portland mother runner who is helping us at our expo booth this weekend. (Booth 415, btw, if you're in Orlando this weekend! And we're talking at 3 p.m. today on the main stage at the expo. We'd love to see your smiling face looking back at us as we provide tips on optimizing race day performance and enjoyment.)
Alas, our tallest Tinker Bell--Dimity--will be flitting about in a photographer/cheerleader capacity thanks to her fractured toe. But amidst the throngs of Snow Whites, Cinderellas, and Jasmines, look for the other four of us Tinker Bells, in all our Sparkle Athletic glory!
Two other gals who will be sparkling and flitting their way through races, the winners of our special Valentine's Day giveaway (and what's made their days sparkle a bit brighter lately) are:
Christie [red winner]: "Daffodils blooming. Yay, spring is nearly here in Raleigh, NC!"
Lisa Payne Kirker [pink winner]: "Sparkle? Watching our hens wander around the snow-covered back yard looking for patches of grass to peck at. They are so 'in the moment,' both determined and care-free at the same time."
On top of my new running shoes at Princess will be a lime green pompoms made by Krista; inside will be a pair of my must-have's for running: Sof Sole Fit inserts for high arches (they also come in low and neutral options). We have three other winners today: Each of them will get their own pair of Sof Sole Fit inserts, plus a bright pink New Balance Heart Rate Monitor. Sweet! Here are the winners, plus what they ♥ most about running.
Lynn: "I love the fact that it’s completely my time when I run. I can pray, enjoy the beauty that surrounds me or listen to music. Running is my oasis." [LOVE that line: "Running is my oasis."]
Melissa: "Being alone… with my own breath, my own thoughts, my own heartbeat…."
Lesley D.: "Running has allowed me to do something I never even considered when I first got serious about it. My BRFs and I started a 5k (the F.A.B. 5k) race in honor of other mothers in our community fighting breast cancer. If someone would have told me I would be a race director of a 5k race that draws 600+ runners, 100+ volunteers, has raised over $60,000 for The BCRF, and inspired so many 4 years ago, I never would have believed it. It just goes to show you that running can do so many things for others, as well as yourself."
Lisa: "Running gives me freedom: Freedom from a stresses, freedom from antidepressants, freedom from failure, freedom from walls, freedom to set my own pace, freedom to be my own woman, freedom to fly."
Jolene: "I love running because it’s given more than I could have imagined. I’ve challenged myself in ways I couldn’t have imagined. I’ve lost weight and gained friends, how could I ask for more?"
Next steps: Lisa Payne Kirker and Christie, take a look at the Sparkle Athletic sizing chart to figure out what size skirt you'll wear. Then email us at runmother [at] gmail [dot] com your full name, mailing address, and size. Lynn, Melissa, Lesley D., Lisa, and Jolene: Also email us at runmother [at] gmail [dot] com, telling us: first and last name, mailing address, running shoe size, and arch type (low, neutral, or high). To all the rest of you mother runners: We wish you a magical, sparkly weekend! Look for a Disney Princes Half-Marathon race report on Monday.
