Sarah and Ellison Weist, both fifty-somethings, get real, discussing myriad aspects of menopause (both positive and negative) and perimenopause with Dr. Susan Reed, a noted expert in midlife women’s health. As she’s also a mother and a long-time runner/triathlete, Dr. Reed speaks with a deep empathy of mother runners and how menopausal symptoms can throw us off our game (or, rather, workout routine!). Recognizing inability to sleep is a major concern, she offers numerous suggestions for getting more and better quality shut-eye. She talks extensively about various hormonal therapy options to treat symptoms of The Change, including several prescriptions normally used to prevent baby-making, as well as other types of Rx’s. Dr. Reed teases apart what side effects are related to aging versus menopause. Adding some brevity: a frank discussion for (yet another!) use for coconut oil, and find out what type of contest Sarah might enter (but hopefully not win!). Most important take-away from the good doc: Don’t tough out menopause. Amen, sister!

I”m wondering what Dr Reed would suggest for someone like me who wakes up very early to get my morning workout in (either running, spinning or weighs) , 430am-445 and needs to take medicine and then needs to wait 30-60 minutes before eating.
The doctor briefly referenced gabapentin for hot flashes and estrogen creme (I use Estrace), both of which made huge differences in my quality of life.
This could not be more perfectly timed for me. How often do you wash your sheets?! :-) I am not a candidate for hormone therapy, but I read that Black Cohosh is a natural remedy but it affects estrogen levels and I am too afraid to try it. Any thoughts?
Kristin – I tried Black Cohosh with no results whatsoever. I never did find a way to combat those pesky night sweats. (Did wind up doing a LOT of 4 AM runs because I got tired of the on again/off again sweat attacks.) Like Beth I’m now using Estrace for my “atrophy” and I’m wondering if the gabapentin she’s had success with might be an option? Don’t get me wrong – I prefer going the natural route where possible but black cohosh was a non-starter for me. Good luck! and boy, do I feel ya.
Use homeopathy for the hot flashes. You guys have a school of naturopathy up there, no? Call them. Find an ND who does homeopathy and the hot flash/night sweat will be a thing of the past!
As for the joint aches and pains…gluten. I dare you to give up gluten for 3 weeks and not feel better. Mine was notably improved in 48 hours! Just see what happens. If you don’t want to live without gluten at least you can weigh the pros and cons legit.
