While we love a good scroll through a review section both for entertainment and should-I-buy details, we also know the absolute best recommendations for clothing, TV shows, desserts, books, and the like usually come from friends.
Welcome to Our Favorite Things.
In our minds, summertime shoe options are simple and number just three: running shoes, sandals (practical go-to-the-store kinds, not wear-to-a-wedding kinds), and bare feet.
Picking our favorite sandals, it turns out, is also simple; our AMR team of sixteen settled on just three brands. And for good reason: All support your feet as you splash around lakes, push on the brake on a road trip, and do laps around the grocery store.

These traditional German sandals with contoured, supportive footbeds are on the feet of most of Team AMR in the summertime. Coach Jen, a Birkenstock devotee, likes the Arizona style in pink, of course, while TLAM Club Manager Cathy and Facebook Support Michelle prefer the waterproof (and less expensive) EVA versions . (“I just rinse off mine after gardening, and they look brand new!” says Cathy.) Retreat Manager Brooke sums up the ‘stocks appeal best. “Birkenstocks give me the comfort and arch support I need to keep my plantar fasciitis at bay, while still looking stylish with both shorts and dresses during the warmer months,” she says, “The initial cost was more than I would normally spend on sandals, but they’ve been a lifesaver as I’ve finally made it to the other side of my plantar fasciitis.”
Coming in a close second is the sandal whose thicker sole makes you feel like you’re walking on clouds. Coach Mandy raves about the arch support (and loves that she can dress her black pair of flip flops up or down), while Coach Jen resisted buying a pair for so long because,”they’re not super cute, but they’re pure comfort,” she says, “There is nothing than feels better after a long run!” Podcast Co-Host Ellison agrees. “They work for recovery, but are also nice enough to wear out on errands or to a casual lunch,” she says, “I’ve had my pair for going on three summers.”
Coming in with one small but powerful vote are Oiselle’s Sport Sandals, which Many Happy Miles Physical Therapist Christy Diller adores. “I love the style but also the ability to get them wet and not cause damage,” she said, Plus, they’re not too expensive and you get a ton of life out of them. And the cushy foot bed is a bonus!”
