Get ready to Hike—and Train and Laugh and Connect—Like a Mother!

This 20-week program is built to prepare you for the Delaware Valley Mammoth March (20 miles, 1,700 feet of climbing) so all you have to worry about on The Day is taking in the scenery and taking in your calories.

We will virtually train together, then gather on June 15th in person for the hike, which is in NE Maryland (close to Newark, Delaware) on the leafy trails of the Fair Hills Natural Resources Management Area.

Over the course of twenty weeks of training, we’ll focus on the endurance, strength, hydration and fueling necessary to complete 20 miles in 8 hours while enjoying (almost) every step of the way.

Taking a day to head deep into Ma Nature–and away from the crowds—is always a day well spent.

And doing that with like-minded teammates? Pretty much perfect.

The Details

Hike Like a Mother: Delaware Valley 20 Miles is an immersive program that brings out the best in you as an athlete—and incorporates a supportive, in-person team spirit.

For twenty weeks, you’ll train virtually with a group of like-minded athletes for the Mammoth March, a 20-mile hike. Then, in mid-June you’ll gather near Newark, Delaware/NE Maryland to have a memorable day of 20 miles of adventure with your teammates and Coach Dimity.

Included in the program:

  • a comprehensive hiking program to build a strong, capable foundation to go the distance with a smile;
  • a stocked swag bag, including an exclusive Hike Like a Mother long sleeve;
  • regular team meetings to check in with Coach Dimity + your teammates;
  • a biweekly newsletter to enhance your training; and
  • and optional 20% off your registration fee for the Mammoth March*
    *If you register with a group; we can help facilitate this.

Please note: You do not have to run for training during this program; all the cardio workouts can be done walking or hiking.

BIGGEST WEEK OF TRAINING: 3 x 60 min. workouts; 1 x 50 min. workout; 1 x :20 min. workout; 3 short strength sessions; 3:30 hike; two rest days.

LONGEST HIKE DISTANCES: One 4-5 hour hike (that ideally includes 60% of your total epic hike elevation + distance); one 5-6 hour hike (that ideally includes 70% of your total epic hike elevation + distance).

WORKOUT OVERVIEW:  The workouts are a blend of brisk walks/easy runs; climbing workouts (done on stairs, at a stadium, or on a Stepmill at the gym); hill repeats (done outside or on a treadmill); easy cross-training sessions; strength circuits; and long, hilly hikes on the weekends. You do not have to run any of the workouts; you can walk or hike all of them. Most weeks have two rest days, and you can move the workouts around to fit your schedule.

FITNESS EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS: The workouts utilize a stair machine or stadium/set of stairs; a treadmill; and a stationary bike. There are only two workouts with a stationary bike, so if you don’t have a bike, you can easily substitute something else, but the climbing workouts are mandatory.

You definitely need to have access to either a long set of stairs, a stadium, or a Stepmill (the climbing machine where you pick up your feet with each step). A Stairmaster (the machine where your feet stay on the pedals the whole time) can suffice, but we recommend one of the other three options.
