Be prepared to be inspired by the lovely guest Sarah and Dimity talk with on this episode: Sandi Borgman, a mom of three who has run the World Marathon Majors (New York, Chicago, London, Boston, and Berlin marathons) since being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. She ran her first half-marathon after her diagnosis about a decade ago, and she’s gotten faster over the years. (Except for the London Marathon, which she ran pregnant!) Now if she could only decipher how to register for the Tokyo Marathon, which was added to the Majors’ series a mere month after she completed the “final” 26.2. Next up for Sandi: Boston 2 Big Sur this spring. Watch out, world!

Wow,
talk about an inspiration!
How do run all World Majors after being diagnosed with MS.
The lottery registration for Tokyo Marathon starts Aug. 1, you have to get your name in the lottery by Aug. 31st and then they do the pickings by Oct. Foreign runners have a high chance of getting in. This is a country of runners and they say 1 in every 10 get in. We got in our first year. I’m a mother runner from Japan.
If you need help with the registration let me know, and I can help you. The Tokyo Marathon is amazing but I could be biased. I have lived here for nearly 10 years. It is extremely well organized and efficient. You run through some of the most iconic sights in the city, the only time they close the city streets as well so it’s an amazing opportunity. Our friends from the U.S. who are doing the 7 continents said it was their favorite as far as organization.
Thank you! The website is much clearer (even to me) now that the 2013 race is over. I’ll put it on my calendar and make sure my application is in. Thanks for helping a mother out :)
Wow, very inspiring Sandi! I was diagnosed with MS in 2002. I finished my first half-marathon last October in San Francisco at NWM. I am training for half-marathon in D.C. in April right now. I hope to be able to do a full in the future.
Thanks for the inspiration,
Cyndi K
I so enjoyed this! What an inspiration! Thank you, Sandi, for sharing your journey.
I really enjoyed hearing your story, Sandi. You are an definitely an inspiration, especially to me! I started running shortly after I was diagnosed with MS in 2007. At first, it was an act of defiance against MS, proving to myself that I could fight the disease. Now, running is part of who I am, just like the disease. I hope you continue to feel well and good luck at Tokyo!
I so enjoyed this podcast. I am so proud of and constantly amazed by my awesome and beautiful friend..love you Sandi!
Every time I listen to this podcast I am inspired. I love all your podcasts, but this by far is one of my favorites!
