Sarah and co-host Ellison Weist chew the (healthy) fat with Elyse Kopecky, co-author of the just-released cookbook entitled RUN FAST. EAT SLOW. Nourishing Recipes for Athletes. (Alas, Elyse’s co-author, three-time Olympian Shalane Flanagan, was unable to be on program.) Learn how the seed for the book was first planted at a home-cooked meal at Shalane’s house. Elyse talks about the importance of listening to your body when making food choices, then explains how the underlying premise of all the recipes in the book is “indulgent nourishment.” Hear the definition of “hangry” and how runners can combat this all-consuming sensation. A discussion about the importance of eating healthy fats quickly veers into TMI territory, with Elyse admitting why she didn’t have a natural period until almost her third decade. Finally, delight in the health benefits (health benefits!) of microbrew beers. Cheers!
*The two books Ellison (a.k.a. The Book Bully) recommends in this episode:
Commonwealth by Ann Patchett & To the Bright Edge of the World by Eowyn Ivey (& How to Build a Girl by Caitlin Moran, suggested by SBS)

Anyone else unable to hear the podcast? I hear a few notes of music, then silence. I tried on two computers and my phone, and nothing. This is the third podcast in a row that this has happened with. :(
Awesome pod!!! I was able to listen to it Janet+Sherman!
I just finished making the Fartlek Chili while listening:-) Time to eat!
Janet, I have had the same problem the past 2 episodes.
Ellison, you asked for people to let you know why they listen to audiobooks…I was going to tweet a response but I realized it would take way more than 140 characters (and I’m just not that good with words)…I have a master’s in library science (i’m trying to prove I love books)…listening to audiobooks lets me “read” more than one book at a time and I almost never have any issues remembering which is which. I physically read when my young kids (6 and 2) give me a chance to sit and read, haha…rare. I listen to audiobooks when I’m running, walking my dog, cleaning the house (my personal favorite), cooking, driving, etc. I have a smart phone and check audiobooks out of the library, download them on my overdrive app, and connect a tiny motorola boom bluetooth headset (just the one ear needs to hear the audio, that way I’m still aware of cars, my kids screaming, or water boiling over on the stove)…and then it’s like the most hassle free book-reading experience you could ask for. I HIGHLY recommend adding this to your life…it’ll change the way you experience reading by adding a completely new layer to it. If for some sad reason I find myself mopping the floor without my audiobook, I have major flashbacks to all the great times I spent mopping and listening to books like Euphoria…or State of Wonder…or Stephen King…or even David Baldacci and my personal favorite audiobook author of choice, Nora Roberts…her books are more of a guilty pleasure. Unlike most people, I’m SO excited for the AirPods…they’re going to make it so much easier for me to listen to audiobooks nonstop (and podcasts, of course, haha).
Quick question for Ellison: you also mentioned in the podcast another book that you read some time ago that was almost fantasy/magical that you were surprised how much you liked it. My book club is taking nominations for October and that is our typical theme for Halloween month. Help please?
Thank you so much, Carmella! Good info and good take from a seasoned reader. I am going to dip my toe into Audio.com and see what I think. Will report back.
Hey Jennifer. The book I was referencing was THE SNOW CHILD by Eowyn Ivey, which is in paperback now. The other book I would recommend is a mystery: DON’T I KNOW YOU by Karen Shepard. I’ll be checking back here to see if that wasn’t the book you meant or connect with me on Instagram at @bookbully. Hope this helps!
