In the spirit of September and those once-a-year days when YOU got to be the focus of sharing time, we’re introducing Back to School, AMR-Style. For much of September, we are dropping into the memory banks of your youth to share a few K-12 memories—with a little splash of AMR flavor, naturally.
Name: Brittani LeMay
Current Age: 35
Current Location: Katy, TX
Schools Attended: Council Grove Elementary, Middle and High School; Council Grove, KS
Most vivid memory of PE class: Elementary: playing steal the chicken; middle school: sports; high school: weightlifting and running bleachers.
Best event on the Presidential Physical Fitness Test: Sit and reach was always top.
Sports teams in school? Growing up in a small town I played every sport but my favorite was in 3rd grade playing rec soccer. It was my birthday and played on a team with boys. Everyone scored so they set me up to score and I did!
Favorite school supply to buy: Crayons—back in day they had the huge packs and you had to have to large box with sharpener because you were cool!
What’s one random lesson that you clearly remember being taught, but has absolutely no application to your life now? Having to use that expensive calculator.
My fave clothing item from middle school: In middle school I was all about headbands! Accessories were the thing.
What profession did you think you would be when you were young? Did you follow that path or something totally different? I wanted to be a teacher. I started college on that path but changed to social work after meeting a foster child at the daycare where I worked.
If you taught a class in running to high schoolers, what would the first lesson be called? Have fun, it doesn’t matter your pace!
Name: April Garff
Current Age: 40
Current Location: Salt Lake City
Schools Attended: Westland Elementary, Westvale Elementary, Joel P. Jensen Middle, West Jordan High
Where, if anywhere, did you shine on the Presidential Physical Fitness Test?? One mile run! My friend Laura usually beat me but we were the top 2 consistently
Did you play any sports? If so, give us a highlight: I ran Track and Field and Cross Country.
What is/was your favorite school supply to buy? Why? Binders! I loved being organized.
Hot lunch or cold lunch? Cold lunch—I got more freedom to choose.
What’s one random fact/lesson/quote/formula that you clearly remember being taught, but has absolutely no application to your life now? Lake Baikal (in Russia) is the deepest lake in the world.
What profession did you think you would be when you were young? Did you follow that path or something totally different? A marine mammal biologist. Still love animals, but now I’m an Elementary Music Teacher!
If you had to do high school over again, what one thing would you definitely change? I would join more clubs, do the play, join choir, take less math (I have a math teaching endorsement and it’s useless for me).
