Hi, I’m Katie. I’m many things: a mom, a wife, a professional, an AMR team member, and I’m also a breast cancer survivor. I’ll be sharing my story here on Another Mother Runner as I get back into a regular running routine and train for a half marathon. I hope you’ll come along. Feel free to ask questions or share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Since we last talked, I ran my first 5K since I was diagnosed with breast cancer.  I have to admit, I was a little nervous, even though I had been running pretty consistently over the past 2 months.  I signed up for it in January with Coach MK and my friend Jill, to get something on the calendar to train for.  The morning of the race, we got in the car, drove down to the starting line and froze our little tails off while waiting for the shotgun start.

Coach MK said I really need to work on my selfie skillz.

We started off strong and I felt pretty good about my pace, when all of a sudden, we saw the finish line.  It had only been 10 minutes!  Clearly, someone had veered off course and set the rest of the (really small race) off track, so the 5K was cut down to a 3K.  We celebrated with a kid-free brunch and a pat on the back for running our fastest 5K ever!

This race did remind me how much fun races can be – the nerves before the start, the energy of the other runners, the sense of accomplishment when I cross the finish line, the snacks and beer at the end – all of the things I have learned to love over the past few years of my (very) limited racing career.  I was all set to skip the Boulder Bolder this year, a race I’ve run every year with my husband since we moved to Denver, due to my implant surgery at the beginning of May.  But after the 5K, I realized that I HAVE to run the Bolder Boulder in 2017. it means so much more than just another race. It’s important to prove to myself, my family and especially Dan, that I’m better now – more than better! I’m stronger than before and ready to put breast cancer in the past.
