In the spirit of September and those once-a-year days when YOU got to be the focus of sharing time, we’re introducing Back to School, AMR-Style. For much of September, we are dropping into the memory banks of your youth to share a few K-12 memories—with a little splash of AMR flavor, naturally.
If you’d like to be profiled, please fill out this form by September 7.
Name: Amy Reeves
Current Age: 51
Current Location: Chapel Hill, NC
Schools Attended: Highland Belle Elementary, Lylburn Downing Middle, Lexington High School; all in Lexington, VA
Most vivid memory of High School PE class: Playing Uno on the bleachers while most of the class played volleyball. Being terrified to play dodge ball with the upper classmen because they threw the ball SO hard. Hiding behind pine trees so as not to have to bat during softball. (I realize all the memories involve me avoiding PE.)
Best event on the Presidential Physical Fitness Test: Shuttle run for sure.
Sports teams in school? I played soccer for a short time in middle and early high school but, because my town was so small, the team was co-ed. It was brutal going through through puberty on a co-ed team and not being a great player. I remember one guy saying, “You could run faster if you’d just try,” and then I missed a goal kick. And by “missed” I mean my foot missed the ball. The whole team erupted in laughter and I quit the next day. I never felt great about group sports after that. I know I shouldn’t have quit. But I also realize I didn’t have a lot of support to help get through it.
Favorite school supply to buy: Fine-tip Crayola markers.
Hot or cold lunch?: Mix. I loved hot lunch. I remember I lost one of my teeth in elementary school in a taco! But I also very much loved my Little House on the Prairie lunch box. (Little House was one of the two shows I was allowed to watch; Fame was the other.)
Book from K-12 that had the biggest impact on me: Bridge to Terabithia. So so sad. And that bad things could happen to children. Accidents. And how to handle grief.
What I thought I would be when I grew up: A fashion designer. I had this toy called “Fashion Plates” that helped fuel this idea. (Don’t know if anyone remembers these?) I did end up majoring in art history and, while studying abroad junior year in Italy, did an independent study on Armani vs Versace. After a round about time working in a museum and being a stay-at-home mom, I began work in Interior Design. I stayed in the arts.
My fave clothing item(s) from middle school: Tretorn tennis shoes, my Swatch watch (plaid) and jeans that were blue in front and grey in back.
The AMR Community is your teacher. What do you need help with? This is a minor ask but I need help finding cropped capris. Ones that hit right below the knee. (Just literally right below.) It’s a very specific length that I love. I have two pair I bought at a Nike outlet years ago. They’re about to be retired. I am having trouble finding this length. Athleta has some but they are sold out and only in black. Any other sources for this length of running tight?
I can help with the gear search! Oiselle calls them knickers… and I love them. I don’t want a mid calf crop either, hit me right below my knees and I’ll love you forever.
I was going to say the exact same thing as the other Courtney – Oiselle Pocket Jogger Knickers – https://www.oiselle.com/products/pocket-jogger-knickers?currency=USD&variant=40684828819541&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Google%20Shopping&stkn=e8e8505d9842&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw_4S3BhAAEiwA_64YhtHWh3Sd4hGqhtchUaKqgST-CDmSXGJieSS8FDpdptXA7VZBahOHCBoCdtoQAvD_BwE
