In the spirit of September and those once-a-year days when YOU got to be the focus of sharing time, we’re introducing Back to School, AMR-Style. For much of September, we are dropping into the memory banks of your youth to share a few K-12 memories—with a little splash of AMR flavor, naturally.
If you’d like to be profiled, please fill out this form by September 7.

Freshy-fresh Monica with her fave plaid

Name: Monica Bays
Current Age: 44
Current Location: Rochester, NY
Schools Attended: North Elementary Elementary School, Lewiston-Porter Middle School, Lewiston-Porter Senior High School

Most vivid memory of PE class: The parachute in elementary school (isn’t it everyone’s?) and square dancing in high school.

Best event on the Presidential Physical Fitness Test: Flexed arm hang; my twin sister and I were very competitive! Sit ups were a close second.

Monica still winning awards

Sports teams in school? Varsity swimming since 8th grade, and I tried track in middle school.

Hot or cold lunch?: Cold, and I always brought lunch.

Book from K-12 that had the biggest impact on me: Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, someone our age that went through such a difficult experience.

What’s one random lesson that you clearly remember being taught, but has absolutely no application to your life now? I can sing all the states in alphabetical order because I learned the song “Fifty Nifty United States.”

My fave clothing item from middle school: Anything plaid from Abercrombie and Fitch.

If you had to do high school over again, what one thing would you definitely change? I wouldn’t have cared so much about what people thought of me.

Name: Michelle Adler
Current Age: 52
Current Location: Andover, KS
Schools Attended: Claremont elementary (OK); Hesston Middle school (KS); Buhler High school (KS)

What is your most vivid memory of PE class in elementary, middle, or high school? Kickball. I was fast and could kick so I was picked closer to the front. There’s a lot of power in watching the boys back up when you’re up to kick!! It was also where I realized I was faster than most girls.

Did you play any sports? If so, give us a highlight: I started running Junior Olympics when I was 9. We went all over the region running track meets. I even made it to Nationals!

What is/was your favorite school supply to buy? Why? Flair pens and a good paper planner/calendar. Pretty organization is my jam.

What book did you read in school (K-12) that made the biggest impact on you? Why? Where the Red Fern Grows. I realized history was interesting, it’s the first book I remember crying about, and I learned when it’s a good book it doesn’t matter if the character is a boy or girl.

If you taught a class in running to high schoolers, what would the first lesson be called? Stretching and Why it Matters, followed immediately by You and Your Core!

Any other school-related tidbit you want to share? Teachers are amazing. This job is hard and draining! If you’re working this job AND working out, you’re absolutely incredible.
