Why Many Happy Miles?

On our first book tour for Run Like a Mother, we—Dimity + Sarah of Another Mother Runner—struggled with what to write when we signed a book. Just our names felt too impersonal, as did the reader’s name plus our names. Good luck sounded like it left too much up to chance, while keep at it felt too pushy. Aim high or reach your goals? Too much like a motivational poster you’d find in a cubicle.

Standing behind an expo table one day as I—Dimity— cracked another spine of a book to sign, I recalled a conversation with a #motherrunner, who had just finished her first half-marathon on a hilly, challenging course.

I asked her if she would train for another. Yes, she answered, “Running just makes me happy.”

By happy, of course, she didn’t mean an ear-to-ear grin on her face during—and after—her miles. She meant her whole self was more balanced, patient, strong, motivated, confident, and forgiving (both with herself and with others) after she laced up and headed out.

We signed her book many happy miles, and that phrase is likely the second most common one around Another Mother Runner. (Bad*ss mother runner is definitely in the lead.) We still sign our books with it; we use it to sign off on our weekly podcast; and we continually use it to focus our perspective, both professionally and personally.

We started the Many Happy Miles party in 2019 and we had a lot of fun planking, foam rolling, sitting (wall sitting, that is), setting our race and life goals, Marie-Kondo'ing 15 minutes at a time, and of course, adding many happy miles week after week.

In 2020, we have lots of new things in store, including an app where all of the workouts, challenges, on-demand strength videos, and other surprises will be easily accessible for busy #motherrunners. Guest coaches will take over a few months during the year, providing new perspective and guidance to runners of all different abilities.

All of the elements in the Many Happy Miles program lead up to our mantra around the halls of AMR: Helping you feel balanced, patient, strong, motivated, confident, and more forgiving in 2021.

All new and renewing members in 2021 receive a custom Many Happy Miles Weekly Training Journal by Dimity McDowell. Full of inspiration and perspective, tips and tricks, it'll keep you running—and writing—strong all year long.

2021 offers up Version 2.0 of the Many Happy Miles app! We have switched platforms to a much more user-friendly, accessible app; workouts, challenges, strength videos, and community will be just a simple tap away.

12 months of engaging workouts to keep you motivated all year long! Includes running, cross-training, strength circuits, + running-specific prehab (injuries, be gone!). Suitable for all levels of runners from beginners to Boston qualifiers.

In 2020, our members used their discounts on Handful Bras, Swiftwick Socks, Nathan Hydration Products TLAM challenges, and AMR merch to name a few. Whether you've got a marathon or a wardrobe makeover on your mind, you'll save significantly with your membership.

In 2021, we'll continue to bring in a variety of top-notch guest coaches who will help you improve + learn as a runner. We'll have a taste of heart rate training; triathlon; trail running; and a few other helpful training integrations like Pilates.

In 2020, our experts included Olympians Carrie Tollefson and Lorraine Moller; New York Times Food Writer Melissa Clark; as well as experts who taught workshops in Pelvic Floor Health and Foot Health for Runners. We'll continue to educate and entertain in 2021!

New in 2021, an optional book club moderated by none other than Adrienne Martini! Adrienne. The Dry Martini author is a published author and writes many pieces for the AMR blog. She will pick a mixture of books that will keep a great conversation going all year long.

 We mix up the monthly challenges from racking up push-ups to focusing on gratitude to grounding yourself on the earth. Many Happy Miles is so much more than running!

We know how much y'all dig counting up your miles at the end of each year so we thought we would make it a fun group project that you can add to your family's refrigerator!

Every month you'll receive a fresh strength circuit that focuses on building endurance-related strength and preventing running injuries. You'll have the opportunity to do live workouts regularly, and if you can't make it, we share the video afterwared.

Why did you create Many Happy Miles?

We've heard screeching-stop, post-race scenarios so many times—and experienced it ourselves—we wanted to create a fun, accessible program that not only fills in the gaps between races, but also helps you improve as a runner.

And if you're someone who prefers not to race, we also thought of you during our Many Happy Miles development. This program will lend structure—and some instruction—to your running, not to mention an army of teammates who will happily help you out the door when you'd rather not go. Is this a training program for a specific race distance (5k, 10k, half-marathon, marathon)?

No. The workout focus in Many Happy Miles is regular sessions (running, cross-training, strength circuits) that keep you motivated and moving, no matter what is on your life/work/family/house/garden/grocery to-do list.

The longest weekend run is 90 minutes, and all the workouts can be adapted for walking or for a run/walk pattern.

Okay, but can I race using the Many Happy Miles workouts?

Certainly, you can run a 5k or 10k if you’ve been consistently following the Many Happy Miles workouts for two or three months, but specific race-focused workouts are not included in the monthly plans.

If you're running a half-marathon or marathon and/or want to really root down in a training cycle for a specific goal, the Train Like a Mother Club, with its range of training plans created by expert, accessible coaches, is the best place for you to do that.

The good news? In Many Happy Miles, you'll receive occasional discounts to Train Like a Mother Club programs, and the Many Happy Miles workouts will be waiting for you—and your potentially waning motivation—after you cross the finish line.

I plan to run two marathons this year and need to be on race-specific training plans: Why should I join Many Happy Miles?

There is so much more to Many Happy Miles beyond the monthly workouts.

  • Regular expert guest speakers—everybody from running-focused physical therapists to a holistic nutritionist to a pelvic floor physical therapist—will drop in and enhance your running + life.

  • The monthly challenges will enhance your marathon training (there’s no such thing as too many planks, right?).

  • Finally, the monthly workouts will be a perfect place to land when you’re out of marathon training; you won’t lose your running groove, as often happens after a long race.

How much guidance will there be from coaches?

In Many Happy Miles, Dimity + the MHM team are ready to rah-rah-rah for you + help you integrate all the MHM programming into your running + life, but we are not able to tweak the monthly schedules, answer race-specific questions, or otherwise deviate from the MHM focus.

As such, we will NOT individually amend any monthly workouts to accommodate races, vacations, or injuries. (That said, you will have access to an army of smart #motherrunners, and you are welcome to ask the community for advice.)

How does membership work?

Many Happy Miles is an annual membership that you purchase once ($175). You will be notified by email at the beginning of the month before your 12-month Many Happy Miles membership is auto-renewed so you can cancel if you’d like.

We are closing registration for new annual memberships on January 10, 2021.

Can I give Many Happy Miles as a gift?

Absolutely! Head here to purchase.

I subscribed in 2019 or 2020. Will I automatically be renewed?

Yes. That said, you will receive an email at the beginning of the 12th month of your membership that will explain your options for the upcoming year (autorenewal or cancellation).

I have a quarterly or biannual membership with Many Happy Miles. What's happening with those?

We need to phase out both quarterly and biannual memberships, as we're creating a new website (woohoo!) and our new subscription platform doesn't support those. Before the end of February 2021, you will receive an email about converting your membership to an annual one.

If you have questions now, feel free to email us.

Will my annual membership change now that there is no longer rolling admission?

If you joined as an annual member in 2019 or 2020, your annual membership will continue as it was. It will renew on the date you joined the year prior, and you'll receive an email two weeks before that as a head's up.

I need to change my billing or shipping address. How do I do that?

Head to "MHM Account" and then "My Addresses." Click "EDIT" on either billing or shipping—or both—and update your address. When you are done, be sure to click the box in the bottom left corner that reads "Update the Billing Address used for all of my active subscriptions" and then click "Save."

How much is shipping?

Shipping for both domestic and Canadian orders is included in the $185 membership fee.

I live outside of the United States and Canada. Can I join Many Happy Miles?

Unfortunately, after having myriad issues with shipping, customs, and lost packages, we are unable to offer international memberships outside of North America in 2021.

How do I prevent my subscription from auto-renewing?

You will receive an email from us at the beginning of the 12th month of your membership; in it, there are details on how to cancel your membership for the following year.

Please note: do not cancel your membership before your last month begins, or you will lose access to that month's materials. 

Will I still have access to all of the content and materials if I cancel?

Yes. Your previous materials will be on the Many Happy Miles website, under your account. That said, if your credit card fails or expires during your membership and you do not update it, we will cancel your account and you will lose access to the Many Happy Miles materials and community.

Can I join for less than 12 months?

No: Your membership to Many Happy Miles is a full 12 months; the programming is a complementary package that is best experienced on an annual schedule.

What is the refund/cancellation policy?

We are unable to offer any refunds on Many Happy Miles annual membership. Trust us, once you experience a month in MHM, you won’t want to leave!

You will be notified by email two weeks before your 12-month Many Happy Miles membership is renewed; at that point, you will have the opportunity to cancel your membership.

What happens if I get injured?

With plenty of physical-therapy exercises and strength training, we're going to do our best to see that injury doesn't happen.

But if it does, being a member of Many Happy Miles will greatly benefit your recovery.
Each month of workouts will have options for translating the running workouts into non-impact workouts. (So if you can elliptical, bike, or walk, you're good to go!)
The expert guests will focus on a variety of topics, including physical therapy, gratitude, and nutrition , which are keys to getting stronger, both mentally and physically.
Being connected to an empathetic community is incredibly helpful to fill the holes that come with being sidelined.

How do I access the materials?

Upon registering, you will get a username and password; upon entering them to the private Many Happy Miles site, you will have access to the site.

On the site are: the PDFs of the monthly workouts + challenges; exclusive podcasts + videos; and a page full of discounts. We also have a Many Happy Miles platform on Final Surge, where you can also access all every aspect of the program to successfully implement the MHM program into your life!

When will I receive my Many Happy Miles Weekly Training Journal?

We will ship the journal in mid-January to new members and those whose memberships renew in the beginning of 2021. Previous members whose memberships renew later in the year will receive the journal upon their renewal.

I’ve seen a Many Happy Miles mask on social media. Do I get that?

That (comfy, useful) mask is for people who joined Many Happy Miles previously and are returning for 2021. (If 2020 is your first year, don’t worry: We’ll have a great returning gift next year as well!)
