Sarah and Dimity are joined by Adrienne Martini, mother runner, college professor, and author, who is fresh off running her first half-marathon. Adrienne reveals why she ran laps for many of her training runs, and how she kept herself entertained on long runs. The newly minted half-marathoner shares the internal dialogues she had with herself before runs, when she struggled to escape the orbit of her house. Recapping her race, she talks about why Mile 7 was both a relief—and a hurdle. First up, though: Listen to Sarah marvel at the joy—and blue ribbons—her 8-year-old twins are discovering at the local track.

Excellent podcast! Loved hearing Adrienne tell about her training and racing tales; goodness, she is funny! I am looking forward to more of her postings!
I have loved reading the Martini Friday posts all along, so yesterday when I was at the start of my longest race ever (15k) I was so excited to see this episode in my Downcast list, and I cued it right up. My first two miles were terrible, two of the worst miles I’ve ever run – shin splints and getting all in my head as how nuts it was to even attempt this when my longest distance before was 10k, and what was I THINKING?! Adrienne’s interview was exactly what I needed to hear – I Get to Do this. (Plus, the 15k is slightly ahead of/embedded in a marathon, which is why I even tried, and I had to laugh because I had had the same conversation of “I don’t care about being LAST, I just don’t want to inconvenience anyone” with my friends the night before!) After that terrible awful first two miles, I got better and faster with each subsequent mile, and ended up finishing 10 minutes better than I’d hoped. Still slow, still one of the very last to finish the 15k, but super glad to have finished in 2:05. A new PR! (By default. I can’t wait to beat that time next year.) One of the reasons the Martini posts really spoke to me is because I related to her so well – Dimity and Sarah are awesome but intimidating, having an “adult onset athlete” be part of AMR was great. Especially one as entertaining as Adrienne!
