Let’s start from the ground up: Unless you’re jumping on the barefoot movement, one of the two must-haves for mother runners is running shoes (the other is a sports bra).
While Dimity and Sarah consider themselves shoe-geeks (well, SBS does anyway), on this show, they brought on a true professional, Sonya Estes, owner of Runners Roost in Lakewood, Colorado, to talk pronation, cushioning, stability, and all things footwear-related to help guide you to your perfect pair.

THANK YOU for making it so easy to download the podcasts!!!! You girls are AWESOME!!!!
Tip – use a Fisher space pen or fine point sharpie (you’re looking for waterproof-ness) to write the start date on the inner side of one foot (the thick part of the shoe, wherever it will show up – I overpronate, so I get that gray section of the sole that shows motion control, and I write it just ahead of that on the white). Additionally, I write “new shoes” in my training log/record. Despite using custom orthotics that I refresh annually, I usually start having weird pains and problems between 300-350 miles (has happened twice and when I check the mileage by adding up my entries in the log, that’s where I am!). Because I’ve had injuries (posterior tibial tendinitis has been my nemesis for years now), I’m conservative and change shoes earlier than some folks might. Also, for my last race (half), I started getting my weekly mileage higher, so I’m being even more careful.
Dimity, I know what you mean about new shoes/same model – I started a new pair of the same shoes shortly before a race, and after 3 short runs, it didn’t feel right, so I went back to my old shoes (250 miles on them) for the half and I was fine PR!). Now I have to figure out when to try the new ones again. I’m a bit nervous because there’s only one shoe (Brooks Ariel) that works for me, and so I buy multiple pairs when they’re on sale – so if there’s a problem, I have several pairs that will be! Could be a mfg defect in just one pair though.
Enjoy the podcasts.
