And we’re almost 80% through the 5K of the Holidays…time for the final push. You might need some energy to finish strong, but before we dive into the awesome, healthy calories we’re offering today, a few reminders: all winners announced this Saturday, the 8th. And Canadians are in on this one too…it’s a cold, dark winter up there, and we know you need some tasty tastiness to get you through.
So today we devote to some of our favorite foods and drink, as well as a treat thrown in for the four-leggeds in the crowd. Because they like treats as much as we do.
When the run gets tough, I pull out a GU; the 100 calories snaps my body–and mind–back to to the task at hand. And when the GU is a fresh peppermint flavor, all the better…I’m ready to kiss my husband when I get home. (He’d like my breath; not sure about my salt-crusted face.)
I could write a Christmas carol about how much we love nuun–all I want for Christmas is nuuuuun, baby...–but since I don’t have Mariah Carey’s voice, I’ll spare you. Suffice it to say, Nuun’s unique, slightly sweet electrolyte tabs, which work as well on the run as they do post-run, keep us hydrated and happy.
Our mother runner pals in Minnesota introduced us to Somersaults, nut-free, crunchy snacks whose tastiness belies how high in protein and low in sugar they are. The sunflower-heavy nuggets are great on yogurt–or just by the handful (and handful and handful…until you clean out the stash of the MN mother runners.)
With drool-worthy flavors like chocolate peanut butter and chocolate hazelnut butter (my personal fave), Justin’s Nut Butters slathered on a piece of toast are my preferred way to start–and end–my days. Bonus points for the super clever copy on the packaging (“Nuts can’t read, so I’m not afraid to say that [maple almond butter] is my favorite flavor.”)
Maybe the most troubling thing about Luna, on-the-go nutrition bars packed full of chick-important things like iron, folic acid, calcium, Vitamin D and, um, chocolate, is that there are too many scrumptious flavors to choose from: Nutz Over Chocolate, LemonZest, Peanut Honey Pretzel, S’mores…
Everybody needs a treat, especially the four-leggeds who always run with us–and often are the ones who convince us we need to go. Zuke’s all-natural treats are small enough to stash in a pocket and reward a dog while on the run–or make a small mound of them, post-run, to thank your hound for his non-judgmental, always enthusiastic attitude. (And I’m thinking they might need to make a human version of Hip Action. Just saying.)

I love popcorn with garlic powder sprinkled on it. I eat some almost every day.
I skip the toast and just squirt one of those sachets of nut butter (with chocolate – gotta have the chocolate!) straight into my mouth!!!

For better or worse, my most common snack is an energy bar. Usually it’s a Luna bar (chocolate raspberry), but I’m grooving on the seasonal peppermint Clif bars this month. Chips and hummus are a runner up, but they don’t work well on the way to school pick-up or when riding the bus to work.

I love almonds for a quick, healthy, salty go-to snack. Even after a run I will get into the almonds and often chase them with a banana.
I’m with almond girl above but I throw in some dried cherries. Yum! Oh, and good ol’ Pbj works anytime!
I’m eating it right now. Air popped popcorn with extra virgin olive oil sprayed on with a Misto sprayer, and then finished off with fresh ground pink himalayan sea salt – available at costco, as is the Misto…and the popcorn for that matter.
Handfuls/spoonfuls of whatever’s plentiful. Lately, I’ve been grabbing handfuls of dried cranberries, but normally it’s spoonfuls of peanutbutter!

I like lots of not-so-good-fo-you snacks…but my favorite healthy snack is Knackebrod – a swedish crisp bread made mostly of rye flour. I love it slathered with really good Irish butter or a nice slice of cheese.
So many to choose from! Popcorn is an all-time fave, the *real* kind, made on the stove with oil and sprinkled with fine sea salt. So warm, crunchy, salty, and not too terrible for you! I don’t say chocolate because that’s not a snack – it’s a necessity of life.

Cheese and crackers – specifically Triscuits with a nice, sharp cheddar, but I’m not picky!
Fresh (homemade) yogurt with blackberries, raspberries, granola (my own recipe too) and a dash of vanilla. To DIE for. Who needs ice cream? Ok, I do… but this is a wonderfully sweet treat that you don’t have to feel guilty for!
I could easily say something healthy but hands down my FAVORITE snack is my husbands homemade guacamole with black beans and pineapple! Seriously I’d run MILES for this stuff on chips its that good lol

Jelly Beans! I got some funny looks at a water station on my last marathon when I pulled out my “energy” jelly beans but I love them. My kids call them my “magic beans.”

Chocolate chip pancakes. I make a big batch and freeze them. When I come in from a long run, I pop some in the microwave. It’s a perfect post-run snack.

When I hear snack, I think of peanut butter and a spoon! Nothing tastes better…of course I have to try to keep this in moderation. However this is why I want to try the peanut butter gel in the give-away…it could be just the thing to keep me running long. Then I just need a t-shirt: “Will run for peanut butter”.
If I’m being good my favorite snack is a greek yogurt with granola mixed in. If I’m being indulgant, cheetos. Dear lord those things are addictive.
I eat triscuits and cheese almost every day, usually with an apple or some carrots on the side. My FAVORITE snack, though, is chips and guacamole with a good hoppy beer :-)
I would have to say popcorn. I make my own microwave popcorn. Put a quarter to a half cup of unpopped corn in a brown paper lunch bag, tap closed, and microwave for 2 minutes on high. Then open the bag and take out the popped corn, reclose and microwave for another 90 seconds or so to get the rest popped. Super yummy and avoids all those microwave popcorn bag chemicals!
Snacks for me are almost always fruit. I’m a big apple fan, at least 1 and often 2 a day!
My favorite snack was an apple with 2 tbsps of extra crunchy PB. However, I have developed an allergic reaction to PB. My new favorite snack is Greek yogurt with GoLean.

Spicy popcorn! Make popcorn. Then melt butter in the microwave and stir in a little (or a lot!) of hot sauce–Cholula, Frank’s, Tabasco, whatever is your poison. Drizzle it onto the popcorn, mixing it up to distribute it evenly.
Or you could strategically spread it heavier on “your” side of the bowl ; )

Personally, I can’t stand GU, but wouldn’t turn down the peppermint ones if I win! I tried a few different things on the run and settled on PowerBar Energy Blasts, raspberry flavor. I also enjoy Honey Stingers. Last weekend, I ran out of my energy blasts unexpectedly (I think little fingers got sticky!) and had to settle for Clif Shot Blox strawberry and was really surprised by how much I liked them! Now I have a few things I can rotate through. :) And can’t forget my post-run must have, nice cold glass of chocolate milk!

Bacon! Almonds, raisins or dried cranberries, cashews and sometimes I add some bacon to that too. Banana and almond butter or peanut butter. Whatever gives my body the fuel it needs but doesn’t give me the sugar spike then crash!

3 years ago I would have said beer and chips (still love, but…) now I’ve convinced myself that multi-grain crackers, laughing cow cheese and apples with soda water to drink satisfies the salty/bubbly craving that comes at 4pm.
Air popped popcorn with a healthy dose of garlic salt, Parmesan cheese, and just enough butter to get it to stick.

Yea,,, is it wrong to consider nachos a snack? I mean, snack means “smallish” right? So, a smallish plate of nachos would be my snack of choice. And by smallish, I mean that which would fit on a salad sized plate. Not to be confused with “biggish” nachos which would fill (and sometimes over flow off of) a larger dinner sized plate.
I am addicted to Greek yogurt and so is the whole family! I am glad it is good for you because to me it tastes like a dessert!
Peanut butter! Natural style with NO sugar in it. I’ll eat it any old way..right out of the jar, on a banana, with bacon, on toast, stirred into greek yogurt with honey and granola, in a smoothie…a day without peanut butter is like a day without sunshine!!

I have two favorite snacks! One of them is “Energy Balls” which I make at home from a recipe I found on Pinterest. They are a mix of oatmeal, peanut butter, honey, choc chips, nuts…YUM!!! I also LOVE “Mary’s Gone Crackers”…a gluten-free cracker with the most amazing crunch and flavor.

Favorite snack depends on so many variables. My mood, my period, the proximity of my children; to name a few. Combination of chocolate & peanut butter are always good. A roasted marshmallow. Popcorn. Potato chips & french onion dip. Raw veggies & the most fattening (ie. delicious) dill dip I’ve found at Sam’s Club. Peanut butter on celery. Cheez-its. Combos (cheddar & pretzel). Guacamole. Roasted red pepper hummus & pita chips.
For cravings : Dark chocolate : I keep a stash of individually wrapped squares in my desk & allow myself 2 per day max

What ever is available in the cupboard or fridge: peanuts, Fritos, pretzels, clementines, cheese sticks, graham crackers, carrots, balance bar, ritz crackers with peanut butter. I don’t have a favorite, I just eat what I see so I try to watch my shopping habits but somehow those Fritos always end up in the cart!
My all-time favorite snack is Oreos dunked in milk! But, when I something healthy, I’ll go for any kind of berry in the summer. In the winter, it’s tougher, but the Justin’s Maple Almond on crackers is really good (plus, you can put the single servings in your liquid bag and get through the airport security with a mid-flight snack!)
This is probably the hardest question as I snack a lot, both healthy and unhealthy. However, I would say that our favorite family snack is a plate of apples, cheese, and crackers.
I found these tasty little morsels called Buddy Fruits Pure Fruit bites. They are 100% fruit and although they are probably for kits these things are so good. I ate a pack after my run this morning and immediately felt better. They would be an EXCELLENT afternoon pick me up at work or home playing with the kids!

I love Funky Monkey’s freeze dried apple slices. One bag is a perfect snack size. They taste yummy and hit that crunchy/sweet spot!

Ritz crackers! And not the whole wheat or dash of salt kind, either. I want the unhealthiest, high fructose corn syrup, white flour and sugar kind! It started while I was pregnant with my third and constantly craving salt. Now I crave that salty, crunchy, buttery goodness after a long run.
I know I should be virtuous, but it’s cheese, usually of the stinkiest variety. Lately, I’ve liked brie on cranberry bread, but I also had an indecent moment in the store when I tried it topped with orange-fig spread. I think I can write it off no trouble…!
Love these KIND bars. They either have mixed nuts, dried fruit, yogurt, choc chips, & they come in assorted varities. Also love peanut M&M’s.

Cream cheese on fresh made bread or crackers with jalapenos from the garden. Yes, a summer time only snack…oh, how I love spicy foods. In winter…hot red pepper jelly on top of the cream cheese. yummo!

To me a “snack” is something naughty :) Sure everyday I eat Dannon light n fit vanilla yogurt with a perfectly pulverized granola bar blended in it but that’s my 2nd meal after breakfast. My favorite “snack” is in the afternoon when I’m craving chocolate. I go to the quarter snack machine in our lunch room and spend .50 on almonds and .50 on m&ms in a cup and the next 10 minutes in heaven ;)
